CIG's blatant cargo-culture never ceases to amaze. They certainly know how to imitate other, more successful game companies yet haven't really uncovered the finer points such as actually producing games.

Box-grabbing fidelity on par with Super Mario 64. Well, okay, SM64 did a better job obscuring that it vanished and reappeared objects when you pick them up and drop them.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZyUGT9YPhg It's expected that every game is going to "cheat" in certain regards, from what it displays for the player or how they manipulate objects, but most people accept and even appreciate the strange and nuanced coding that creates the proper illusions under normal play. Of course, Chris is obsessed with doing everything the "right" way, so it's enjoyable to both see him ram his head against a brick wall trying to force his vision into reality as well as the blowback when he's forced to make concessions that are somehow jankier than implementations in other prefab engines (meanwhile all the time they've spent trying to customize cryengine has basically been wasted). notoriousman fucked around with this message at 09:24 on May 12, 2017 |

starkebn posted:When did "wait for a game to be released and there be enough reviews to discount the paid ones" become such a rare customer viewpoint? Games don't get released anymore in this, the barren hellscape of perpetual early access. Combine that with decades-old names and faces panhandling and selling promises on any one of several crowdfunding platforms and there's no impetus to actually release games anymore to profit from them. Meanwhile, gamers have always had nonexistent impulse control and demand a constant stream of content; it's a wonder they're only now being used as guinea pigs with wallets. And finally, the Internet being the beast it is today, the constant barrage of information from various sources makes astroturfing and "reputation management" incredibly easy since people get that much less critical when there's too many voices to filter the noise from the genuine. parp

They could just as easily fail to cobble together some fake, scripted demo and talk about some Discord knock-off for over an hour during their annual namesake convention (for a game still in alpha). Backers would still fork over cash, of course.
