It's not over and there's work to be done! If you want to get involved in worthy causes in any way, this is the thread for you. This is a place for activism, advocacy, and support. Be respectful and be kind. Be open-hearted and open-minded.

We'll try to cover a very broad range of organizations (international, national and local) that are worthy of your time and energy. The following is by no means a complete list, so I urge you to post information and I'll add them to the lists as we go. I plan to cover each group more in depth and list ways you can assist each group. If you have a blurb you'd like to write for a group, I can quote and add to the description. Please post any suggestions you may have! I'd like to cover local activism and political efforts as well in the near future, so give input now.

I am more than happy to help you find local groups doing the kind of work that interests you. Please post in this thread or PM me and we can get to work!

The List

American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU)

A national organization that takes on legal battles to protect individual rights and civil liberties.

Campaign Zero

A national organization dedicated to ending police violence in the United States.

In addition to donations of food, clothing, and cash, you can also donate goods for them to sell at their thrift store, or services to help with things such as skills coaching, helping with events, or even administrative duties such as grant writing. In doing some research on the group, I learned that every success in LGBTQ rights comes with a backlash of kids getting kicked out of their homes; something that I had never really thought about or considered since I'm lucky enough to be a straight cis dude. For example, after the SCOTUS decision that legalized gay marriage, they went from 75 kids a month to 300. I can't imagine what kind of a surge they might be getting after this election... Especially since winter finally seems to be showing up and temperatures are predicted to dip into 40s and 30s. I'm going to go ahead and send them some socks from their wish list.

National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP)

A national non profit organization for protecting the rights of all people and for ending racial discrimination.

Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN)

A national non profit group that spends 93 cents of every dollar donated on directly helping survivors and preventing sexual violence. We have a very cool thread going where goons have so far raised $25,000 to help the cause!

Planned Parenthood

A national non profit health care organization that provides reproductive health services and advocates for reproductive healthcare rights.

Southern Poverty Law Center

A national non profit organization that combats discrimination and hate through awareness and through the courts.

Remember that one man and one party cannot stop or crush the promise of this country. We must work to the bone and struggle with all our might because America is not America for everyone. Street protests are high visibility but there are plenty of other things like house parties, door knocking, and regular old fundraising that can have an even more profound effect over time! It can be easy to glamorize a big rally but you gotta put time in on the fundamentals too.

I've seen some people dismissing peaceful protests in my feed. I think this is fundamentally incorrect, for two reasons:

1) Chanting in large groups builds collective meaning/identity/solidarity, which is a resource you can then use for other things. Don't ask me why humans work this way. But it works for religion, it works for sports, it works for music, it works for politics. Celebrating the Eucharist "doesn't do anything" except it totally, totally does.

2) Even if you believe that all politics is fundamentally about violence and coercion. Hostile actors frequently resort to proxies (however rough) for who would win in an unlimited conflict to determine the balance of power - you can see this from arms races to elections themselves to sparring bucks. No peaceful protest that shows off its numbers, discipline, youth, and enthusiasm is actually peaceful, insofar as those are proxies for winning an actual confrontation.

This applies even to protests that are explicitly mobilized according to religious pacifism. Remember that scene in "Gandhi" where everyone lines up in a polite little row to get clobbered half to death by police? That's actually a pretty incredible show of potential force. It is, indeed, "virtue signalling," which is a fine and a real and a good thing.

The criticality points (which are fuzzy so it looks more like a gradient in practice) are:

1) Can you show that you would win in a street confrontation with a counter-movement? If so, you can dissuade them from enacting extralegal violence that the police might otherwise allow.
2) Can you show that you would win a street confrontation with the police? If this is the case then the state basically has to fold or at least incorporate you, although for that exact reason it's very very difficult to reach. (Katharine Chorley's "Armies and the Art of Revolution" should be sobering reading if your Plan A is to storm the barricades.)

Classical fascism relies upon extralegal but legally tolerated violence from rightist activists, so it's crucial that the trend of the last several decades of racist demonstrations being consistently met with larger counter-demonstrations (ideally with a contingent of fit punk kids boasting about their eagerness to fight, even if police prevent anything from actually happening) continue. Proving the power to assemble in large crowds independently serves the same purpose.

One of the most important things about force is that it doesn't have to be actively used to be effective. A crowd of thousands of peaceful protestors is in many ways harder to deal with than thousands of people on a rampage.
