Yeah, things are lovely everywhere, but people have their own poo poo to deal with and honestly that takes priority.

Also, you know, things are kinda lovely for people in those third world places largely because of those same 1%ers.

Yes, this. The wife and I are doing (comparitively) extremely well, and we budget heavily. However, due to rising costs outside of our control (gas, electricity, property taxers) and a housing-market that has stagnated in our local area, I stress immensely about money. We're working hard at trying to pay things off as quickly as we can to get ahead of the game, but nothings ever cheap or easy.

And we still have 15k worth of windows, plus the roof, and likely the deck to do in the next 3-5 years. Those are the only things left that can reduce our energy usage and save us money on bills. So its a while before I'm "ahead" - and that's also just hoping that neither of our jobs disappears (which isn't too likely, thank gently caress).

Things suck for a lot of people, and saying someones suffering is subjectively less because someone elses is objectively worse is a false dichotomy. Looking at our northern communities (especially Native towns), and its like a third-world in the first-world. There is a huge amount of income disparity and the people at the top either really don't care, or have completely lost touch.

I'm 36 - born in 1980, so - early millenial, maybe? I've worked hard my entire life, have 2 degrees, and I've never been able to get ahead. I'm not anywhere near as behind as I could be, but after spending 18 years in the workforce, I'm not where I ~feel~ like I should be. I haven't always been smart, but I've spent a lot of years scrimping and saving. Its a lovely, stressful thing.

Pardon the rant, it was a frustrating day at work.

Unfortunately we are currently without functional cameras. And the mall doesn't have surveillance either. Our system was ancient and finally took a poo poo so while we have powered cameras in the store they no longer actually function. And the mall lacks them due to some insurance loophole.

next time call the cops first then security, I'm a security guard and tell my co workers to do this as well, because if it's a crime that needs the police asap (assault, robbery, attempted murder, etc) otherwise you're just wasting time because that's what I'm gonna do once i figure out what happened anyway. The kids were gone before I was even up off the floor and it took me forever to find my glasses. I used to work security at a bar and experience told me that calling the cops would have been a waste of their time. It's been two hours and I couldn't pick them out of a lineup if you put a gun to my head. Also they were minors so they'd have gotten a slap on the wrist.

So why were you mad the security guy didn't call the cops then? You don't have cameras? Lotta times kids causing trouble roam in groups, and I've had luck with cops catching up to them loving off somewhere else in the area. But if you can't even identify them yeah that would be tough.

Also just because they're minors doesn't mean they don't have some strict rear end parents to answer to. I've witnessed some pissed off loving parents coming to get their kids, and I knew their lives were going to be hell once they got home :v:

My post could have been clearer, I called security, they never answered. I didn't bother called the police because I knew it was a waste of time. I wasn't mad. Our camera system took a massive poo poo recently. We're currently in lease negotiations and part of it would include an upgraded security system if the mall locks in our current rent. And like I said, aside from looking like smug little shits I couldn't ID them if I had to.

God-loving-drat I am sore. 6 hours in a UPS truck today. The driver told me he wants me with him whenever possible, saying that I bust my rear end more than 99% of the seasonal helpers he's worked with. It's a 20 minute drive for me to meet up with him, but we seem to get along really well.

And bust my rear end I did. Or kneecaps anyway. Only took my sunglasses, since yesterday we finished before dark. Didn't have my regular ones (they were back in my car), tripped over a massive crack in a sidewalk while not wearing glasses in the dark. 193 pounds slammed into my kneecaps, then palms. Upside is I chucked the package into the lawn on my way down, so it didn't get damaged, and I don't have any bruises. Palms are skinned a little, but no blood. Driver was freaking out thinking he'd have to report an injury (and also lose his helper halfway through a bitch of a route). Knee caps only hurt for about 15 minutes, the only things that hurt now are the things that always hurt when I go from sedentary to walking/running a lot in short order (shins, ankles, calves).

Nothing some ibuprofin won't fix if I do wind up being sore in the morning. Good thing I went with jeans today; I was originally going to wear shorts. If I'd done that my knees would have been bleeding pretty good. He handed me one of his flashlights afterwards and told me to use it on the sidewalks; he said he busted his rear end a few days ago over the same thing (busted sidewalk at night).

As a customer, I generally like them. They're notorious for intermingling stock from various vendors if the UPC matches, which has led to a lot of chinese knockoffs being sold as the real deal, even if the "sold by" is the manufacturer themselves, if it's "fulfilled by Amazon". They're also a bit bad about selling returns as brand new, if you can't tell anything has been used. It's one thing if it's an unopened return, but I've bought "brand new" items from them that had obviously been opened and repacked.

They're a loving horrible company to partner with or work for, though. Actual employees get poo poo-all for benefits outside of discounted stock and medical insurance, and a small discount off of a small number of orders per year.

I was enough of a sperg with init strings and sounds in my short stint at Internet America that if someone was having speed issues, they got sent to me. At least on dialup. I was lost on ISDN stuff.

Before I moved out here, there was a freenet in my home town (Rio Grande Freenet - it's long dead now, as are the people who were involved with running it). It was barebones enough that they had something like 60 external USR 14.4k Sportster modems. And of course, modems die now and then, but with no way of knowing what phone number was for what modem (they were all grouped into 1 number anyway, and there wasn't any real communication behind the freenet admin and PBX admin), I'd go over there and play "find the hosed up modem" occasionally in exchange for a t-shirt or lunch. Usually by physically swapping the lower use modems with the higher use ones and listening for the ones having issues connecting.

It was hosted by a community college, so they were very limited in what they could do in terms of equipment and phone lines. They had tons of phone lines, just didn't have a PBX admin that was particularly helpful. And I think they only had one direct dial number for all 60 modems.

I'll cop to not having fully researched the 3rd point but holy cow am I tired of everything I do in IT.

Well, the dude I work with at UPS (I'm doing a seasonal driver helper job) was a data analyst for 22 years. Got sick of sitting at a desk, got a CDL, drove 18 wheelers, got sick of that, and got hired on as a driver by UPS.

They hire from outside rarely, but it does happen. Fucker is bringing home high 5 figures if he takes it easy, and if he wants OT, he breaks 6 figures - gets OT after 8 hours, and this time of year, his paychecks triple thanks to mandatory OT. It's also a union gig with a real union (Teamsters), so as long as you don't assault/kill people, you're generally untouchable.

Also you get to be in loving good shape. He's worked for them for about a year and a half, and said he's down to half the weight he was when he started. I've been doing it 3 days and I'm already down 7 pounds. :stonk:

This post is mostly in jest, but for the dude I've been working with, it was exactly what you're bitching about. Also by the time you're done with your day you're too tired to drink. You DO NOT want to work in one of their warehouses, I've been there/done that. Lost 30 or 40 pounds in 3 months, but was too sore to do anything else once my 4-5 hour shift was done, and they're still paying warehouse guys the same thing that paid me.. 13 years ago (small change, but it's literally change... less than a 25 cent/hr difference).

This post isn't really that serious, but in this dude's case, he went from a 6 figure desk job at a Fortune 100 company to delivering packages, and he's making about the same money with far more job security and benefits. And you don't need a CDL to drive the package cars (the stereotypical trucks you see around town) - hydraulic brakes, GVW of 19,999 lbs. Do need to know how to drive manual though. If I ever see a public opening for a UPS package car driver, I'm going to be all over that poo poo. If you make it to package car driver, you're making bank, and you get fantastic benefits. And you can ditch the gym membership... but you'd better set aside a lot of money for new clothes and uniforms as you drop weight.

Serious part of this post... I'm looking for any real career to get into right now that isn't a desk job, my only "careers" have been food service, retail, and delivery. I turned down the job with Nissan, mainly because of the commute (35 miles each way on a highway notorious for being bumper to bumper almost 24/7). I have an interview with Lowe's tomorrow. Retail is where I've always excelled, but I want a clear path to management if I'm going to go back into retail. I'm just barely inside of the "proper" DFW metroplex (by about 2 miles), so I've been trying to find stuff within a 30 minute drive - which includes parts of 3 counties. That Nissan job would have been up to 2, even 3 hours each way, depending on weather, wrecks, suicides by jumping off bridges, etc. Even on a good day it would have been a minimum of 45. If I'm gonna be driving that much, it's not gonna be my own car. I've been in food service management before, and call center management, I can't see retail management being that different aside from an eye for different kinds of detail.

That is absolutely not an 80s logo. I think your dad is right, I'm thinking 50s-60s for the top, and 60s-70s for the bottom.

ExplodingSims posted:

This. My stepfather and mother threw out (well, donated) all of my grandma's vintage stereo equipment. Marantz equipment (modern and vintage), KLH speakers from the 60s that needed refoaming, but still sounded amazing. They knew I love music, and they know I love quality music equipment even more. I was devastated.. and I'm still angry about it. It's been 15 years now. This happened while she was still alive too, but after she was moved into assisted living. My stepdad did say I could have his long-retired Sansui receiver (model 881 from the mid 70s), but it needs a lot of work to get going again. It still powers on, and still puts out (really good) sound, but has a decent ground loop hum now, and all of the knobs are scratchy as poo poo. I'm sure the caps are long dried out, and a lot of the lights are out. One of these days I'll pick it up and track down schematics for it. I think the light bulbs will be the hardest parts to find. Ironically, the only reason he never threw it out when it started acting up is... he bought it with the money he inherited from his father (everything else he got with that money is gone now, except for a gun, AFAIK). He did say it's always had a bit of an issue with running a bit "hot" on one channel and frying speakers on that channel, but I've had some low end Infinitiys hooked up to it and they sounded fantastic (and even volume on both channels) aside from the hum. Its output is low enough that any modern speaker should handle it easily.

My mother cherishes knick knacks and photos - I do too, though not to the same extent. My stepdad is more of a "if I'm not going to use it soon, throw it away". I've gotten rid of a lot of my own stuff by taking his attitude, since I used to be a bit of a hoarder in many ways (especially electronics), but I will never throw anything passed down to me. And if something works and either has some use or some memorabilia, I'll sell it or donate it (or pass it along to another family member) if I don't plan to hang on to it.

(goddamn this got way too long, even for an STR mmmmmegapost... I've been in a UPS truck all day, and went to 2 interviews before that...)

Work never followed you home and when you left your job it all stayed right there.

That last part is huge. I'm glad my new job is 99% left at work. I'll bring the laptop home on weekends ~just in case~, but I haven't even booted it when home yet. Albeit in theory I'm on-call, we get about 2-3 calls a year on weekends, and nobody will care if I don't pick-up. If I do, I'll get comp time out the rear end for it, so I kind of hope I get a few and can snag a day or two extra off here and there :P

I get half!!
Not sure this is the correct place to ask, but I've never been in this sub-forum before, and I didn't see any other obvious thread about it. I'm looking to purchase an audio dashboard to replace my radio, namely one that will allow my iphone to connect wirelessly. Is there a thread where I could get product recommendations for that?
