They've done Kentucky and Tennessee. Currently the Kirkland bourbon is Tennessee. It's almost certainly sourced from George Dickle barrels. They're really the only Tennessee distillery that can supply the volume Costco demands. I expect there's quite a bit of flavor drift over time as their blender, Tennessee Distilling Ltd, desperately tries to put out as somewhat consistent product with inconsistent barrels.


(Sorry ahead of time for trying to explain how these blends happen if you already understand.)

It's not George Dickle in an even cheaper bottle. GD, like most big whiskey distilleries, sell off barrels that don't fit the flavor profile of their name brand product. For whatever reason those barrels just didn't mature to hit the right flavor notes so instead of dumping them out they get sold off to blenders like the folks that supply Costco.

It's so good drat annoying. I once saw a really nice "bar pizza" posted and some big dick award winning NYC pizza restaurant chef came into the thread being all like "there's way too much cheese, too much sauce, the crust is too thin and it's overcooked for NY Style Pizza." Like, no poo poo, it's not NY pizza, it's tavern style you rear end in a top hat, and it's an absolutely flawless example of the style.

If you've ever wonder why the hell tonic water and club soda are so expensive, they cost like 8 times as much labor dollars to fill a bottle as Mt Dew. It's literally cheaper to pump tap water into bottles. (**Literally** literally, even though water bottles get treated with ozone, UV and pumped with liquid nitrogen.)

Club soda is the single hardest thing to bottle yet it has the simplest ingredient list. When you saw that on the schedule you'd know the you were about to work a 16 hour shift. Every time, without fail.

I can say for certain, but it's probably the baking soda. Plain carbonated water (H2Oh!) wasn't as big of a problem. Sugar free soda does erupt from the bottles a lot faster than sugared soda.

They built a 450 million dollar chicken plant, like they did for hotdogs, to save like $0.35 a bird. They own the birds and the feed mill, and contract farmers to raise them. They also had an issue where birds on the market were getting too large, which would force them to raise the price and they wouldn't fit in the rotisseries. Costco sells 6lb birds and they were having problems sourcing them because the industry is raising 7-8lb birds to be cut up for sale. Only 15% of chickens are sold whole.

Don't put greasy paper in the recycling bin. You can probably put it in the organics bin if you've got that. Delivery pizza boxes go in the trash or organics. Frozen pizza boxes, like all plastic or waxed coated paper containers, go in the trash.

It's a good idea to research what is accepted for recycling locally. When you put stuff like plastic bags, plastic wrap, and pizza boxes in the recycling, you're paying somebody to sort it out later. Many locations only recycle #1 and #2 plastics. My county also accepts #5.

I really hate how much plastic wrap Costco uses. None of that stuff is recyclable.

An instant pot or knockoff is really handy if you don't have one already. If you get the name brand you can get rid of the slow cooker if you have one. Kitchenaid mixers are cheaper at Costco.

I know you said nothing electrical, but led lighting for your garage is awesome if you've got an older, dim garage. You can mount them and get an electrician to look your install over and make the final connection.

Get some garage shelving from Costco so you can nab stuff like kleenex/tp/paper towels/laundry detergent/etc when they're on sale. It's like a chest freezer for sundries: when you have storage space you can buy stuff when it's on sale instead of waiting until you run out to buy more. If your yearly supply of garbage bags has 2 months left and they go on sale why not resupply if you've got the space?

Get a fire extinguisher large enough to match your new range! Get a pack or two of smoke/carbon monoxide detectors if your new place is more than 10 years old or don't have an install date sticker. They're only good for ~10 years. Modern units have a 10 year battery so you don't have to swap 9v batteries every 6 months when you reset your clocks for daylight savings. 1 detector inside each bedroom door, 1 in a kitchen'ish area, minimum.

I keep my eyes peeled for old box fans at garage sales. I repaired mine a few times but it eventually gave up the ghost.

Box fans are great for windows, but commercial grade fans really get the air moving. I picked up a broken Dayton and repaired it and the thing is an absolute beast. It doesn't move as much air as a box fan but it's much higher velocity air. Great for projecting a blast from a distance. Usually keep it in the garage pointed at my work space.

It's really easy to just peel it yourself rather than relying on Chinese slave/prison/genocide labor to peel it for you. Not trying to get all CSPAM up in here, but the stuff comes from a pretty disgusting source.

If you aren't comfortable smashing with a knife use a bench scraper. If you don't have a bench scraper (why not?) just squish it with the meat of your palm.

Costco bagged garlic is kind of lovely, really. They brag about the high Brix, aka sugar. That makes it burn fast. Some onion+garlic recipes have you start the garlic in the pan first: not a good idea with the high-sugar Costco garlic. You really want to sweat the onions with some salt and oil before adding Costco garlic.

In the US it was a sugar free soda that didn't taste sugar free (I think the ginseng helped cover it up, plus one of the ingredients used overseas was illegal in the US for a long time) and had double the caffeine at 69mg per 12oz can. It's called Pepsi Zero Sugar now.

The overseas versions are sweetened with aspartame and acesulfame potassium and I think that's where the Max branding came from. They have different flavoring compared to the US version, from what I understand, and a typically low caffeine level.

Y'all just need to buy The Food Lab. It's not a book of recipes, it teaches you the how's and why's of making good food. I don't know if Costco still carries it in the book piles. I wish I had picked it up when I saw it at Costco instead of so much later. I was too slow for the recommendation for the meatloaf recommendation yesterday. It's often cheap on amazon. The ebook version sucks on an e-paper display: it might work on a Fire but it's garbage on a Kindle because the technique photos don't translate.

Use more spices, unless you're a "salt and pepper is spicy Midwesterner." Kenji is one of those guys that's like "1 tsp spice" and you watch him on video dumping in a tablespoon or two. It's from his "american test kitchen" experience neutering spices down to the cornbread white man levels that ATK required.


Side note: my local library system has 24 paper copies of The Food Lab and 8 ebook copies. Obtaining a library card is really, really loving easy, yo.

Pink Lady is by far my favorite apple, and I'm spoiled for apple choices. It's more tart than the Fugi but still quite sweet. The peel is pretty tannic. I eat Pink Lady apples by slicing or peeling them rather than biting in and don't usually eat all of the skin. Heads up if you normally chomp into an apple: it might not be the apple for you. It can be kind of a pain to bring a paring knife to work. Mandarins might make a better snack if you aren't one of the guys that regularly carries and cleans a pocket knife. Great snack at home though.

If you buy a juicing machine you'll want Fugis rather than Pink Ladies. Fugi juices better, plus that tannic skin with those Ladies... I meanmaybe you're into it, I guess, but tannins are usually a cider-guy thing. Costco often has Gala which is ok for juicing. Not as much flavor though.

I try all the new apples I see but they're basically all Honeycrisp X Cheaper-to-harvest or Honeycrisp X Sweeter or Honeycrisp X Warehouses Longer apples nowadays. Honeycrisp was better when it was licensed to be grown in appropriate climates for quality reasons. Now anybody can grow it anywhere they want and cross it to tailor it for marketing reasons. Those "marketing reasons" are often to lower producer's costs. The price premium for Honeycrisp these days is because of how hard it is to harvest. They tend to be a bit more tart than Fugi, but noticeably less than Pink Lady.

Pink Lady is a trademarked name for Cripps Pink, so if you see Cripps Pink it's usually pretty similar to Pink Lady. The TM owners set certain standards for the apples. I don't run across disappointing Cripps Pink apples as often as poorly grown Honeycrisps, but I don't often see Cripps and don't often buy Honeycrisp.

Cloudy days are super deceptive. Visible light gets blocked, but over 90% of UV passes through. I learned pretty quickly that I needed sunscreen for gym period even on cloudy days because a med I was taking made me lightly burn in less than an hour of mid-day exposure.

If you're like me you probably don't need to worry about buying special UV blocking shirts. Tight sunsleeves should help your sweat evaporate better and cool you town.

Basically Bernatellos, a high-volume local pizza maker, fuckin owns and 3/5 of their brands on both the low ($2.50/ea) and high end ($7.50/ea) command respect. Jack’s by Kraft is thrown in there because it’s solid and likely a regional brand. Kirkland Frozen might be a good choice if u live in a frozen pizza wasteland.

Real 'Za, another Bernatello's, was a really good frozen pizza when it was around. It was one of those dumb "natural" brands, but super tasty. It tasted like what you remembered frozen pizzas to be years ago before all of the companies started pinching pennies and making worse and worse quality pizzas.

Yup, and they can check the stock at other stores in your area too. It's a good idea to ask in case they're low on stock and could sell out before you arrive. There were only like 3 in stock when I bought a TV from my local Costco, but I knew another nearby store would had more, as a backup. Electronics can sell out in a heartbeat.
