Nah, the fact that the author legitimately thinks bisexual men are a myth just makes him a bit of a disappointment.

he says in the comments that his work was based on data collected by OKCupid (and his linked data set implies exactly the sort of system he set up) and that he's fine with changing the situation (which he did, in the current alpha pawns of either gender have ~15% chance to be bi)

there's a ton of problems with the data set he links, not the least of which that it's OKCupid, which has a rather, uh, specific target demographic, but let's not pillory tynan for being an irredeemable dongsack when he's already admitted he has a lot of work to do on the module and has done some work since this crap came out.

yeah one of the constant problems with writing code for something that operates in a 3d game world is finding a proper focus to make something happen on. it's not appropriate for the player to run a lot of this stuff, and just defining a generic 'trigger target' class raises some uncomfortable questions about overall functionality. how should this trigger target interact with the world around it? what are sane restrictions? how does it behave as a general entity? quantifying this stuff is really weird and hard to define, and even harder to explain to people who are trying to understand your work. something ephemeral, surprisingly enough, isn't easy to understand or define.

so it ends up making MORE SENSE just to have a magical invisible critter that acts as a scapegoat because it's already got well defined interactions with everything (it won't fall through the world or phase into a rock and crash poo poo), and people generally understand just needing a stand in scapegoat.

Being fair to the mod maker, that "sex slave" background turns up oddly often, and characters with it are usually girls under 30 and always totally useless. I think the restriction is coming from a "how do I make these shits useful" standpoint, not a weird fetishist standpoint.

that is because that background was submitted by a backer. the game chooses pawns a little oddly. there's a very high chance of a certain number of backer pawns showing up in any particular game, and the game coin flips on whether or not any new pawn will be male or female. if it determines it's time for a backer pawn to show up, and the coin flip comes up female, there's a grand total of like 8 or 9 female backer pawns to choose from, vs multiple dozens of male pawns (because, unsurprisingly, most of the whale backers of rimworld are weird shut in dudes). one of those female pawns is that sex slave pawn.

the other thing you'll see showing up weirdly often if you look are computer programmer or other nerd backgrounds on male pawns that for whatever reason have almost no penalties or restrictions. because, unsurprisingly, those weird shut in dudes that made those backgrounds wanted to be demigods in their video games.

there's plenty of precedent for moderating backer contributions; inXile did it on both WL2 and Tides and there's no egregiously weird backer poo poo in either of those games to my knowledge

however, inXile is a well established company run by an industry veteran, and many crowdfunding projects are startups run by what's charitably described as scrappy, passionate up-and-comers who wouldn't have had a chance in hell of pursuing their dreams 20 years ago. the comparison is still slightly apples to oranges because reviewing the body of work you're soliciting from people is still a lot of work and startups are frequently overwhelmed by details like that.

this isn't to excuse any of this, merely to explain it.

correct, he's using cheat engine to modify the properties of weapons to have different bullets, different bodies, etc. there's no sanity checks on any of this in game so if you tell a missile launcher that it now shoots exploding motherships that detonate into black holes, it will just work. what's truly impressive is that the engine can handle all of this without dropping its proverbial spaghetti. it's important to remember that EDF games are made on a shoestring budget by a handful of people who are just following their passions. they don't have endlessly deep pockets the way an EA or a Capcom project would have.

If I were to implement a romance subplot in Eternity – I wouldn’t. I’d examine interpersonal relationships from another angle and I wouldn’t confine it to love and romance. Maybe I’d explore it after a “loving” relationship crashed and burned, and one or both was killed in the aftermath enough for them to see if it had really been worth it spending the last few years of their physical existence chained to each other in a dance of human misery and/or a plateau of soul-killing compromise. Or maybe I’d explore a veteran’s love affair with his craft of murder and allowing souls to be freed to travel beyond their bleeding shell, or a Cipher’s obsession with plucking the emotions of deep-rooted souls to try and see what makes people attracted to each other beyond their baser instincts and discovers love… specifically, his love of manipulating others. You could build an entire dungeon and quest where he devotes himself to replicating facsimiles of love, reducer a Higher Love to a baser thing and using NPCs he encounters as puppets for his experimentations, turning something supposedly beautiful into something filthy, mechanical, but surrounded by blank-eyed soul-twisted drones echoing all the hollow Disney-like platitudes and fairy tale existence where everyone lives happily ever after.

a lot of it is in line and can fill some gaps in equipment that you might be feeling, but the larger reason why the loot's not that important is because it's so close to the end of the game. there's two dungeons with dudes and one dungeon with puzzles after the drizzt encounter and then you're off to Throne of Bhaal, which is explicitly designed and itemized for maximum epic level characters. virtually everything you can get in Shadows of Amn is obsolete in the first hour or two of gameplay.

The dichotomy between what the designers intended and the actual games themselves has always been a bit amusing.

I've never bothered with the books, but from what I've heard of them a lot of the plots would be hopelessly derailed by basically any source of healing whatsoever; let alone what an adventurer with level appropriate gear could do.

the primary issue with the books is that the main character is some lawful good single class no kit human fighter, which literally nobody in the history of ever has done in those games and would get reduced to ashes and vapor in the first couple of hours of gameplay without some very serious metagaming and manipulation. it's like the writer who got the job was explicitly told "make the MC as boring as humanly loving possible because there's no precedent on what he should or should not be from the games", when the entire arc of SoA and the opening act of ToB is all about how the Bhallspawn blood makes people crave murder like fuckin' Dexter and poo poo. despite that, there's almost no moral conflicts in what i read, just emotional conflicts with understandable but drab stuff such as wanting to look after Imoen and getting distressed when she's in danger or unhappy.

i didn't read long enough to see if there were any painfully abortive romance arcs in the SoA book but it would be entirely in keeping for him to go after Jaheira in the most traditional, vanilla way possible and have her succumb just because nothing better is on offer.

on the note of 'weirdest module you ever played', though, In The Footsteps Of Dante definitely takes the cake. some dude made all the circles of hell based off close literal readings of the divine comedy, and then put you in the role of going down to the bottom to recover 'something very important' to your companions. you have a choice between Dak'kon, Annah, and Fall-from-Grace. yes, THAT Dak'kon, Annah, and Fall-from-Grace.

i ended up reclaiming the bottled essence of The Nameless One by clicking a 9-sentence long dialog choice that apparently out-lawyered literal Satan or something. i know i was talking to literal Satan at any rate.

The author of the first two Baldur's Gate books actively hated being told to write an adaptation and banged them out in between commercial breaks on the TV- Throne of Bhaal's was written by Drew Karpyshyn. Also, by Forgotten Realms canon policy, they overwrite the games. So everyone but the protagonist is dead, until he died in the 5E module Murder in Baldur's Gate and resurrected Bhaal somehow. The Planescape novel was based off an earlier version of the script, where Fjull Fork-Tongue was secretly behind it all- the Nameless One pledged his soul to the Blood War to spare his village, then sought out Ravel to prolong his fate as long as possible.
fortunately, forgotten realms canon has meant precisely gently caress-all since forever. games are what drive that setting, be they of the tabletop or video persuasion, and games are given free reign to disregard canon as much as they drat well please.
