Against leaving Europe. That's enough for now since the by-election isn't changing who's in government.
The man on the joint Tory-UKIP ticket lost, and I for one am glad there's one less swivel-eyed Brexiter in parliament.

So lib dems won on Brexit you say? This is my hot take on it -

In Tory strongholds, Labour should back off. Let the lib dems fight tories on brexit. They'll lose since the dyed-in-the-wool Tory voters want brexit anyway, but there's a big glut of middle class floaters who would switch to an anti brexit party.
In the working class areas Labour has previously lost they can campaign on poo poo that isn't brexit. They have to mention it, but let the focus of the campaign be jobs, houses, hospitals and schools.

Come election time, rely on tory votes in middle class areas turning yellow, and labour retaking places that have gone a bit UKIP. Labour win a majority, or minority government + lib dem sup and confidence.

Labour sacrifice some sort of brexit vote/rereferrendum to the lib dems in return for support on a pile of good policy. By this point brexit is hurting enough that people vote smartly.

Society is saved, the tories are banished to the shadow realm, the lib dems become the new, slightly less awful opposition.

Also at this point the Lib Dems are basically a single issue pro-EU party. I couldn't tell you a single one of their other positions. That might work in Richmond Park where 70% of people voted Remain but it's probably not a great plan for countrywide electoral success.

There's a telling point in the BBC article about the result where Olney says that she'll vote against triggered Article 50, only for the BBC to point out that this won't actually matter.

The Lib Dems just won an election on the strength of opposing it. It's worth opposing it if only to try to lessen the effects of a hard Brexit.

'Stop moaning' is the language of UKIP. Amusing how quickly Labour's endorsement of the process has adjusted your attitude towards it.

It's the only plan. If the LibDems can pick up votes from pro-Remain Tories, and left-wingers can overcome their nausea and memories of 2010 enough to vote for the swine, the Tories could lose a lot of seats to the LibDems that Labour have never had a hope of winning (see: the south west). That is how Labour got majorities before. But I don't think it will happen unless Labour makes some at least semi-official deal with the LibDems, because the nausea is strong.

Well, it is good Goldsmith lost. It is bad that idiots put faith in the liberals again but I guess it is just a by-election and people wanted to make a point on Brexit. Still, a Liberal won & that's bad. It slows down the dream of their gradual annihilation.

And obviously my prediction was horrifically wrong, which is the real reason I'm sad at seeing the Liberal elected.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm, I wonder what the context could have been to cause Labour to revel in the defeat of Liberals in 1983. Could it because because of the whole SDP split I wonder?

But no, of course Labour members were just overjoyed for the Tories to win, context is for mugs.

The Lib Dems just won an election in an area where Remain won on the strength of opposing Brexit. A lot of Labour territory didn't vote so overwhelmingly for Remain. You know this.

That said, yes, Labour should be doing more publicly to oppose Brexit because Brexit will be a loving car crash that will do short, medium & long term damage to the UK.
