Game dev is hard, but it's easy because Chris Roberts Wing Commander wunderkind.
This takes time because it's all new technology, but it will go quickly because they're using a well-known and supported engine.
It's a custom engine and that takes time, but it's also Lumberyard so their partnership with Amazon means they'll get full custom backing and support.
There are multinational studios so it takes time to build them and get them up to speed, but they also let them work around the clock and get things done incredibly quickly.
They're inventing all new technology that has never been seen before so bugs are expected, but the technology is also mature and has been around forever so its plug and play nature means rapid iteration.
It uses motion-capture for the most realistic possible movie-like movement, but it also has a sophisticated physics engine so objects interact realistically within a dynamic environment.

Everything is true and all of it is good for Star Citizen!

quote:

He identified three main reasons why the original launch failed: an over-emphasis on graphical quality, a lack of modern MMORPG expertise in the development team, and a mentality that all problems could be fixed in future patches. These evolved from the team's prior experience on Final Fantasy XI, the previous MMORPG in the Final Fantasy series. As the series has been renowned for its state-of-the-art graphics, the original development team gained an unhealthy obsession with maximizing graphical quality at the cost of server performance, which was unsustainable for an online game with tens of thousands of high definition assets. In designing Final Fantasy XI, the team spent a year playing EverQuest, the most successful MMORPG of the early 2000s.[44] However, they lacked experience with modern games in the genre; the Final Fantasy XIV team was instructed merely to make something "different from Final Fantasy XI". Yoshida admonished that the team should "go play World of Warcraft for a year [for inspiration]" instead.[44]

Guess how many of these 3 main culprits are shared with Star Citizen?

FFXIV's lead was replaced by higher-ups in Square Enix. There is no risk of that in CI, unless investors start with their demands or whales suddenly sober up.

And I am not sure whether even Yoshida would be able to salvage SC.

The irony here is that, FFXIV has had a rebuild, a lot of patches, and 3 expansions, all of this during the dev lifetime of Star Citizen (assuming Star Citizen started in 2010-2011)

I have to say in my opinion, having finished Shadowbringers, its the best FF yet.

Yes and no. If you like the aesthetic it's a great game but there's a barrier to entry that is the pre expansion content. It's a hundred quests of garbage run around and click on things with some semblance of story. If you can get past that and hit the first xpacs worth of content then if starts getting really good story wise (if you are into ff games) and some even say the best of ff history.

E: Also before you hit xpac content and unlock more abilities you don't really have a lot of buttons to press as the global CD is like 2.5 seconds so its pretty slow.

HA! The same section stood out to me for two reasons. First, obviously "There is a danger we could make like too many missions to actually maintain" is funny on multiple levels. There is one incomplete star system and they are already struggling to maintain the handful they have there.

Second, I am 99% sure he had to self-censor when he says "years ago now before 3.0 or even 2.0; we built all of our missions in flow graph that came with... CryEngine the others we had like so all that had to go when we went into subsumption"

Last thing I know of, CIG tried to price Crytek out of the lawsuit by demanding they post a 2 million dollar bond to cover CIG's legal expenses if Crytek loses, arguing that Crytek is going bankrupt and by the end of this lawsuit might not be able to pay CIG's legal fees if so required. The judge pointed out that while it's true Crytek is in financial trouble, it would be wrong to price Crytek out of the courtroom, so she's set the bond to 500k. Crytek has like, a month or two to post the bond, at which point discovery will begin.

No huge new scandals within the last month I think, other people will have to pitch in before that.

Yes, Kayak is still a good dog.

You get to play the first 35 levels of any job free, so why not? Job = class, one character can play as all classes to max level for a single fee of 13 dollars a month. So feel free to play all the jobs to level 35.

Try it for yourself. Its definitely better than Star Citizen.

Still in progress. They've attempted to get it dismissed a couple of times, filings have been adjusted, and lawyers have been changed. Skadden, Arp and Flom are out of the picture and they've been replaced by IP lawyers who appear to be more engaged and higher energy. Crytek also has to post bond in the event that they lose - Californian law allows for an amount to be held in escrow against non-payment of fees and costs. We're approaching the end of discovery and it's still on for a jury trial.

I really fail to see the supposed $46 million in marketing in action. I guess they've paid a few streamers, and made a few commercials to appeal to backers, but that's pretty anemic for such a big budget project.

The subscriber money (touted at $3mill/year) is supposed to go towards "funding behind-the-scenes shows like Inside Star Citizen in addition to Jump Point, the monthly digital magazine about Star Citizen. This revenue also funds the development and release of subscriber-exclusive perks like the monthly hangar flair series and exclusive subscriber merchandise!"

so basically a streamer, a garage mag, and like a week of 1 artist's time per month and some t-shirts

Not sure where the other $2.5 million is going, and that's being generous.

Is there any better marketing than spending all that money to make a tiny sliver of progress on some of the tasks that are years behind? Selling fake progress is what brings in money, ergo working on the game is marketing. Also, spending that money on a new Porsche for Chris is marketing. Gotta sell the fiction that the company is doing great to keep up the faith and pledging, and only companies that are doing great spend money on Porsches.

Forbes (the magazine, not just the bloggers) posted a nice article about the people in charge of Star Citizen. One highlight was Chris's former common-law wife getting a restraining order against Sandi for supposedly "stalking and threatening both her and her daughter for nearly three years."
They also referenced a court-filed declaration where Chris claimed that Sandi had once tried to strangle him.
