The commentators seemed to be saying that allowing an easy draw was a tactical decision on Magnus's part, which makes no sense to me. Surely it's worth at least trying to win?

I'm really disappointed it has come to this. World champion should be chosen with long games, rapid and blitz are for funsies. I will even more disappointed if it comes down to Armageddon and that game draws.

Carlsen said straight after the game that he wanted a draw because he liked the odds of tiebreakers better than taking chances in a single game.

That's a very strange idea. That's like saying "let's knock out overtime before we play the game in case we need overtime".

Didn't wc matches used to be "the current champion wins ties"? Kinda like that except you play a quick set of rapids to determine who gets the advantage.

I'm not sure how I feel about giving one player draw odds from the start of the tournament. It used to be how the match was organized (champion retained with a draw), and they got rid of it for a reason.

Each player gets a set of 10 constructed puzzles. The player who solves the most correctly wins the championship.

The tie-break should be chess boxing. If they can't prove their superiority at chess, they should settle it in the octagon.

edit: or real shoot-outs, none of that penalty garbage.

Yes, until 2006 when chess finally got over themselves and reunified the title, meaning the two split title holders (Topalov and Kramnik) couldn't draw to retain the title.

In a general sense, time controls are somewhat arbitrary and all hyperbole aside, having quicker time controls as the tiebreak seems fine. I mean who here cared that even the classical time controls were adjusted from 120+60+20 to 100+50+15 this year? Additionally, Rapid time controls aren't even that bad. It's a good sweet spot to allow deep-enough strategy while pushing the players tactically forward, and is better for spectators as there are no 30-minute think tanks where commentators have to fill the time talking about nonsense, but not so fast that it's just a blur of running play-by-play commentary and computer evals (which when done correct may be even better for spectators but I digress).

The Globe gave its sports cover story to the match. It was... well it was something alright:

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/more-sports/kelly-magnus-carlsen-and-sergey-karjakin-face-chess-armageddon/article33097418/

quote:

Whether you care about this game or not, it is a storyline that cannot be resisted, and one that Russia will fold into its agitprop.

The players themselves have been careful to keep things cordial, garlanding each other in bland compliments. Maybe the rhetorical dam will break once the event ends, however that may be.

After Monday’s desultory draw, Karjakin said, “Let’s hope there won’t be Armageddon.”

Yes. Let’s hope that.

I am confident that I could lose either side of that position.

Now that pieces have cleared, I think I prefer black a bit though I don't know if the pressure against a4 is better than the weakness on e6.

e: and now everything comes off. This would be a more interesting position with the colours switched.

I think this position seems pretty equal right now, but Magnus is very up on time. Position is probably too simple to really win, though.

Also given that chess games can end in draws it doesn't really make a decisive result any more likely.

Carlsen still needs to prove the win. I mean, he should win this, but he still needs to create how he will actually, technically win.
