Heretic here, but I just returned from the local Restaurant Depot, which had meat stacked to the ceiling. Quite a contrast to my last trip to the church, or the grocery. It's worth checking out while they're open to the general public.

If you have freezer space, buy a vacuum sealer and hit your local restaurant wholesaler. There is still a cornucopia of meats out there if you're willing to buy 25 pounds at a time.

Anyone have anything to say about the Kirkland motor oil, specifically the full synthetic 0w20? I saw that they got the memo about the 5 quart jugs, and it's quite competitively priced.

Anyone know if they are still letting in pubs

Yes as of two weeks ago.

I also went to the brand new Business Center, and I see no need to drive to the RD ever again. Costco has the advantage when it comes to 55 gallon drums of olive oil.

Also, I've been checking costco.com for a 7cbft chest freezer for a few weeks. They have a few that come in stock, then disappear an hour later. I finally snagged one, should be here on Thursday. The food saver is on sale starting this week too, which works perfectly. My next trip is going to be 90% frozen and meats as we fill that thing up.

Just posting to say I hate this poster for planting the seed.

Soon I will have all of the meats.

My Koolatron 7 cu ft arrived dented. After hearing the stories from my friend who worked for brown, and seeing the packaging on this, I do not wonder why.

Keeps cool, though, so I'm gonna keep it.

Next I must return to the Business Center for commercial quantities of meat.

I had to take delivery of 3 freezers before I got one that didn’t look like the one you posted, so good on you. The manu (not Costco) should at minimum knock a token amount off, at least that’s what GE offered me. I held out for my kids being the only ones who can kick dent my freezer

Was this in the before time? Availability is a problem, that's the reason why I overpaid for this. I wouldn't exactly say I'm happy with it being dented, it's just that the whole idea behind buying this thing was filling it with ~10 weeks worth of food so that I can avoid standing in line unnecessarily, because the world has gone insane. And it looks like it's sufficient for that.

I'm going to do a run to the business center next week and buy a 50lb box of chicken breasts. My intent is to break them into 5lb vacuum packs to store in that chest freezer.

My question is this: I am considering buying a sous vide setup. Is 5lb at a time in one bag plausible for that Anova starter kit? I have hilarious calorie requirements in season.

Skinnymansbeerbelly
Mar 31, 2010
I bought and broke down the 40 lb box of chicken last night. It took forever to vacuum pack it because I couldn't keep the chicken at slushy cold during packing, which meant that there were a bunch of failed seals and double bagging. Anyone got any tips?

Skinnymansbeerbelly
Mar 31, 2010
About how long do you re-freeze?

I'm also thinking some kind of receptacle to hold the bags while packing would help avoiding getting chicken juice errywhere.

Skinnymansbeerbelly
Mar 31, 2010
I tried the paper towel, it was still just too juicy. I think the suggested 1-2 hours in the freezer before sealing just doesn't cut it when it's 40 lbs, I think it needs to be more like 3-4 hours, or more.

Skinnymansbeerbelly
Mar 31, 2010
OK, but how long do you have it set in in the freezer, unportioned, beforehand?

Skinnymansbeerbelly
Mar 31, 2010
I want to buy a bunch of something like these except more like 10-12" tall, so I can fold the bag into it like a trash can and then bag everything with a quickness.

Good thing I got two months to prepare for next time!

Around here they have started installing occupancy indicator lights mounted on the support columns for the overhang, so that you don't have to wait for the gigantic SUV at the rear pump to move to see what's going on up front.

The doddering fools ignore it, so it's the same as before.

I've never found Costco soda prices to be very good unless you're always buying it at the regular price in other stores. At my local grocery store (Safeway) Coke/Pepsi products have big sales all the time and it brings the price per can much lower than Costco, so I just wait and then buy a few packs.

Have you bought a 12 pack from the grocery store in the last year? Because I haven't seen Pepsi or Coke at any grocery store for less than $5/12 since last easter, even Shasta is up to $3.

Skinnymansbeerbelly
Mar 31, 2010
I think I must live in a test market for Coke, because I haven't seen Vanilla or 12 packs go on sale in over a year, which makes the 'co flat compelling. And I have been looking, Winco, Safeway, the supermercado, everywhere. It's enough to drive a goon to Shasta.

I celebrated when the Costco Business Center opened up last year, because it meant that I no longer had to drive all the way to Restaurant Row for bulk goods.

But first it was the bleach, then the taquitos, then the protein bars, and now the ice cream: it seems that Costco is slowly shifting what I can only assume are my favorite lower margin items to be only available at the BC, to make room for more impulse buy crap at the main.

And they don't have booze or pet supplies at the BC, so I can't do a one stop shop there. It sucks and I hate it.

It's also stupid that there's no way to complete a transaction for a car battery without getting a manager out for key service.

Skinnymansbeerbelly

I finally got a chance to use the self-serve Nitrogen to top off the tires. No bullshit quarters or bugging the attendant, and no gauge to watch. Just set the pressure, and it's off to the races. A+ would fill again.

If you have the ability to haul by yourself, appliances should be done in-person, because the price with "free shipping" is often ~$80 higher than in-store.

e: I made my second ever Costco return because I didn't know beforehand.

Googled this because it sounded wonky, and wow: having the app to control your whatsit being banned by the commerce department because of Ukraine-related sanctions is cyberpunk future as gently caress.
