I must be in the minority though, as a potential backer. I'd love to get a Starflight/Freelance type mash up. Even if it's a single player game. I'm not very good at FPS games, and if Star Citizen actually happens the amount of griefing CIG introduced because of this FPS nonsense will be off the chart.

Every big ship will be 100% NPC because the first dozen times Captain Solo is shot in the back of the head and his ship is stolen by a "loyal crew member" will be the end. CIG builds these ideas with seemingly no idea what the obvious ramifications will be.

Ultimately if Star Citizen is ever made, it will not be a fun game. Nobody will trust anybody unless they are friends from outside that game. People will keep tallies of how much they've ruined players who bought ships by stealing or destroying them. It will be a griefing paradise. Star Citizen will just not be fun; unless you play it in a controlled environment or single player. Eventually people may think about the future gameplay instead of buying the next concept sale. But that would require people to demand CIG actually start explaining this poo poo ideas they've promised. "PvP slider" doesn't even make sense.

Haha wow, it never really clicked for me that Star Citizen is like custom-made for griefing. My mind still boggles at the idea of dropping 5 figures on a single game.

Refund of 16240 Euros, $17000 dollars.

You could go on a month-long international vacation for that kind of money. Or buy at least a decade's worth of new games and gaming systems. Or buy a new car. Or pay off a crapton of debt. Hell, even sitting on your butt at home doing nothing for a year would still be a better use of that money than Star Citizen.

Honestly, even if Star Citizen was exactly what this guy wanted it to be, there is no way in hell he'd be happy spending that much money to play the game. Over-saturation/burnout would set in before he'd get anywhere near his money's worth.

  • Vehicles and ships can clip through the ground or bounce into the air
  • Lots of desync despite a powerful server right next to them
  • Still really annoying jump-cuts between animations
  • Characters T-posing on top of vehicles/ships
  • Changing perspective while piloting results in the player having no helmet and a messed up face
  • Power management doesn't seem to have a clear effect
  • Players were having constant issues with item 2.0 / interaction system. It was often unclear where you could interact with something or it just wouldn't work.
  • No sign of turret improvements, from what i could tell there wasn't even a lead indicator and no gyroscope either.
  • Oxygen loss doesn't appear to kill you at the moment.
  • Altimeters seem to be broken, they were in orbit and it read -100
  • Landing gear doesn't report correct status on HUD
  • Contrails seem to only work for some ships
  • Time of day seems to be different between players standing next to each other - should be server authoritative https://clips.twitch.tv/SmoggyFilthyNoodleKeepo
  • Falling appears to be a set speed, no acceleration to terminal velocity
  • Falling characters don't seem to get locked to a ships physics grid
  • Ships physics grids still end up grabbing other ships and bits of debris in the environment
  • Gravity seems to only affect character models, not ships, they can hang in the air while powered down
  • Some guns bug out and can't be reloaded
  • Characters with guns out and shooting appear to be standing idle to other players.
  • Some players are occasionally invisible to other players.
  • Gunfire effects seem missing for same/other players
  • Ship survives boosting into the planets surface from space at high speed with no damage
  • Vehicles that aren't supposed to be able to survive re-entry can land with no ill effects
  • Some terrain puts vehicles into uncontrollable horizontal spins
  • Doors still don't work sometimes
That's just the stuff that isn't turned off because it was too buggy, like Quantum Travel, MobiGlas, NPCs, Missions, Cargo, etc.

The netcode is the best though, even with a dedicated line, a powerful server right next to them, players are desyncing, appearing as invisible, or not synchronising animations on other players screens - something is just fundamentally hosed there.

I also enjoyed how Roberts responded when asked what he uses to play the game. Deer in the headlight stare before a rambling 10 minute response.

Toops posted:

The fact is, Chris Roberts doesn't actually like video games. If he did, he would be talking about and (more importantly) showing gameplay. He would be driving his organization to produce a game that you can play. Star Citizen would be something you could actually play without tumbling down the matchstick house. He would be uncompromising in his pursuit of a fun experience for the end-user. Instead, he compromises Star Citizen The Game at every turn out of unfathomable, incalculable narcissism. In reality, his entire world view is centered around building a cinematic monument to his "genius." All he really wants is a perpetual sizzle real. He wants that roaring applause when the space commando flips the helmet in the air and pulls it on like a "badass." That "moment" right there was the pinnacle of Star Citizen. That was the plan. That was the pitch, the pledge, that's every 10FTC, ATV, every art asset, and every line of code. Right there. The "game" is filler which acts as a simple bonding agent between stunted, imbecilic Chris Roberts mini-movies.

Slow_Moe posted:

This here is actually the crux of the problem. Roberts never cared about making games, but he needs a vessel for his "creativity", and since Hollywood wont have him around, he will have to do it via computer animation. That's why SC exists, to fund SQ42, so Chris can be a big Hollywood director, without actually being a big Hollywood director. With SQ42 he gets to hobnob with the cool famous celebrities like Gary Oldman and Luke Skywalker and that guy from LotR. Because that's where a creative genius like him belongs.

Just you wait, you'll all be sorry you doubted. Oh yes.
These posts finally made it click why Star Citizen has always seemed odd to me. Chris Roberts is obsessed with FIDELITY to the exclusion of everything else. He's the kind of guy who bases his rating of movies on how good the 4K HD explosions looked. My criteria for video games are basically the opposite of Chris Roberts: I care about if a game is fun to play (and replay), and graphics are a secondary concern.

Example: I recently played a game of Civ 5 on a huge map with 22 civs and 41 city states. In order to actually play this monster of a game, I had to knock most of the graphics settings down to Low or Medium to get it to play without rendering issues. I had a poo poo-ton of fun playing that match, and would happily do it again.

In Crobbert's eyes, "just knock the graphics settings down a notch" is heresy on par with liking ET: the video game.

Here's my attempt at a summary

* Began with a 45min delay + 3 or 4 commercials for chariots
* New features (facial recognition, voice stuff) introduced then promptly revealed to be coming after 3.0, not with it
* After warping to the quest destination, the pilot's client crashed. The other two players were still in the ship but couldn't interact with it
* After 10 minutes of awkward troubleshooting they eventually had to restart. Cue another 15-20 minutes of mostly silence and long shots of a black room and an increasingly angry Chris as the demo is rebooted
* Because the demo was nearly 100% scripted, they had to do everything all over again leading up to the warp crash
* this included the world's worst RP of all time. yes, they still repeated the RP in the 2nd attempt
* They get to the planet. it's janky. a ton of pop-in and missing models. We all begin to notice that the lighting / colors for each player (they keep switching cameras) is completely different. It's suggested that even the time of day for players is different
* They find the quest object - a ship's black box which turned out to be a red cube that was just laying in a random spot on the floor
* Then they were ambushed, surprising nobody
* They shot the bad guy's ship out of the air from their moon rover, but they clearly weren't even aiming at the guy and it was a really embarrassing moment of scripting
* An Idris comes to save them, and jitter-janks its way to the surface. It extends a ramp for the rover to climb, and the entire thread knew at once it was going to end in disaster. It did. After many failed attempts the rover clipped through the ramp and exploded. The wheels literally fell off and rolled toward the camera, and I very nearly blacked out in laughter
* also the red black box was aboard the rover but nobody acknowledged the mission was a failure
* Sometime after this we cut to a commercial for an RSI-branded webcam. Lots of scare tactics to make you think your existing webcam lacks the horsepower to handle Star Citizen's new facial stuff
* Later, the Idris goes to space and is ambushed a 2nd time, surprising nobody for a 2nd time
* An epic space battle ensues as two goliaths fight through 6-7fps space and jitter-jank into one another. One explodes
* It's the end of the demo. Chris then has a sudden and definitely not scripted idea - let's let the goliaths fight again, but this time the bad guy could win!
* It's another 20 minutes waiting for the really obviously fake and scripted demo to spin up. It's awkward silence. Sandi wanders on stage in her weird clown outfit to give Chris a rum and coke
* The epic space battle begins anew. I cannot notice a single difference, other than a fighter bounces off the hull of the Idris like a Loony Toons cartoon, and the idris rams the bad guy who explodes in 6-7fps fashion. More jitter-jank

Then Chris ends the presentation prematurely before being reminded that the employees are coming out to say goodbye. He asks them to take a bow. They do so. that's it
I never thought CIG could pull off such a level badness. That shitshow was worse than I ever dreamed was possible.

The killer is still the crash and the subsequent boring-as-poo poo "speedrun" showing off just how terrible the game would be even if it functioned.

If the rings spin off due to collisions with player ships, that would be because the rings are created as physics objects (which makes them conserve momentum during collisions), and are configured with a preposterously small amount of mass relative to the ships. It would be incredibly stupid to make those rings physics objects at all. They should be normal game objects with normal colliders which basically give them infinite intertia (think Doom-style walls).

This is yet more evidence for me that CIG has massively downscaled all objects in the game world. An example would be, if a humanoid model is ususllay 1 CryEngine unit in FarCry, making a human 0.001 unit and scaling everything relative to that would effectively make your level 1000x bigger. 1 meter turns into 1km.

Of course, any loving freshspawn game developer right out of college looking for apples on the coast knows not to do this, because it breaks your physics engine (everything acts like it doesn't have enough mass) and it fucks with collisions (because collision detection is only accurate down to roughly the centimeter depending on how fast the object is moving and what your framerate is). Any of that sound familiar?

That's why I always rail on the SC devs. They appear to have made almost every possible rookie mistake in the book and they don't seem to be fixing any of it, just building more floors on top of the burning wicker foundation which was built on a landfill which once was a sacred Native American burial ground.

Star Citizen is fundamentally doomed and will, imo, never be salvaged into a playable game.
I love posts like this, it's cool to see the plausible "under the hood" explanations as to why everything in Star Citizen is so hosed.

It also reinforces that no amount of "tweaking" will be able to solve problems like this, the fuckup is something that's at a base level, and you'd have to literally start from scratch to "fix" it.

Coming in Star Citizen 2018 2019: a revolutionary new Chris Roberts technology: using more than one core/thread at a time! It will truly REVOLUTIONIZE THE GAMING INDUSTRY!

Assuming bankruptcy proceedings haven't started by 2019.

I have an anecdote that reminds me somewhat of Star Citizen.

Several years ago my wife and I were playing World of Warcraft. We had just killed a crocolisk and after it died, my wife commented that she liked when they flipped over when they died and had their feet up in the air. I looked at the recently killed creature on my monitor - clearly right-side-up with feet tucked underneath. I asked what she was smoking, she asked if I was blind, and this escalated rapidly into a series of increasingly heated insults into the other person's mental faculties until finally one of us thought to look at the other person's monitor.

Lo and behold, on one of our monitors the creature was dead right-side-up, on the other, he was upside-down. A light bulb went off in my head - of course it would work this way! What better way to create some simple variation in the gameplay while limiting network overhead then having important states, such as the location of an enemy and its status as alive or dead, transmitted by the server, and unimportant gameplay states, like the noises its making, its attack animation choice, and which model is used for after it's killed, handled by the client?

After all, what kind of lunatic would care that everyone saw the exact same thing even if it has absolutely no impact on gameplay?

That question was answered by the frantic handwavings of an aging, overweight, autistic man in November of 2012.
World of Warcraft got into the gaslighting game before it was cool.

That is legit interesting that you could do however many variations you want to with stuff like that and the only consequence would be a funny mixup situation like this.

E: I suppose this might make debugging a little harder if there's something wrong with one of the animations; you'd get complaints from some players, while other players would think everything is fine, and technically both groups are correct.

Good news, your pound is still spendable:

Things are falling apart and have been since the middle of last year. I've had six people ask me to go on record or reveal sources lately (I've declined). I'm sure they've talked to Bootcha and Beer and outside contractors and current/former employees and god knows who else.

I know you'd like to imagine that somehow, Chris and Sandi and Ben and Jared and Tony and Erin are really, really nice people, who care about the backers that gave them millions.

Here's the thing, and I'm trying not to be mean, just as real as possible: they don't give a gently caress about anything but money. The product that you'll get delivered in 3 weeks is an absolute travesty and that's going to be it. They'll continue the Live support for the game, promising additional content and increased player counts, but this is it; 3.0, in the state at which is arrives, is going to be Star Citizen. That's it.

When that happens, when the dreams are no longer just accessible in the mind but available to be played on the keyboard, that's when things are going to go into an absolute loving frenzy. Chris Roberts and everyone else in his little tower understand this. They 100% understand.

I'm sorry your dream space game is going to be an absolutely janky piece of poo poo with almost no content but what the players create for themselves. I really am. As a backer, I'd liked to have played a fun PC space game, too.

But this is it. This is what you're going to get. And it's just, it's just awful. It's really, really loving bad.
It's weird to think that we're getting fairly close to the MVP release, and that the reality of "yeah that's the game, that's it, here's the 'Star Citizen' you paid for" will finally hit.

Eventually Star Citizen will join the "janky unfinished pieces of poo poo" game lists populated by E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Superman 64, Extreme Paintbrawl, and Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing, with bonus appearances on "biggest high-budget gaming flops ever".

But hey, it'll never be truly forgotten unlike Sandi Gardiner's Mae Demming's cut cameo in American Satan. :v:

idk what ungilating even means
loving christ just go play Elite: Dangerous or Kerbal Space Program until you're bored senseless, then spend the remaining $30,000 on literally anything else worthwhile.

Even if SC was literally everything this guy wanted it to be it wouldn't be worth $30,000.

Quote for the new page, seriously this poo poo is bad and it's hilarious that Chris "fidelity" Roberts can't even get the visuals to look good anymore, when that's all he truly cares about.
