Have you ever looked at DnD-esque RPG's and thought "Wow, some of these classes suck. Who the gently caress wants to be a bard in a world of epic heroism? That's like being the janitor to someone else's CEO."?

Well guess what. Way back when some dude redid the bard class in Neverwinter Nights 2 so that it plays in the same style of Guitar Hero. As in, you literally have the Guitar Hero timed button presses to deal with along with a similar interface. It' called "Lute Hero" and the best part is that it works in combat too.

Features include: Breathing fire at your enemies from behind your mighty guitar as you solo E1M1 from Doom, smiting any that dare to close with you with lightning bolts from the power of your shredding, and just making your enemies randomly explode from how awesome your riffs are.

Seriously, watch the video. It's nuts. Especially if you're familiar with how limited NWN2 was on the module front.

So here's a neat Skyrim mod. It adds in Dwemer mecha. And they are loving badass looking.

There's a bunch of different styles and loadouts. Apparently they also show up in dungeons as well as being rare loot drops. Incidentally, ever wanted to know how the Dragonborn would fare against a GITS style Dwemer spider bot?

And my favorite: Bandito Robot. Who literally can be used to take down aerial dragons by firing explosive flak shells.

Sadly there's no video I can find up on Youtube that isn't loaded up with sex mods. So if you want to see it in action then you'll have to deal with that.

NWS, obviously.

Arma 3 is an amazing platform for modding that sadly goes unappreciated in favor of small scale "dynamic combat" mods that are often just the equivalent of placing a few random assets somewhere to cap or take out.

Don't believe me? Check this out. Someone remade Katamari Damacy in Arma 3.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BAxJDjPUk-g

Edit: Other highlights of Arma 3 modding include:

Whole Lotta Altis --- A map wide customizable progressive simulation of an entire war that starts off with you opting to play as guerilla insurgents or inserted NATO special operatives and ends with a full blown war zone with multiple factions duking it out over the island independent of your efforts.

An increasing number of mech mods that are pilotable. Said mods include Wanzer, Macross, and Mechwarrior mechs. Said mechs can be piloted alone or in duo's. And if you can pilot them alone then you know you are pro at the game, given how hard it is. They're also disturbingly effective in the right hands and situation.

Reposting this from the Skyrim thread, since it's pretty amazing and deserves more attention.

Speaking of talented modders. I meant to post this before I was distracted by the Creation Club thing. This guy is doing some absolutely batshit insane stuff (in a good way) with Skyrim. It's easily the most complex and impressive thing i've seen, and once it's finished will probably make it a whole new game in an actual dynamic world.

http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/10289/? posted:

Organic Factions are groups which can level up, expand territory, secure resources, and be slain completely independent of the player. This makes the game world feel more diverse and alive, and can offer up a whole new set of challenges for the player. Which leaders should you trust? Which underlings might eventually climb the ranks and pose a threat, or become allies? For more info, check out the video below:

His video explains it more here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zCXEsoDA5Cc

It basically uses the faction identifier system as a base to create living breathing factions that slowly conquer the dungeons in the world. So a vampire clan can start out at Bloodlet Throne or Volkihar Castle and start conquering their area of the world, before eventually coming into contact with other factions. Or the Forsworn can eventually get such power and numbers that they can lay siege to Markath. This includes them getting access to unique suppliers and "jungle style" moba camps that help supplement their troops and supplies. So them finding a dungeon with an alchemist in it means they'll have heals and neat buffs, etc, etc, etc.

If they get too strong they can actually out level the player too. But it works, seeing as how each of the leveled characters is persistent. Which means you can run hit and run attacks on a base of operations if the enemy is 20+ levels above you to whittle their numbers down.

What's more, this works as a way to hold the faction up, since the game features working representatives of each faction that act as lynch pins for progression of the faction. If you take out a lieutenant then the whole faction loses it's progression level-wise until a new one is elected and reaches their prior level. You can also assassinate the suppliers and "jungle" camp people to shut down their own supply of troops too. Suffice to say that actually making the world a living and changing thing opens up all sorts of new game play opportunities for different playstyles. Here's a quote that goes into detail on what I mean:

quote:

Features
Independent leveling of NPCs: Both leaders and minions level up independent of the player.
Leaders will have their own unique spells and abilities, many of which will increase in power as they level up. These include use of the [SSE Enhanced AI Framework].
As the leaders level up, they will start to gain a following. These individuals will have their own skills and combat roles.
Once the leaders achieve a certain level of power (levels and followers), they will venture forth on certain days to support and broker alliances with other allies in the area.
Each leader can have one or more favored sub-groups of followers, which will be given special treatment so long as their leader is alive. This can include access to better resources, equipment, and training.
Resource Providers: Alchemists, armorers, etc. can be wooed into supporting an Organic Faction. These Actors will create resources (potions, armor, etc.) which will be shared among Faction members. The player can intercept these goods, depriving the Faction of their benefits while profiting off of their labor.
MOBA-style "jungle" locations / "camps" which the enemy can capture to gain more support troops. The player can observe these troops and take them out before they join the main group.
Organic Factions can establish patrols which prevent the player from Fast Traveling directly into their strongholds. Once the Organic Faction has been beaten back, Fast Travel will once again become available.
Documentation has been released, but is "on pause" while I build out the "Organic Factions Extension".

Demo Faction Features posted:

The first new Organic Faction is located in and around Deepwood Vale (near Solitude). They will eventually gain power and obtain potions from an Alchemist in Druadach Redoubt on Mondays, and visit Blind Cliff Cave on Wednesdays to pick up some well-armored troops. Four of the leaders are unique individuals which will not respawn when slain, either by the player or randomly in the background. Once these are all gone, the Hagravens will nominate a BriarHeart Warrior to take command of the region. If he is slain, another will eventually be nominated to take his place.

He's released a demo of it, turning the Forsworn into their own organic faction. And a second faction is about to be released on Special Edition soon. He's also released a framework mod that lets people design their own organic factions.

He also is hoping the Skyrim community will help him with designing more factions and their AI. Because making something like this is complicated as hell. So if you've got any help to offer posting on the comment page asking him what you can do would be awesome. I'm thinking of volunteering making a few of the "friendly" factions like the Stormcloaks and Legion or the Dawnguard/Volkihar factions into a proper organic faction.

Also, the creation club is going to be a glorious cluster gently caress if Bethesda isn't really careful both on the design and PR end of things.

So War for the Overworld is a pretty fantastic homage to Dungeon Keeper 2 with a few flaws that are hopefully getting fixed in the future. Mostly the lack of a way to tell minions to guard and patrol an area without lots of micro coupled with a lot of the keepers being the same in terms of units and playstyle.

But that's not what this post is about. It's about the insane maps people have made thanks to the recently included workshop support.

Why are they insane? Well...

The mapping utility is detailed enough to let you create pixel art via the preview image. And it's gotten to the point where enough people have started using it for that that the workshop has added it's own category to search by.

Typically i'm as annoyed by porny mods as anyone else. But holy poo poo. It's actually pretty impressive that someone could pull off making cheesecake art using something like that.

Of course, it isn't just used for that.

The actual best mod(ding) is the modding still being done on Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines, because that engine is one of the most unstable pieces of poo poo in the industry, and in fact has it's inventory (and a LOT of other stuff) hard-coded. People are making entire new areas for a game where you can never add a new inventory item ever. It's sheer, unrelenting madness. But at least it's not toxic and garbage madness.

Heck, there's even a team making a prelude mod that lets you play as a hunter and let's you flesh out what was going on before the game started. It includes all new areas, skills, characters, and everything.

There's also the Antribu mod, which is literally nothing but new clans that people were interested in like the Tzimisce, Nagaraja, etc, etc each with their own unique mechanics and drawbacks. Though it turned out that the creator was a bit nuts it did come out in a somewhat playable state.

Apparently he's one of the people on the prelude mod team. So mostly that when he's not working on the community patch. Which is basically what his patch is at this point.

Also, they can definitely add new things in. My best guess at how is that someone somehow decompiled or obtained access to the source code at some point in the past and just aren't telling people outside of the long time modder community. Because at this point many of the long time modders are adding stuff they literally could not add in before, like new characters, items, entire new playable clans with their own mechanics, etc, etc.

Kikas posted:

Wait what the gently caress how does choosing NATO put you on a side?
A less wall of text explanation is that NATO is a popular target for conspiracy theories for people in the US and other places. What's more, who represents those theories and what they represent have changed since the 90's onwards. Nowadays it tends to be the domain of some really crazy, really racist, and all around bigoted people. For a more :words: explanation that's off topic to the forum:

During the 90's there were numerous conspiracy theories about NATO and the UN being a shadowy new world order. However, they were believed in only by the most fringe of crackpots. NATO and the UN were hardly the only group that had such conspiracy theories (and arguably was the least of them, relatively speaking) created about them too. FEMA and numerous other governmental agencies had similar "the government is controlled by an evil conspiracy" theories. Incidentally, this informed pop culture a bit. Games like Deus Ex and shows like the X-Files all played on this stuff with things like UNATCO and the X-Files various story arcs and such.

Most of the guys and gals that believed that stuff back then were just nuts or in really desperate places and needed something to latch on too. They were largely anti-state on (crazy) principles. Then towards the early-middle to middle of the Bush years the right wing media finally started to spin up to it's full inspire-people-to-batshit-crazy-beliefs potential and it started to suck otherwise normal people into those sorts of fringe conspiracy groups. This exacerbated things and brought those beliefs to people that would have otherwise ignored them since a lot of that media was presented as if it had an air of legitimacy to it.

Then when the Obama years rolled around the aforementioned right wing media machine tore off the mask and went "SURPRISE, MOTHERFUCKERS, IT'S ABOUT RACISM/GETTING REPUBLICANS ELECTED ALL ALONG!" and everyone that was hooked into those spheres promptly followed suit as they repeatedly doubled down since they were uncritically listening to them (and therefore trusted them) for well over a decade past when a lot of the FEMA/NATO/UN conspiracy theories got started and were largely abandoned by their original proponents.

Coincidentally, most pop culture portrayals nowadays of things like FEMA, the UN, NATO, etc, etc, as being evil conspiracies tend to be avoided outside of retreads of old games like Deus Ex. Which is probably at least partially because portrayals of these conspiracy theories in that light puts you adjacent to the sort of guy that's so nuts or angry at the world he'd happily genocide the jews/immigrants/lgbt people/whatever their hated enemy of the hour is.

If the game was in development 12 years ago that does put it in the range of it being towards the early Obama/late Bush years. Even so, the timing of it doesn't necessarily mean it's a game from some racist crazy person. Then again, I haven't seen the video of it yet and other people have posted some stuff that makes it look pretty questionable (Like that damned near satanic looking Star of David. That's a big red flag. :stare:) so .

Edit: I forgot that I was going to talk about another mega mod/standalone game I found over the past year called AMC TC before I saw this conversation.

Basically, it's a mod built off a renovated version of the old Duke3D game engine that details what happens when Duke Nukem goes missing and is...Well, the only way to put it is that it's insanely huge and is the work of a ton of modders working together to make what's essentially the Duke Nukem version of the Avengers. Which are predictably all expies of corny heroes from one game or another when they're not just outright assholes that'd be the villain of their own game.

It's literally bigger than most commercial games and is basically every old shooter put together. Quake, DOOM, Duke3d, Blood, Deus Ex, Hexen, and more --- It's all there in a copyright friendly manner. And when I say it mixes games like Doom and Duke3d I do mean that literally. In one mission you can be fighting an army of demons in a level straight out of DOOM and then in the next take on cultists that are basically an expy of Blood's cultists.

And that's before you get into the meat of the gameplay with how each character interacts with the world differently. Hell, this applies to the variability in all the content too. In one mission I was driving a tank through a city as part of a communist revolution with a squad of AI soldiers supporting me in my charge to take the palace from a corrupt dictator. In the next, I had found out that a different character could engage in a freaking hacking minigame that doubled as a jumping puzzle. Said hacking minigame then transitioned into being able to control a giant killer robot because hey why the gently caress not?

Basically, not only is the gameplay of the gunplay (or sword play/magic play) represented in the characters you have available but their respective enemies from their games are there too with some upgrades and additions. It's nuts. And it's actually kind of loving awesome once you get over the Duke3d era jank and the corny voice acting. The latter of which is apparently being worked on.

The game is as mentioned quite huge. But how huge it actually is tends to shock the poo poo out of everyone that plays it. With around 8ish unique playable characters that are all copyright friendly versions of protagonists from old games, a full scale X-COM-esque campaign and research system based around salvage and exploring action sites between doing investigation oriented missions, mass combat "war" style missions, and classic shooter style missions, and an insanely huge world that starts with the entire solar system and then escalates to nearby solar systems before somehow topping itself again with literally a galaxy it's quite possibly the biggest old school game mod out there. Notably, it's still in production despite running on the old Duke 3D/Blood game engine.

I can talk about it more if people want, but in the mean time i'd suggest checking out that IcarusLives guy that does a lot of reviews of mods of old games if it sounds interesting. He did a nearly 20 minute piece on it worth watching despite him having to cut it short.

I say he had to cut it short because after trying to explain everything about it and eventually giving up (He himself points out the video would be hours long if he did and he had already played for 6 hours by that point just to get that video with all it's info up.) he eventually just lapses into raving about how loving huge the game is and how ridiculous it is that these modders have done something this big for this long with pretty much no one noticing.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uZDtipqEnZA

Note that it took him 20 minutes to go over episode 1. There are three episodes out with at least a fourth one coming and a fifth planned. :stare:

I am fairly sure that's a piss take but I can't quite be sure, given the context :v:

It's definitely serious. The guy is in the comments defending his choice as politely as he can without coming off as completely loony tunes.

They follow the gospel of St Albert, and want Complete. Global. Saturation.

Do deliberate bloopers by voice actors count as mods to the game if they're altered to be paired with the game itself? Tempted to post the bloopers for Wesker's performance here too.

At one point the voice actor straight up parodies his line and would fit this thread. Complete. Global. Masturbation.

Eh, the heck with it. Here it is.

You'd be surprised at the number of people who really don't get obsessed with anime art being 'cringe'

In the case of the anime waifu game, it's not even that it's anime. You could do a game with a cell shaded or outright anime art style and have it look gorgeous. Granted, it's hard as heck to do and expensive in the latter case.

This is just some guy's soft core wank bait masked in a better version of MnB. It's like taking a dump on top of a sundae and calling it chocolate when people complain about your creepy tastes.

Here's a mod for Total Warhammer 2 that adds a curious Bastiladon (an ankylosaurus-like dinosaur) that tags along with an archmage.

Inspired by this picture:

And his unit card is from this fanart :3: :

Just don't let him get the Sword of Khaine:

So I gotta ask. What happens if the Bastiladon gets the Sword of Khaine?

Because i'm assuming it starts with the music from Doom playing and ends with a dead army or something like that.

All of his mods are impressive.

That is the guy who made Hyrule: Total War. I did a lot of large effort posts on it way back when, and suffice to say that it was basically TW Warhammer before Warhammer existed only with extra bells and whistles. For instance, the Shiekah faction didn't even have a conquest oriented gameplay. Instead they were the secret police of Hyrule (Which was split into playable provinces, meaning that if you played as Hyrule itself it had a sort of Rome-esque set up where it had to keep them in line while waging war.), sending in their ultra-elitist playstyle armies to take out threats to it. Or if you wanted to let it happen, you could betray Hyrule and get that wizard antagonist; getting to recruit the cool looking soldiers from a Link to the Past while transitioning to a proper nation playstyle.

Likewise, Labyrinna or whatever it was called was basically colonialism.txt with extra gunpowder units, magic punk mechs, and brutal WW1 style trench warfare later on. This could occur against more fantasy oriented armies which was :black101: as gently caress when you factor in all the batshit crazy stuff like the Gohma Horde (Basically, the Tyranids if they existed in Warhammer FB and went up against a somewhat steampunk-esque WW1 army that used trench warfare as a doctrine. Take a moment to envisage that scene for a moment.), etc, etc and is something that the TW Warhammer devs haven't done yet.

TL;DR: Each faction was genuinely interesting. Sadly though the engine literally couldn't handle all the stuff he was doing like naval combat and multiple settings/worlds so he had to switch over to a much more scaled down RTS after trying for years to get it to not be so unstable.

Yeah I I tried to play it a while back but was faced with crash after crash on top of your standard M2TW jank. He's remaking it on the 0 A.D. engine which is more like an AOE game.

If you can find the right older version and patch the exe to have 64 bit memory allocation it doesn't usually crash. You miss out on some neat features though.

It's a shame he's doing it on 0 A.D. since not only is it super janky but the AI isn't there for it, meaning that only like two nations are playable against in skirmish so far since they have to design the AI. Also, the scale of the game is cut way down.

This is unironically awesome. Sounds like some old school Armored Core music too, for bonus points.
