Sarsapariller posted:As one would expect, it is stupid: orbital markers are fixed relative to everything in space, but not to the planet. So if you go to OM-1 it is always going to be in the same relative to all the other OM's and any space stations and asteroid fields, but there is no way to know what part of the planet is currently rotating under it. When you warp to an OM you enter a little bubble of space where you have the same velocity as it, which is zero relative to the 0,0,0 start position, because nothing in space actually orbits. As soon as you get close to the planet, you suddenly match velocities with the planet's rotation and the OM will rocket off at several hundred meters/sec. Ah I keep confusing orbit with rotation which sounds like it was done, even if poorly. Personally, if it were up to me planets/moons/static locations would be basically stationary; because this was at one point going to be an MMO and there are bigger fish to fry than re-creating David Braben's universe simulation. But I'm not opposed to CIG spending another 6 months tripping over themselves trying to copy day1 features of Elite Dangerous.

Maybe they should just get the developers to put a giant Chris Roberts into the centre of the game, and then everything in the universe will naturally begin to rotate around him. Because he's really, really loving dense.

But I'm not opposed to CIG spending another 6 months tripping over themselves trying to copy day1 features of Elite Dangerous. I mean if you're doing a space game with physical planetary surfaces with gravity, Elite's probably the model you want to emulate since they have done it more-or-less flawlessly. Coming off of a stagnant tech base that 10 years ago was basically entirely about mapping assets to 2D planar surfaces, it is pretty incredible what various teams have done to incorporate differing frames of reference. Star Citizen's definitely an act with a splash zone and it's best to be well outside it

Question about this streamer guy Rex - does he and his crew ever run upon other players? Like just randos that happen to be in the same place? Is it weirder if they do or don't?

Ah, I see you are mistaking Store Citizer for an actual game The server cap is 50, across the entire trillion-billion square km map, so running across other players at all is very unlikely. Doubly so when you have 50 people in your org all joining the server at once. Which is pretty much impossible for us mere mortals, by the way- the first guy to log in will always be loaded into the nearest almost-full server so it's next to impossible to get even 4 or 5 people into the same one, much less Rex's entire crew. It is almost as if someone spins up empty servers just for him to join.

They do kill people who aren’t identified players in the LARP when encountered. They’re pretty serious about protecting the mission from “hostiles.” TBH he’s a great stream sniper target, so why not.
