I guess that's how life works, you know? I thought I was only having regular migraines (which I still do but in a different form now), and was blissfully unaware I had vascular issues. But if you do have migraine-like pains behind your eye, don't think twice, go to an opthamologist and get it checked out immediately. OIS usually leads to a stroke or at the least a CRAO (central retinal artery occlusion), and I was very lucky that although it was too late for the eye, my right carotid artery is properly blocked and as long as we monitor the situation (and I take verstatins for the rest of my life), won't cause future clots/strokes.

We (my GP and I) thought the pain was a symptom of migraine, not the cause of it or we might have headed this off earlier. But it could have been so much worse, I've seen what vascular dementia does.

And thanks for your thoughts, everyone, it's much appreciated.

Best wishes with your recuperation, and I am glad you were diagnosed before it got even worse. Remember to give your body the time it needs. The time after serious illness can be tough, and usually the mind wants to get back to normal life before the body is fully capable. And as sufferer of frequent migraines, including the occasional one originating behind the eye, your story is pretty scary. Maybe I should ask the doctor next time.

Its a shame I didn't notice the email about it, or my much-larger library, or my bank statement. Oh and Steam only return $40, despite it being fraud, and my bank won't help because *insert reason here*.

But the true culprit here is Steam. They should have known I wouldn't want so many copies of Battlecruiser 3000AD!

Seems to check out, based on the legendary Chris Roberts Christmas performance where he sat in front of a "game" that he clearly was seeing for the very first time in his life. In fact he looked like someone thawed a caveman and sat him in front of a PC. All very typical of game development.

I know Theranos isn't exactly news, but I was reading an article today and I couldn't get two paragraphs in...

quote:

Elizabeth Holmes dropped out of Stanford to found Theranos, inspired by a desire to help people like an uncle suffering from cancer. Combining the words "therapy" and "diagnosis" she started a company with the intention of revolutionizing phlebotomy, replacing extensive and expensive blood tests with a machine that could divine diseases from a drop of blood. And she didn't let little things stop her, like the fact that it was impossible.

Holmes and business partner Sunny Balwani continued to make grandiose claims -- going so far as to fake demos for investors -- while even their own staff and engineers told them their vision couldn't be realized. It wasn't a lie, it was just that the technology needed to catch up to the dream. A lie had been rebranded as a vision.

Hey, been a while since I looked in on the thread, recovering from a stroke which, in some ways fortunate, only took out my right eye and blocked a carotid artery. I'm ok, I was a bit numb about it at first and I'm slowly getting to grips with a different situation in my life, I'll take it on a day at a time.

It hasn't stopped me working on improving my guitar skills and although I haven't been writing lately, I have been going back and refactoring some of the tunes I recorded when I didn't have the guitars or chops, so here's another one I've "remedied":

* Found A Parp

* lyrics

Added a few more bells and whistles to it, and I'm pretty happy with it, it's not perfect. My respect for David Byrne as a rhythm guitarist is immense, and his playing is amazingly fluid, I hope one day I can get that good.

Hope you're ok.

I just think that's it's symptomatic of the whole unicorn phenomenon and the cult of personality. Jobs was considered a visionary when he was around, when it was more that he was a pedantic rear end in a top hat with extremely high standards. His failures and pratfalls are rehabilitated by fans who point to more positive aspects. Same for Elon Musk, but he surrounds himself with smart people. These are the _successes_.

I remember like 5 years ago everyone was talking about how nothing was faked. The engines produce actual thrust and it interacts with everything totally realisticlly. Yup, spot on.

But on top of this I think we're seeing the brand/personality cults becoming ever more unrealistic in their dreams:

- The dreams of absurd wealth from being an early cryptocoin adopter (despite being years late for the free money)
- The virtual world utopia of SC and SoTA
- The gaming utopia of Ouya to the medical egalitarianism of Theranos

It's shifted from tribalism to outright religion. There have always been those who made a fortune monetizing the lonely, the spiritually desperate and the naive - but the cults have donned the trappings of capitalism: Branding, profit, early adopter status, hype, the promise of explosive growth, meritocracy, paradigm shifts, return-on-investment, etc. I guess pyramid schemes and MLM were the first steps towards these much more opaque and durable scam entities. It's a vicious circle where the continued existence and financial success of the scam is touted as proof that it's not a scam. Fascinating really. Especially considering most of these were not created on purpose or intended as scams on a much smaller scale.

I think some of this comes from the internet turning humanity into a sort of Borg-collective-lite, where one dumb guy can immediately signal to tons of other dumb guys just like him who were otherwise geographically separated from or socially unaware of the scam. Now even the most harebrained scheme has immediate global reach. With an ocean of suckers that big, you're gonna catch some poo poo no matter what you bait the hook with.

Elizabeth Holmes was a college drop out (only 2 semesters!) that founded a business to create a completely unfeasible technology. Chris Roberts was cut from digital anvil and was out of the video game industry for a decade (even longer away from the programming end seeing as how he was mostly directing cutscenes and managing scope towards in the later years) and kickstarted a company to create an MMO game that was lightyears ahead of anything on the market. Both these clowns founded companies on pure hype, pulled in buttloads of cash, and then started work on developing products that were more or less impossible. It didn't matter that they didn't have the skills and knowledge to know what they were selling was impossible. They got the money and it was up to the people that they hired to make their dreams a reality. And those people got yelled at then fired when they couldn't deliver. And after years of fake blood test demos and sand worms, it will come tumbling down.

OH BOY IT'S TIME FOR A NEW PRODUCTION VIDEO

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W5p90TJS9eM

So let's see, it's been 3 weeks of solid work since the last recap video. That's Almost 1/3rd of a quarterly patch. What they have to show for it:

* A recap of the truck they just released, that is broken and costs 140 us dollars
* They have made a bunch of luxury silverware for the space yacht that they will never finish
* Here is a clip of a spaceman doing punches. Naturally we're showing this in greybox because it's far too advanced to just be rolled into the game. We can see that punching is going to add a lot of utility for the player in our game about spaceships and ranged combat. We're very excited to introduce this feature that is definitely not a basic part of the cryengine platform that we are hyping up to make it seem like we did something this last month.

That's it.

3 weeks of dev and they have: an art asset they already made that doesn't work, new art assets they are making that don't matter, and a punch mechanic that comes with the engine. They have nothing.

Give me a few hours with Blender and a prerigged model, and i could make that punch animation, and i'm a rank amateur at animations. I only learned to help my son with one of his projects.

There again, i remember when CIG was trying to pass off inverse kinematics as never been done before technology that they had invented, instead of it coming as standard with CryEngine.
