I remember the protests in Europe against the Iraq war and the open hostility to GW Bush. It was something but it wasn't much. Then Obama was elected and instantly awarded with the Nobel prize. Why not? Everyone likes him. I like him. Obama makes us forget that he spied on our leaders, that he abandoned a shattered Iraq leading to ISIS and the refugee crisis. He makes us forget that the US is still an empire with vassals in the form of friendly dictatorships, and that it fully supports maniacs like Bibbi. Then the annexation of Crimea happened and got the kind of critique the Iraq war should have had. The red scare is back and we all flock to the US for protection while not even beloved American patriot and war criminal Henry Kissinger can convince the west to be more careful when provoking and economically destabilizing the nation with the world's largest nuclear weapon stockpile. Is America under Trump different? What I'm asking is are European politicians going to kiss Trump's rear end while paying him for protection, only complaining meekly if he decides to nuke Iran or put missile silos in Ukraine? This is of course assuming we don't elect our own Trumps and join in on the slaughter.

The trans-Atlantic alliance will survive if that's the question you're asking. Europe's been pivoting to the right too.

Certainly a lot of the international respect and goodwill rebuilt by the Clinton and Kerry State Departments under Obama is getting thrown in the dumpster and set on fire as we speak; already Trump future administration officials are reaching out to foreign powers to reassure them that basically everything he said on the campaign trail was hot air, which won't sit well with anyone at all. It's going to be like the Bush years except probably worse. But America won't become an international pariah, especially as the right-wing wave continues to wash across Europe.

Don't forget that US allies poo poo bricks whenever it's even suggested that the US might not come to their aid if Russia/China attacks. Not even the Iraq War changed that and I'm not convinced Trump has any plans to invade anywhere the way that Bush II did when he took office.

Ironically, any European trying to criticize the United States for electing a demagogue in 2016 is going to need a Trump-strength reality distortion field to avoid the fact that half of Europe has elected populists to their head of state in the past 5 years. At least off the top of my head, for both left and right wing populists, but mostly right wing, we have Spain, Italy, Greece, UK (kind of), Hungary, Poland, Switzerland (kind of), Austria (neck-and-neck, we'll see how the re-re-revote goes), Finland, and Norway. France is about to have a harrowing showdown between Madame Trump and whoever the old guard can throw up, and Merkel is going to get trampled next year too. Fortunately, when you hear anyone say something along the lines of what people said when Bush was president, you can know to not waste your time trying to deal with them, as they're hopelessly unaware of their own surroundings.

The problem is they are fascists.

If this election gives you a new reason to hate America, it should be that a large section of the liberal establishment and their followers think that anti-trump political action would be unreasonable, and that instead we should "compromise", "seek to build understanding" and other 1930s SPD horseshit. I fully expected this because as far as white american liberals are concerned fascism just means they'll get the front seats of the bus reserved for them again.

The SPD in the 30s after its losses actually did simplify its message and worked to improve its street presence- they adopted a symbol, even, three arrows! What happened is that by that time the party institutions were in free fall. Papen went in and basically ousted the last SPD governmental stronghold and the Reichsbanner(the SPD paramilitary) did nothing so the SPD became discredited.

Most of the nationalist/populist leaders elected recently in the Americas and Europe are also fascists so I guess they're going to be conflated terms soon enough if they aren't already.
