(1) financial contributions to people who could stop imminent changes i didn't like (aclu)
(2) time contributions to help humans directly affected by coming change (this volunteer thingy)
(3) change the stupid system that got us here (this is the what i mean by "political") and i'm kind of stymied on this because getting involved in politics makes my head want to explode. i mean i sign petitions and i'll call politicians like greg suggested, but i kind of thought i could find a volunteer gig helping a group working to change the system and i haven't figured that part out yet. give me time i'm kind of moving at shell shocked speed right now

there are lots of volunteer jobs for people with all skill sets. google "volunteer opportunities" and your city name. you probably have a volunteer connection kind of website that works like a job board but for unpaid work. there's something you can do

Hey guys, I lurk here sometimes and used to post quite a bit here way way back in the day via a different account but I feel compelled to chime in. Just wanted to say that, as a dude who's generally predisposed to feeling down, I'm taking time right now in the short term to use this feeling as fuel to work on some aspects of myself that I've been hesitant to start on. After how rough last week was, and how rough I got on myself as a result, I'm now endeavoring to take some time off the booze, try to eat better, and excersize more regularly. It's helping.

I have every intention of getting more and more involved in making a positive impact in my community and my country, but I honestly don't think I can fully commit to those goals until I've made some real improvements within. If you feel you need to do the same, I personally think that too is important and good and admirable. And in the meantime if you have people you love, you can hold them and let them know what they mean to you.

It might not be up your alley but special needs organizations often need weekend help and the special olympics is actually a really cool organization that is always looking for people to help at the main events and also as aides and coaches for weekly practices. Most require a CORI and a SORI check though.

They also do a lot of advocacy for sexual assault victims in Congress, working to help pass protections and clearly define consent definitions in states where vague laws lead to miscarriages of justice. I love RAINN.

I have developed a completely neutral opinion to this current state of events, and I hope to make through these next four years all right. And yet when I tell DnD this, they call me the poster child for FYGM. Can't I move on with my life and make the best of things?

thats a really good idea, ill look tonight. I don't know exactly what a CORI/SORI check are but I assume they are just background checks to make sure i'm not a terrible person

all they'll find is im just a 20 something white dude with an IT degree and no criminal past. so this may be a good thing for me to volunteer for

you might really like it, some people don't and it doesn't mean they aren't good people just that it's not their thing to do. the vast majority of the special needs community is incredibly empathetic and compassionate and very fun but challenging to work with. volunteers fill a really unique niche in that most of these people are aware that their everyday staff are paid to spend time with them so when someone shows up who is doing it for free it can be an incredibly uplifting thing for those who you are helping.

also not to sound too cheesy or after school special-like but working with people can teach you more about yourself and your own limitations and talents and can help you appreciate the little things in life more.

eonwe

i dont think that sounds cheesy at all

You're all awesome and inspiring.

I came out as trans on FB after the election and it was pretty scary but it has been really uplifting. I spent a few days writing a letter out explaining what that's like and I've been told by a few people that it helped them understand things better. I'm a bit biased, but I think minorities sharing sympathetic stories can do a lot of good to put a face to an issue and make things that much easier for those to come.

I also got a job at Goodwill today and I'm really excited to work for a nonprofit and feel like I'm doing something for the community instead of for some butt somewhere.

I've written and spoken (in front of my whole company!) about my bipolar disorder, and my experience agrees. it's scary and painful but years later I'm still getting little messages from people saying that I helped them with their own situation or understanding a loved one's. sharing works.

This weekend i went out with the wife and kids to joshua tree with no cell phones or internet, just a good couple days climbing boulders.Between work and school I haven't been home as much as I should and it's good to know that my kids are still growing up right and are all around awesome dudes.

my oldest got a junior park ranger badge and was super serious about his pledge to protect and preserve natural parks now :3:

I wrote a long post about how coming out can really affect the attitude of those around you in a good way and yet it is sadly dangerous enough that it requires courage, but i thought it was a bit off topic so I'm condensing it to this. Thank you for coming out, it requires courage but it shouldn't, and it has a positive effect on lovely things that shouldn't be lovely in the first place but they are.

One thing that I don't think I've seen, or maybe I've missed, is that a lot of libraries need volunteers. I was pretty much a feral child fed books and raised by librarians. My relationships with libraries and reading are probably the only reasons that I'm not a weird religious country bumpkin like the rest of my family.

Also, they have like movies and comic books and stuff have you seen this? I watched all of Monk through my library.

That should work and it's a great idea! If they don't add it to their collection they'll use them in book sales to raise funds.

FCKGW posted:

Depends on the library! Most libraries have donation policies dictating what they do and don't take, and if they're really good they'll have that on their website. some don't (see: all the libraries I catalog for), so it varies. Give them a call and they'll let you know!

CDs and especially DVDs will probably have them over the moon :)

in addition to volunteering, libraries rely on Friends of the Library groups. Friends groups can coordinate fundraising, promotion, programs and volunteering, and, politically, act as advocates when a case needs to be made for why libraries need funding. Many libraries will already have Friends groups that you can join, but some don't and really need help starting one. The funding and promotion that Friends groups bring in are so important to a library's functioning.

Trans LifeLine is raising money right now (and participates in a lot of employer matching programs!) at this link: http://www.translifeline.org/donate

Trans LifeLine offers free, compassionate, non-judgemental, non-affiliated phone and internet-based support for people of all genders in crisis, and is raising money to support its bottom line. It's run by some pretty fantastic people in San Francisco. You can also volunteer, if you would like. Even sharing the link or talking about trans*/gender issues helps.
