Let's all remember that only about $2m came from kickstarter. Everything else was CIG's own website.

Nice catch. Chris does this a lot but don't have any good examples on hand. His ability to weave between present and future tense probably has something to do with it.

doingitwrong posted:

One of my favourite Chris techniques is his free switching between the present and future tense. It helps build the illusion that the things he is promising are real and have already happened which is how you get backers who think that the terrible flight model is just an badly tuned but physically perfect promised flight model.

quote:

The way it works is that the persistent universe server, which we’re calling the Galaxy Server, keeps track of all players’ assets, group relationships and locations inside the Star Citizen universe. As the Galaxy server isn’t handling any realtime action it can handle our complete player base, which right now would be about 45,000 players, but is designed to be able to scale to millions if need be. The other key thing the Galaxy Server does is dynamically place players based on their location, skill level, alignment and player versus player (PvP) preference into battle instances. Think of a “battle” instance like a Battlefield 3 multiplayer session or a World of Tanks Battle with the key difference that the selection of players is done transparently and is “in fiction”.

This is all written in the present tense. In 2012. Yet here we are in 2017 with netcode being a continually pushed back refactored promised thing that's coming in the future. While the game can't handle all that many people at once at all. Let alone 45k people. So it doesn't seem accurate to say that the Galaxy Server WAS designed in 2012. Because surely if it was, we'd see it implemented now.

Fidelity. Wait, was I'm working on again?

D_Smart posted:

Actually no, they didn't. Not at all. It's just the usual bullshit-laden lies that Shitizens tend to spout in order to give that poo poo stain Croberts, a pass for increasing the game's scope, while scamming gullible backers. Some backers, sensing the beginning of the end then started trotting out the "backers voted for the increased scope bullshit", while engaging in obfuscation and revisionist history.

In fact, as I wrote here to Batgirl about a year ago, that notion is patently false. The 11-03-2012 stretch goals poll, and the 07-17-2013 funding counter poll did no such thing. And even if it did, it was still up to Chris to know when to say no, or when to determine whether or not it could be done. But regardless, in Nov 2014, after raising $65M, the project scope was significantly increased, thus sealing its fate and dooming it to the failure it is now facing.

quote:

That’s the third time you’ve posted the same link to the same poll, disregarding points raised that the poll data doesn’t show any consensus or agreement in any of the options, since not even a simple majority agrees on any one option despite each participant being allowed to select 3 options. Members of the active SC community were given 3 votes each and still failed to put any of the options above 40% support, which suggests that there is no majority support from the community for any of the expansion options.

If anything, giving people 3 choices each instead of 1 should have made it easier for any one option to hit 50%, but that still didn’t happen. All this shows is that CIG polled the community and then promptly disregarded the results, opting to proceed with their own plan instead, and certainly doesn’t support your assertion that the changes were voted and agreed upon by the community.

None of this even matters - no entity has the right to bait-and-switch a consumer based on the "votes" of a "community" unless you agree to such terms explicitly in advance (such as the fetid shitholes known as "HOA"s.) Discussing whether or not it was a majority vote is valiantly missing the point. Polls cannot change the initial agreement between consumer and provider, regardless of their construction and regardless of their result.

Also, none of these except "Tactical command mode on capital ships" (I don't know what that means), and "Enhanced FPS mode", have anything to do with new mechanics. Those both sound like minor alterations to existing promises. The vast majority of "new mechanics" we've been seeing have nothing to do with any of those things.

The vote options have no relation to the current feature creep, the vote numbers are insignificant compared to even the 500,000 backer number, let alone the 1.5m number.

The community vote for feature expansion is total bullshit.

The tactical command mode was where your head whale would be on the bridge of a big capital ship, and would be able to issue orders to all ships in the fleet C&C style, to other players.

This was, I feel, a big turning stone because it was where "fleet action" became not only possible but something that it appeared that CIG were actively working on and fleshing out.

This was a birth of the mega whale, because they wanted to be that guy behind the huge campaigns, commanding it from an enormous ship surrounded by escorts, etc.

Unfortunately now though, years later, CIG can't even code a loving door to work, they can't get more than about 12 people on together in a very non-MMO type environment, so the chances of having this sort of thing in the game can very safely be said a solid 0% chance. :(

You only really need a discord to do bridge commander, so it's really undefined what that goal was even about. Enhanced FPS could just be a couple new weapon mechanics, which is what it pretty much explicitly says in the poll option.

The whole vote was basically, "Hey, want a little bit extra?" Not, "Let's fundamentally change everything!"
