Did you play D:OS1? If so, is there anything in the game mechanics in 2 that differentiates?

lol listen to us, talking about game mechanics for an actual video game and not just dreaming up unfathomably complex fantasies about how awesome this video game's mechanics will be later, just as soon as it revolutionizes everything we thought we knew about what's possible.
To add on to what Bofast said there's mainly been a lot of stream lining. Some stats have been merged, AP is now a flat 4 as standard as opposed to being calculated by stats (that no longer exist), the way armour/barriers works was changed a lot and the way status effects/knockdowns work was pretty dramatically changed too. Nothing that really breaks up the core game play loop, just QoL changes that reduce the micromanagement required. From less of a direct game play perspective everything being voice acted is new too I think and their story telling has also come a long way, for a lot of D:OS1 I had no idea what I was doing or why I was doing it. They apparently fixed that in the Enhanced Edition but I never played much of that. There was also no "competitive co-op", it was just a standard party RPG for whatever that ends up being worth.

D:OS1 was a good game, D:OS2 feels like a pretty notable improvement across the board.

I can't believe that when I finally catch up my first post is about a different game and the thread is facing down the full force of the goon conquering 3.0. I guess the thread will die as it lived... rubbing.

I feel like Roberts relies more on reputation than charisma. A reputation that he built in the early days when the industry was small and expectations were low. A reputation that only a small group of people are aware exists. I guess that small group are 100% his marks though so I can't argue about that second trait.

Good stuff overall. If I'm honest I don't have a problem with cosmetic loot boxes because I don't care enough about my pixels but the money they bring in means I aren't forced to pay for stuff I do want. Still a step in the right direction should always be applauded.

It's still gambling and should totally be regulated, specially in games where you can trade those cosmetic items.
Skipping a few pages to reply so apologies if I'm repeating things.

I agree but banning loot boxes won't fix the industry. They will just try to fill the shortfall with equally terrible practices. I wouldn't bet against things like enforced DLC or whatever being brought in as a replacement.

EA won't turn over a new leaf, you'll just see things like having to pay to unlock leagues or in FIFA, or charging $9.99 for an "Empire Pack" to unlock Darth Vader with no alternative approach. Blizzard might start charging for map packs or heroes or whatever.

I admit its selfish but loot boxes had no impact on me, I just worry about what shady practice will replace them if they go.

I also wouldn't be shocked if they leant into the gambling and just put a "you must be 18 or over" type warning before you buy them. I don't know if you can separate that from the overall rating of the game though.

Like I said, its a good thing and absolutely a step in the right direction, I just aren't ready to celebrate yet.

All of those are perfectly fine. I would love to see them try to do that.

I dunno where are you from but in pretty much anywhere, being categorized as "gambling" means that something as simple as a "you must be 18 or over" warnings do jack poo poo, gambling is regulated seriously because people tend to do really stupid stuff when gambling.

See, the issue is not the companies trying to milk all the dollars they can. The issue is them using gambling practices to do so.
In the EU the second I turned 18 I could walk into any casino and throw away as much money as I wanted on whatever sort of game I wanted. Things like bingo websites get advertised during prime time television. Same goes for all the gambling/betting mobile apps, they advertise them during every single sporting event so maybe I just don't see the same sense of heavy regulation

I would much, much prefer OW to keep selling loot boxes to people who want to play dress up than to start charging me for maps for example. Same goes for FIFA and it's ultimate team, charging for each individual league would be a travesty. Hearthstone can keep selling cards as long as i can earn them in other ways and the game is free.

I'm not trying to claim that loot boxes are good for games or anything, especially with things like PUBG and CS:GO having boxes that you have to pay to open and EA putting notable content and pay to win type stuff in there. That's why I originally specified that if it's cosmetic only and you can get them without paying I just don't really care and think there are far worse ways (for me) that these companies could try to gouge money.

There are gambling machines in pubs, service stations, hotels and a whole bunch of other things all across the country. I'm sure they're regulated too but they get away with simply putting an '18+ only" sticker nearby which is why I asked if that was feasible in game.

You waved it away as "no, because it needs to be regulated" but if it can work for my local with 0 supervision I'm sure a company can find a way to make a similar gambit work.

E: Blizzard has already bypassed gambling laws by giving away card packs if you buy 1 dust. There are absolutely loop holes. Regulations mean very little.

Look, this is some reddit-level discussion stuff and this is not the thread for it. So I'm out.

If you don't realize the inherent problem with gambling in video games (even for cosmetic stuff) and how it is a billion times worse than buying teams or whatever if FIFA games then I don't think I'll be able to make you see it. The games have to get money, just ask yourself who are they trying to get money from with the gambling mechanic?

As for the "why make regulations if they gonna be bypassed" then gently caress! I have no words.
I'm absolutely not arguing against regulating gambling in any way and aren't a fan of loot boxes. I think companies should be more open with those things.

I'm just asking "if given proper regulations and oversight is it possible that they could put an 18+ part and carry on like nothing happened?"

Well, yes, let's change that to they need *all* the money.
Not really. In the same way the sticker doesn't stop kids gambling on the machines in some of the places I mentioned before. I'm not asking if its ethical though (gambling pretty much universally isn't), just if they can try to create enough wiggle room to get away with it.
