Interesting to look at the last game the lead programmer for Cig actually released. When Vikings Attack! looks a lot more fun than sc, where did it all go wrong?

You realize launching SQ42 alone will make as much as all ship sales thus far, right?
And then launching SQ42 2
And SQ42 3
Assuming 2 million sales each. And if it's not good enough to warrant 2 million sales, then it's not worth $150 million and six years.

There will be no issues maintaining development and servers if SQ42 and SC are good.
They need endlessly more money because CR let the budget run away. CR expects just the single player games they're releasing before the MMO (SQ42 1-3) to cost $150 million.
And who know how much more the much larger MMO will add to that.

Many figured that all they had to do was make a “space game” and get there first and they would succeed. Almost all of them missed what made CIG and Star Citizen so successful despite the game not even being out and having many, many, issues and delays." Jesus Christ :psyduck:

CIG is "partnered" with Amazon and using their engine to do...what exactly?

In conclusion, CIG is a land of contrasts. Thank you for your time, and see you sometime in 2017.

technically speaking - the SC's gameplay based on PBR in the dynamic lighting environment is a mind-blowing tech. Nothing of the current over-hyped FPS games can be evenly compared to it. Not even closely.

I think CR expanded the scope of the PU and made Squadron 42 a seperate game so he could build his company up to where he wanted it to be. Now that he got his AAA game company for free, I expect things to be developed a lot faster in 2017 and beyond. But, will see.

In the end, I'm almost as excited to maybe read a book about how he was able to accomplish building a multimillion dollar company solely on backer pledges than I am about the game.

To be fair the "Ancient technology is better then anything now" is a pretty well established trope, and it could make sense in the SC universe where people have apparently forgotten how to make the Roomba and computer controlled gun turrets. However it makes no sense when you've apparently still got the blueprints on file and can just start rolling ships off the production line again.

Also, as a side note I'd love to see a video game subvert the "powerful ancient technology" trope by... like having the big bad open the ancient super weapon vault and discover it held something like bronze cannons. Sure the were terrifying at the time, but what did you expect from some bronze age sheep fuckers?

Also keep this in mind:

- There isn't actually even a planet yet - just the image of one - therefore it is not landable, and probably never will be. The farthest they're likely to get is a "landing zone" which will have a loading screen and be an instance, not actually a place on the planet proper (since there is no planet proper).

- Similar to above, there are no true moons either. Since you can't land on anything, and the images are just placeholders, whether or not they are "procedural" is rather a moot point, aside from leveraging the word "procedural" in order to pry more cash from backers.

- The map has no bearing on the actual entities in the PTU (such as they are). The PTU is a space backdrop and some copy/pasted assets scattered around the map at particular coordinates. It's the most they could manage, and considering how poor a job it is, it's likely to remain that way indefinitely. Expect a few more copy/pasted stuff in that play area as proof of progress going forward.

- None of this will matter once we have subsumption, network 2.0, persistence 2.0, and more ship pipelines get refactored. Once that happens, the game will just gel out of the primordial components and then it's just a matter of days to reach every stretch goal. Completionist packages have never been a better deal than they are right now - remember, CIG said that they are just now starting to research how some of their assets for the past 5 years might be made to work. They're practically finished!

First day of a new sale and free fly, following CIG's mic drop with the 3.0 schedule!

... what a damp squib.

If you go look at what's on offer for this sale, it's profoundly unexciting. The good stuff would probably still sell like hotcakes, but that trick won't work indefinitely -- even Citizens will eventually realize that they can't actually use 5 personal Javelins. So CIG has to keep that stuff in reserve and trot out these warmed-over leavings, but they're not even getting enough purchases to push them to the ~$100K daily breakeven point, on the first day of a heavily front-loaded sale, having had to incur huge amounts of technical/engineering debt (via the just-published production schedule) even to get to this point.

Any completionists?

https://robertsspaceindustries.com/about-rsi

At Roberts Space Industries, we are dissatisfied. In the words of our illustrious original Chairman Roberts at the first Board of Directors meeting in 2068, “Complacency rarely leads to innovation. As scientists, engineers, and artists, it’s our job to be dissatisfied. We question, we analyze, we have that itch constantly gnawing at us that says ‘we can do better.’ I want that dissatisfaction etched into the foundation of the company so we perpetually push Humanity toward bigger and better things.”

That step towards Humanity’s future was cemented with the unveiling of the Quantum Core Engine technology in 2075. The Quantum Core allowed Humanity to explore the solar system with unprecedented speed. An achievement of this magnitude would be enough for most companies to settle, to become complacent, but RSI ignored that temptation.

Today, RSI diverts more funds toward its Research & Development division than any of its competitors, still trying to scratch that itch that says we can do better.

They stayed dissatisfied. They strove to do more.
