You want a chill fish to snorkel with? The blue groper (actually a wrasse) will be your best friend. Dopey in the best possible way, they're just curious and will follow you wherever you go. People are dicks and they're on a prohibited fishing list because spearfishers keep killing them. There's no sport in killing one of these poor dudes. If you miss, it'll just stare at you.

Goby are fish that often inhabit burrows. Sometimes, these burrows are also home to shrimp. The shrimp and the goby live together as best friends and its the most adorable thing ever.

This was going to be my post too. I used to have a goby + pistol shrimp pair when I had an aquarium and they were inseparable. Different animals working together is always the cutest thing.

My next favorite that I owned (but not my pic) was a fairy wrasse like this one:

They are kind of weird because they sleep in some kind of mucus cocoon at night. Mine spent most of his day time hiding in the rocks when he wasn't being chased away from the shrimp hole by the goby.

I like all sorts of deep sea fish but angler fish are my favorite. All the ones you see are female. The males are tiny and only useful for biting into the female's flesh and atrophying into a sperm sac linked to her circulatory system. Scientists didn't know wtf the "growths" were at first. Truly the superior species.

Moray eels are powerful predators that lurk in the darkness, waiting to pounce on unsuspecting fish and tear them apart. Their large size and hunting habits make them seem imposing, up until you get a good look at them and see how goofy their faces are.

They are actually super shy and only attack people out of either self-defense or clumsy mistakes. Some have even shown extreme affection towards divers they encounter regularly, coming out of their burrows to swim and play with them. A bunch of misunderstood goof balls.

I got to see one at the Shedd Aquarium come swimming out in their big center reef tank and this is 100% true. Their body mostly hangs vertically and it's like a big doofy ribbon.

You can take a backstage tour at Shedd and a couple years ago there was a huge piraiba catfish who was kept separated because he kept eating the other fish in the tanks. The guide tapped the side and he came right on up to the surface like a friendly dog (that would eat your whole arm given the chance).

SUNFISH ARE THE BEST loving FISH.

They are derpy all the goddamn time and have a sympatric (?) relationship with seabirds because they sun themselves on the surface and birds eat worms out of their skin.

AND THEY ARE ALSO BABY WHEELS https://youtu.be/r0IQCLQDfKw (probably NSFW without headphones and also I don't have brackets on my phone keyboard, sorry.)

The word you're looking for is mutualistic. Mutalism is when two species have a relationship where both parties benefit. In this case, the sunfish is cleaned of parasites while the birds get a meal.

Which reminds me of another cool fish, the cleaner wrasse!

These little guys also perform cleaning duties for tons of fish. Huge predatory fish will let the cleaner wrasse swim through their mouth and gills unharmed. The benefit of having the wrasse pick out parasites is so important that these fish have learned to let them go unharmed. The relationship works so well that its completely ingrained in the wrasse's instinct. The cleaner wrasse will even try to clean a divers mouth if they open it at one of their cleaning stations.
