As someone who has been disgusted by politics my whole life and felt like my involvement didn't matter I'm glad to feel motivated to do something, with my voice, my vote and what money I can spare. I have alot to learn about activism.

Oh yeah here are some more things you might want to know: 1. Water makes pepper spray worse. Use milk or liquid antacid and water*. Don't wear contacts. Johnson and Johnson baby shampoo is also what PD trainees use when going through tear gas training, FYI. 2. If you get tear gassed, when you get home, put the contaminated clothes in a plastic bag for later decontamination and shower with cold water to avoid opening your pores. 3. Come with friends and don't get separated. Avoid leaving the crowd and watch out for police snatch squads. 4. Beware undercovers, but beware snitchjacketing and collaborator 'peace police' even more. 5. Those who would prefer to see you quiet, docile, and at home are very good at combing through pictures and doxxing people. Mask up, alter your appearance. 6. Document, document, document. Please don't share this status. Copy paste it without attribution. *liquid antacid can scratch corneas. It's ok in a pinch, but milk is better.

Whether that takes me overseas or right here. Like most people on the left I'm a little bit shaken by recent events and I'm just trying to figure out the best way to be of use to others right now.

I'm going to call a meeting with all my students next week to talk out what's going on and hopefully get our local Rep in on that conversation. We live in a blue state and should be writing to our congressmen to actively resist whatever regressive policies are going to be spewing out of the fed these next four years. We don't have to listen, we don't have to just lie down and take what Trump says. We should honestly be taking a page from the GOP handbook on this one and making every step to delay + ignore federal policies within our own state, while running progressive candidates at every level. While we can't change the picture nationally for at least another two years, it gave me great peace of mind today to remember that oh yeah, we don't have to obey any of this poo poo, and whatever the consequences of that may be, none of us should be lying down and taking it.

I walked in a protest today but it was only about 500 college students in the most liberal part of rural massachusetts so I don't think it really counts one old lady pulled over and yelled that we were all babies so that was fun

A common refrain from people in Latin America who have created cooperative communities, and are visited by American socialists - is that the Americans should go home and improve things here, so that they don't have to worry about America making things worse there. The immediate concern is to batten down the hatches, and prepare for the Trump storm that's about to hit society.

That's a very good point, and in the immediate term I'm going to do whatever I can to help the very vulnerable populations that I serve here. There's a lot that can and should be done to ensure that we withstand the next four years, at least at the local level. We don't have to accept whatever policies are coming out of Washington if we can help it.

The single most important thing any of you can do is to start voting. Get your friends to vote, your family, your coworkers, everyone you know, everyone who will listen. Stop needing to be inspired, vote! Vote in EVERY election! Boring local elections are super important. Your county representatives actions are the ones that most effect you. These people are the ones that draw the district lines. They are the ones that make gerrymandering happen. Your vote matters the most in these small, local elections and have lasting effects and influence on the higher branches of government. And it can really make a difference. My old home town had an election in the Board of Education, a beloved teacher and school counselor was in the running. A bunch of her former students rallied and voted for her. She won by 117 votes. She cut both the coaches and the administrator's paychecks and used that money to increase teacher's salaries and hire more teachers bringing the student to teacher ratio down from 37 to 1 to 21 to 1. Grades increased as students were able to get more individual attention. The school Rating improved, people started to move into the town for the school. Revenue increased.  Get off your asses and get out and vote.
