i dunno if people are ever serious when they propose migrating to mars or whatever, because its hard to tell when people are serious about anything nowadays, but even if you start a nuclear war, have runaway global warming, a pandemic and a meteor strike, all at the same time, the earth will still be far more habitable than the surface of mars will ever be

if someone proposed colonizing antarctica the way some people talk about space (it has abundant water resources! breathable air! raw materials can be drilled from beneath the surface and shipped back for profit!) theyd be laughed out of the room but somehow people take the elon musk space poo poo seriously

Manager Hoyden posted:Every time I see someone use those weird political abbreviations/contractions I feel a massive amount of secondhand embarrassment. Like "proglib" or "tradcath". I know it was a twitter garbagebaby thing for a while but now it's slipping into actual (bad) articles from reputable sources. What the hell is "tradcath"? Shibawanko posted:yeah i hate that poo poo too. "cool and good" too "Cool and good" is weirdly redundant, and it has grown less and less clever the more it has been used, just like every other catchphrase. Did it originate here? Because I don't remember seeing it anywhere else. My unpopular opinion is that I have a soft spot for catchphrases in general, which I think is because I like stuff that reflects the SA community, which I have spent almost half my life with. Shibawanko posted:im not a fan of "poc" or "woc" either because they both sound like twitter words and are phonetically unattractive PoC/POC and WoC/WOC are better, in my opinion. That way it's more obvious that it shouldn't be pronounced like "pock"/"wock".

It's like when people say we'll get through Brexit because "we" survived the Blitz. Ignoring that quite a lot of people didn't in fact survive the Blitz and were blown up in their homes. Or the "we never had all these allergies and things when I was a child." No, you just had children dying without explanation because bread was literally poison to them.

Appeals to "be kind" or twee, didactic infographics with pastel backdrops and little clouds and rainbows are activism entirely for the benefit and reach of the social media users who use them, and their hectoring but cutesy tone is an anathema to many viewers who will at best disengage and at worst react in opposition. It's okay to be angry and/or anxious about injustice and the cosy aesthetics of lovely illustrations of people drinking tea cross legged on the floor feels tone deaf right now.

LotR, and more so the Silmarillion, is about how god planned for you to suffer to fulfil his plan. Mysterious ways. Tolkien was very much into the idea that suffering made you noble, because he was an orphan who fought in WW1.

Amy Winehouse was overrated. "Rehab" would have been a novelty one-hit-wonder if she wasn't living a tough life in the public eye. She was talented and her death is tragic, but it cemented a legacy because she never had to do a follow-up that people would have ignored or disliked.
