Hopefully there will be a decent presence in ##gooncrawl this time around - I'll be cursing my 'luck' (*coughbaddecisionscough*) there.

EDIT: Makhlebchat time. Which do you think makes a better base for relying on Minor Destruction until getting Invo 20 as fast as possible - DsFi or DsMo? Mo gives you the ability as soon as you find an altar, but I think the skill distribution on Fi gives you a better chance to actually survive to getting there (which with DS apts isn't necessarily a given).

Suggesting that someone read/join the c.r.d mailing list seems like a form of cruel and unusual punishment that ought to be unconstitutional. Then again, maybe you enjoy occasional bouts of "what can I cut/take away to feel again?", interspersed between random technical quesions/fixes.

From a technical perspective, yes. Not everything has been great. Race removals and the wand swap (not the upcoming removal) are two that stick out off the top of my head.

At this point, I probably should just fork the game into my own little private branch and start changing things to put in what I want, but I only play webtiles and not having a way to play anywhere through a browser would be a deal-breaker.

Sure, but let's be honest here: the most Crawl way for this to play out is for the wand removal to go through with the 'balancing act' of more healing/tele/etc. pots to counteract, then after a short amount of time the pot increase to be removed as 'making the game too easy' (possibly at specific points, possibly in general). Someone not involved in the removal will ask if anything else needs to be looked at in the wake of this reversion. The answer will be a resounding no on the basis that just leaving in the wand removal with no balancing act is more 'interesting'. It will never be looked at again. (This isn't even a dig, just a prediction)

All of this has happened before, and all of this will happen again.

good for winrate? gods that help you a lot in the earlygame(ex:fedhas, yred, oka, trog) are the best here, because that is when the game is the most dangerous.

good for realtime speedrun? gods that help your survivability and power in a consistent way while requiring few button presses and little complexity(oka, trog) are good here, because the more buttons you press and decisions you make the more time you take.

good for turncount speedrun? ely, chei and trog are all good here via reducing turns needed to remove monsters.

good for zigs/other goofy extended powertrips? mak is real dominant here, though TSO, Veh, zin and Zin all good too.


chei's better than qaz but still fairly niche. only really "good" at turncount speedruns and even then only barely makes it into the top 10 runs there, beaten by mostly ely

This makes me want a God that has more powers the less piety you have. God only knows how that would work, though.

trivia: quick blades can't get speed brand. they're already Quick!

also, speed brand tends to be bad on fast weapons and good on slow ones, so you wouldn't really want it anyway.

Would VS be an exception to that since it seems like you want as fast an attack speed as possible for proc bites?

Removing ?id and thus requiring people to either waste (sometimes rare) potions to find out what they are or risk drinking the wrong thing at the wrong time only really has the effect of making the player feel bad for no good reason. If you want to auto-id potions when picked up, then sure ( I imagine you don't).

I can't seem to get a GrBe off the ground and it makes me want to throw a monitor through a window but of all things this GhMo of the Council is flowing like water through Lair so far and I feel awesome dancing around people slicing them up with claws.

Is your line at the very top of your rcfile, and do you have any junk in your rcfile on a superseding server? (CAO, CBRO, CDO, CJR, CPO, CUE, CWZ, CXC, LLD is the order) If not, my last guess is just that it hasn't updated yet for some reason.

All of this has actually convinced me to pull the trigger on something I've been idly wondering: start with the version of Crawl I first started playing (0.5.1 way back when), and apply only the things I like from each patch going forward to current. I'm expecting a sort of beautiful, disjointed mess.

Random mutation idea: Magnetic Antipathy - When an enemy in LOS moves towards you, it (sometimes/frequently/always) teleports right next to you instead.

Seems like it would be an interestingly mixed bag (more beneficial for melee on the whole, but also makes it harder for them to break LOS on things like smiters)

random idea2: Distortion Nexus - Player has a (rare/occasional/frequent) chance to teleport/blink all enemies in LOS to a random location that is still in LOS. Sort of a reverse Teleportitis (of the old kind).

Random idea I had for a new DS-level mutation (I thought it was interesting):

Magical Conduit - Gives a chance to cast a random damaging or debuffing (if valid) spell at an enemy in range (could be as if cast from the PC or smite-targetted). Power level ceiling (random from 1-ceiling) and available spells dependent on rank of the mutation. Spell cast not always guaranteed to be effective against the target (doesn't take into account resistances or immunities).
