Unsinkable

Sarsapariller posted:

Speaking as a person who loves flight sims- the more accurate they are, the less intuitive they tend to be. DCS F-14 probably comes with a 500 page manual. That's just how it has to be when you are literally trying to recreate the experience of flying a modern fighter right down to the fuel/air mixture and radio buttons. It can be really disconcerting the first time you take off in a WW2 fighter and your whole plane pitches to the left wildly until you die- then you spend an hour reading online and learn that they accurately modeled the engine torque and the airflow over the rudders on takeoff isn't enough to counteract it if you throttle up all the way. Usually if you are encountering a problem in DCS or IL-2 it will turn out not to be a bug but a limit in your understanding of the flight model.

Star Citizen tried to do this. Their boss said "Make it feel real" so they did stuff like physically modeling the input of each of the thrusters, and planning to have real inertia in flight, and fuel. But Star Citizen isn't a sim and it isn't based on real physics, so it's fundamentally compromised and nothing makes sense. They physically model the thrusters, but it turns out that sliding all over feels like poo poo so they made them equal in power to the actual main engine, and then they made them all perform automatically. They went like 100 steps out of the way to recreate what is essentially no-clip flight.

There's also a key step involved where Chris sort of made artwork and then said "make it realistic!" without actually understanding that future space ships look super cool but are actually not very practical and physics friendly.

Also they failed to invest in this area, and ended up, supposedly, turning all values to super high levels so it didn't matter anyhow.

Further in the future, the guy who created the physics system left cig earlier in the year, so the chances that it will be fixed are now very low. It will be "no clip action" and nothing will ever feel even half as good as something from Freespace.

But this is all ok because the ships look pretty. :chloe:

I get the feeling they're in the rapid deployment cycle towards MVP now. The groundwork is there - they can pump out ships and planets now, and horrifyingly bad "cities." That's it, and that's all there needs to be. Now just copy/paste and boom - universe complete.

At some point they might want to think about jamming a game in there, or making any of it work, and not just be a glimpse into Chris's mind (aka a joke).

Can I just reiterate how unbelievably stupid it is that the larger ships go faster than the smaller in QT? The real-life equivalent would be oil tankers zipping by racing boats and the like.
I can believe it entirely. You're seeing the evolution of moronic p2w game design in slow motion here.

In a fictional universe where Star Citizen had been intelligently developed, you probably wouldn't have the smallest ships even able to QT or use fast travel. Players would start with mid-sized ships capable of carrying other ships and use small ships launched from that ship.

But Star Citizen is developed to reward unbelievably stupid cash shop purchases, so newbie players are allowed only the tiniest crap. So you have to let them use all options available. That leaves you with a game with barely any content where you need to distinguish ships with means outside the "children ramming two shopping carts together" combat. Combat I think the developers would probably prefer you avoid.

Star Citizen has literally nothing beyond that, so there you go, we're watching p2w further ruin an already ruined project! Kind of beautiful, really. Like a mutated giraffe. Or basically what Scruffpuff said.

Hurston looks like a barren wasteland, like a map in development for a mod from 2014 that never quite got off the ground, and it makes me wonder what happens when these people play a game with even an iota of aesthetic distinctiveness. Maybe that’s the Fallout 76 demographic

LOL @ "a super earth at 1:10 scale"

So, not a super earth really, a mini earth?

Still, i think he is being fairly realistic with his timelines.

It seems clear people aren't going to be flying spaceships in this space game much anyway. I mean, not much to do at different places and it takes a long time to get there.

I had a good giggle at a guy on reddit who was saying there will be (note: future tense) lots of things to do when flying to other planets anyway (except for peons in small ships of course!) such as fix stuff, make plans, talk to org members (screw solo players then?). So... he's going to do that every single time he wants to fly anywhere? That's a lot of plan making to do and repairs.... are the ships going to be constantly falling apart or something?

EDIT: Also love the OP there. Of course, before being critical he first has to lay down his credentials and give the appropriate praise to CIG to avoid getting ripped to shreds by the cultists. I also love how he effectively says he will defend CIG not matter what they do. Isn't that like, the definition of white knight?

It's not a conversion kit to M. The idiots are just buying a kit with some guns to have an IdrisP that is about 70% of the way into M instead of 50%. But it's not pay-to-win.

Next year they'll have a kit for the M.
