Pennywise the Frown posted:I got the mailer today and they have a deal on a Roomba which I'd love to have. Problem is my floor is littered with stuff. Backpacks, boots, tents, guns, targets, rockets, etc. It takes a bit but once you get it set up and in the habit of keeping stuff off the floor it's a great timesaver. You still have to do occasional vacuuming/cleaning and such, but it's great for maintenance cleaning. As a plus it motivates you to keep your floor clear of crap too!

priznat posted:I have been thinking of a Roomba type robovac too, do they navigate between rooms or do you gotta move them? Our LR is two steps down so would have to shunt it around a bit. Roomba specifically uses some kind of random pathing and bounces erratically around. The first time it runs might be frustrating, because it will leave some patches completely uncovered even while going over the same area multiple times. However, over the long term (as in it runs every day) it will cover just about everything. They deliberately programmed in some kind of random walk function, because all sorts of problems resulted when they tried having it plot the room it's in and map out obstacles. So to answer your question, ours does a pretty good job covering four-five rooms of mixed hardwood/rug flooring, and often makes it all the way to the kitchen where it has to go through at least two "doorways" to get there. Depending on your floor layout you probably want to put it as close to center as you can, but it should do a decent job most of the time.

priznat posted:Simply Purrfect sucks. I tried pretty much everything and the best one I have found is “worlds best cat litter”. It’s a bit more spendy but it is drat effective at keeping smells down. I'm typically extremely suspicious of anything that tries to label itself "World's Best" but World's Best Cat Litter is true to form. It's way better for cats than the typical bentonite clay stuff too. It doesn't clump quiiite as well, but the cheap stuff is basically concrete mix so I'm not surprised. It still does the job well enough, and smells worlds better besides which is the more important thing to me.

We get so many we just sit outside, there's no way we'd get anything done if we answered knocks (also our street is so full of candy some kids don't even go if they have to walk up stairs). Several kids were literally bent over from the weight of candy they were hauling - teenagers, even. This was a light year because of the cold. Halloween is great. I should get full size bars for next year

One of the cooler ideas I heard for halloween was glow bracelets, you can get a pack of 100 for $10 (Though I'm not sure if that was at Costco or just online)

Bummey posted:I need a new vacuum. How is it? My shark Navigator is fantastic, really well designed and functional, light and powerful. I love that i can detach the brushes to make a portable hand unit or unplug the handle for a wand and that the dust canister opens from top AND bottom. My only complaint is that the attachments are kind of inconveniently in the way on the handle and easy to knock off but I set them aside anyway so the unit is even lighter. Really easy to vacuum the stairs with it. I highly recommend them E: oh you already got one

I would like to reduce or preferably eliminate using a wire hanger to unclog the lines after several uses. Two dogs, two cats, relatively large house: it's a beast and hasn't clogged in six years. Granted mine are all relatively short haired and we have a room a going most days but it's been a champ. It's easy to move around too

astral posted:The idea is that an ionizer charges some really small particles in a way that they're more likely to stick to your walls, floor, furniture, etc. instead of staying in the air. Unfortunately, ionizers also produce small quantities of ozone, which is (at minimum) a lung irritant. Also ions will tend to react with other molecules. If you're a virus or bacterium, it's pretty nasty to have a bunch of your electrons stripped off (or a bunch added on) which tends to kill them off. UV light and Ozone are great examples of the disinfecting properties of ionization. It will damage your cells the same way, but it's insignificant because we have so many more cells as backup to replace any that get damaged. Unless you get a massive dose, at least.

Because it needs a blade guard it's harder for the cutting edge to get closer, so going in a little circle maximizes the chance you can get a hair to stand up

Paul MaudDib posted:My 10 year old shark navigator vacuum seems to have clogged for good this time, I can’t get it to run right. Possibly needs new filters but I’ve tried that, and the vacuum head seems clean (including the tube leading up to the vacuum). Our navigator had a bunch of problems recently too but I was able to diagnose them. It started when it started sounding weird, like loud rushing air noises and had weak suction and the motor was getting really hot. Turned out there's a pressure release valve (rushing air noise) and the motor was overheating because it was fighting a half dozen clogs. Here's what I fixed:
Considering it's over 10 years old at this point it was due for a bit of servicing and it's back to pulling out stuff I'd never guess was there. No judgment if you just want a new vacuum though
