They could just as easily fail to cobble together some fake, scripted demo and talk about some Discord knock-off for over an hour during their annual namesake convention (for a game still in alpha). Backers would still fork over cash, of course.

Fun fact: While trying to learn about modding Stellaris, I found at least 3 mods on the Steam Workshop which all add in 1 system each from the Star Citizen lore into Stellaris. That means Stellaris now has at least 3 times as many Star Citizen systems implemented as Star Citizen does. This amuses me greatly.

Milky Moor posted:SC2 made money, sure. But lots of bad things make heaps of money. I'd be curious to see the sales numbers for Wings of Liberty VS Heart of the Swarm VS Legacy of the Void. Yeah, Blizzard is a very odd bird in the whole gaming market. They own some of the most recognised and successful IP:s ever to the point where they've essentially invented a couple of national sports that draws six-digit arena crowds (and eight-digit viewerships). It's kind of funny that when citizens point to, say, SC2 and the time and money that went into making that compared to how much CIG has spent, they kind of have a (very confused) point: for Blizzard, the time and cost of Star Citizen qualify as a “hobby R&D” expenditure. But that's because, whatever they put on the market will make money. Lots of it. They have the customer base that rivals the population of middle-to-large countries and they actually take time to try to figure out what all those people want and how to hone that gameplay. Even the “unpolished” and “disliked” SC2 is leagues beyond what most games can afford simply because Blizzard not only can but must afford it, or their numbers won't add up. It's just that, when you're operating on their level, a “failure” is a game that only sells kajillions of copies — to be a success, it has to be in the umptygazillion range and make at least one more industrial nation completely beholden to the company. A game with 30 million + active players right now

That means Stellaris now has at least 3 times as many Star Citizen systems implemented as Star Citizen does. This amuses me greatly. This is fantastic. On the other hand, it's downright depressing, because the Star Citizen "lore" is complete and utter poo poo - it defines the absolute bottom of what lore can be. Literally any other game is a step up. Yet, people are latching onto it and importing it into other games. Possible reasons include: 1) They actually like the lore (this is not likely, even for Citizens) 2) They want to play Star Citizen so badly they're building it themselves with other games (more likely) 3) It's a form of magical thinking - if they talk about Star Citizen as often as possible, and bring it into other games, and it shows up everywhere, that "makes it real" and now Star Citizen will become a real thing. (This is almost certainly it.)

Any time I hear the Star Citizen/StarCraft 2 comparison, I'm reminded of this old Penny Arcade comic from 2001. It's perhaps even more true today than it was at the time - Blizzard can say they're making whatever they want and there's a reasonable assumption that it will be A Good Game, even if it's not to your personal tastes. They've proven that they absolutely will do everything they can to avoid putting out a shitheap, and on the rare occasion that they do (looking at you, Diablo 3) you can pretty much be guaranteed they're going to fix it. The thing Citizens do not and will never understand is that Blizzard can afford to take 7 years to "make a carbon copy of their old RTS" because they have a reputation built on doing exactly that, and because they have more money than God. CIG have a lot of money, yes, but not "we make a new hat for WoW every week that sells 7 million times by Friday" money, and they have NO reputation.

Star Marine is absolutely the laggiest, jankiest, shittiest first person shooter I have played in recent memory. I've played Steam Early Access dinosaur shooters that felt smoother and easier to play than SM. I cannot overstate how loving horrible the skipping, jittering, and controls are in Star Marine. It is absolute garbage, and CIG should be ashamed of themselves for even considering releasing it to "the public." If you go watch any of WTFO's old streams you'll see that it's impossible to aim because if your target isn't running straight at you the commando you're trying to shoot skitters wildly across the screen every single time. e: and WTFO has a way nicer gaming PC than I do.
