After many hours of labor, I finally got all my ratings and reviews moved over from Criticker to Letterboxd. http://letterboxd.com/caiman/ How do I remove a film from my film count? I tested to see what happens when I rate a movie and then un-see and un-rate it. What happened was my film count went up when I added it, but did NOT go back down when I un-rated/un-saw it. Am I missing something about how the site sums up my films? Edit: looks like it just needed some time. The number's correct now. Here's me: https://letterboxd.com/xenomrph/ I like the iOS app, but I'd like it a lot more if it didn't gobble up all my storage space by downloading as many movie posters as it possibly could. I've (possibly temporarily) purged the app from my phone for now, after it ballooned to over 2 goddamn gigabytes. The app makes it super-easy to add movies to my "watched" list by picking a genre and letting it throw random movie titles at me, it's way easier than trying to remember every movie and key in the titles by hand. Can you do something similar with the website?

Here's my user page! Been a huge fan of the site & use it everyday since late 2011. For TIFF every September, we've got a Letterboxd in Toronto list, where we discuss our film schedules and plan meet-ups during the festival. We had a good 15 people together on day 1, and on our 2nd meet-up [of course the one I missed], Letterboxd Admins actually paid for a round of beers. We've been doing it a few years now and know people pretty well ranging from the Toronto area, to New York, to Nashville, and as far as Norway. Here's a collection of other "Letterboxd in ________" city gatherings, if interested. I use the site mainly as a way to track (and sometimes review) my own films I watch, but of course it's great fun to create lists/tags and comment on others'. The people there are typically great and respectful. I've come across very little trolling, but I don't exactly go looking for it either. I also have the app on my iPad, but I mainly use it's desktop site as a great time-filler at work. I'm also a Patron [the level above "Pro"] and figure for all my time spent using the site, it's the least I can do. The "Year in Review" thing is fun in itself.

I end up doing a dumb thing where the stars I assign a movie are more relative to the genre or directors other works, depending on what I'm more familiar with, but never disclosing that like an idiot. Example, I went on a tear of Tati films and then saw Hell Or High Water tonight - Hell Or High Water is basically rated against the modern (ie post 80s) western, as well as relative to what its competing against in cinemas right now. The Tati I watched was more taken in comparison to the other shorts, and Jour de Fete was more in comparison to the silents it homages and betters, rather than the shorts. Its confusing and arbitrary, but I think there's very, very few films thay aren't worth watching at all. There's a lot of films that are dogshit in comparison to their peers, but it's rare that a film will have absolutely nothing to take away from. Fifteen of Many posted:

Yeah, I can't just have one scale where everything is ranked against everything else. Things are generally more relative. Kind of the way Ebert used to justify his ratings. It's why LEGO Movie (which I think is one of the all-time great family movies) has the same score on my criticker (working on the letterboxd) as Under the Skin, even though I vastly prefer the latter.

It's a gut feeling. It's a quick answer to the question "how much did I like this?" See, I personally don't like to differentiate between the concepts of "good movies" vs "movies I like". If I liked it, it's good, whether that's due to technical excellence or campy fun. Both 2001: A Space Odyssey and House on Haunted Hill are 5-star movies.

Which is pretty generic, and some can be fairly arbitrary going anywhere from 0 to 3... I like your logical reasons better than my one-word descriptions. I may adjust mine to make more sense. I also haven't had time to write all the reviews I've wanted to lately. It's tough trying to catch up when I'll usually use my free time to watch something vs write a few reviews.

Edit 2 for content: I spent all day on a plane working on a presentation for work instead of thinking and writing words about movies and when I got to the client site they cancelled the meeting.

The more I play around on this site, the more I appreciate all the little features the designers put into it. Cool thing I just discovered: go to a list and select "Fade watched films" from the filters to get a nice view of all your unwatched films in that list. This is great for "checklist" type lists like They Shoot Pictures Don't They.

Yeah I use the fade as my default too. I was skimming through people's lists, my favourite element and wish they'd do more stuff like it - maybe a blog style feature etc - and I saw one of the OPs lists that interested me and the fade let me comment on it easily.

Yeah fade is a feature that makes so much sense. It's such an aesthetically pleasing compromise. I hope more sites, but just in the realm of movies, learn from Letterboxd's intuitive design

Is there a way to like save/bookmark other people's lists? That'd be nice Also I really just want this because the sorting stuff is already so robust but since you can set other people's lists to show movies you've seen it'd be cool if you could then organize it by the date you watched them.

I used to have a Letterboxd account, but had gotten a bit bored with the site and had deleted it. This thread made me interested in trying it out again though. The import feature seems a little wonky on here- a few movies I have on this might be inaccurately marked as watched.

I've probably just misspent the last hour copy and pasting a ton of reviews I wrote years ago for my old blog, which now exists only in MySQL form. I'll never read them again, nor do I encourage anyone else to, but I quite like that I've got pretty much everything I've written on movies in one place now. 106 reviews altogether, it's quite neat to see it all really.
