It's a good point. Weirdly, Warren Spector I remember in the early aughts saying smart things about this - saying that space in a video game was always a tension between distance between things and the stuff you do in them. In Legend of Zelda: a Link to the Past the overworld is something the character can walk across in just a few minutes, but there is enormous depth and stuff to do in all of it.

I say weirdly because until that post of Wing Commander jobs I didn't realize he was involved in the early WCs
Warren Spector's dream job is to make a game takes place in one perfectly simulated city block.

I never knew Babylon 5 had two failed spin-offs!

That reminds me, Straczynski turned out to be such a loving hack. Like a Lucas or a Roberts. I wonder who was in his ear making B5 good (it was real good, and I even liked Crusade)

His comic books were almost Kevin Smith level lovely writing.
Writing the vast majority of episodes for a weekly TV show either makes you turn out really good screenplays or it breaks you. I'm sure it helped immensely to have the major plotlines mapped out beforehand too.

Blizzard gets to charge because they are arguably the best games studio on Earth. They still have their major announcements/reveals free to the public as well as all the esport tourneys. Only the QA panels are behind a ticket. They give massive amounts of exclusive cosmetics to all their games with it.

And they still get tons of flak for it. They are the only studio as far as I know that charge so its not "standard industry practice" as the citizens were bleating.

Chris thought he was so above Blizzard because he was gonna charge for the entire con, something even Blizzard doesn't do (because its stupid as gently caress you want as many people as possible seeing your new trailers). And he got snippy (that still showed through after PR smoothing) with the fans over it.

He's in his own universe.
Blizzard is the moneymaking juggernaut that Crobbers wishes he was. 4 massive franchises, three of which that have multiple games released over at least 10 years, and they've more or less successfully navigated the perilous waters that are loot boxes.

Comparing CIG to Naughty Dog, arguably one of the most skilled and able development studios around currently, is probably your first mistake. :)

While CR May only mention Rockstar as his equal, Naughty Dog would quite easily also chew him up and spit him out and not even realized there was something there.
naughty dog doesn't have programmers, they have literal techno-wizards

No offense taken! I'm just very passionate about fictional travel systems. Like space commuter trains.
the hyperspace kamikaze scene was real bad in terms of established verisimilitude, but i think the "we have to exit hyperspace under the Starkiller's shields" in TFA was probably worse since it was a blatant attempt by abrams to reproduce that one scene in star trek 2009

both nu-star trek/wars series also crap all over the idea that it still takes days/weeks to travel places even when going faster than light. previous writers put limits on fantastical space transportation systems for a good reason, but i guess everything has to be now now now fast fast fast

This isn’t meant as a correction — your comment just prompted me to want to share a gamer nerdout about Assassin’s Creed Odyssey.

...

It’s all set up so beautifully well, and it’s only the kind of thing you get from studios that have been iterating release after release. The interplay of so many different mechanics from so many prior releases is just really staggering, and they all work well together to reinforce the holistic experience. If combat sucked, it wouldn’t work at all. If I couldn’t tightrope walk or climb up nearly every vertical structure around, it wouldn’t work half as well. There’s just so much being brought to the experience at once that even without the potential big lottery wins of an epic loot drop, it’d still be fun. The grind is a blast.

And Fort infiltrations are just one subset of so many in the game. It’s just some seriously epic level game design. An embarrassment of riches.

It’s not perfect of course. The branched narrative stuff is shallow and dialogue choices don’t feel like they mean much. And it’s still got that self-indulgent meta story Ubisoft loves shoehorning into all the AC games. But the game’s flaws are forgivable when it’s strengths are so plentiful and satisfying. The game is (to me) an 8/10, but it’s a drat majestic 8/10, even while feeling more MMO like than I ever expected from an AC game.
odyssey got a bad rap from some reviewers because they had to rush through it to finish the story so they hit that leveling wall pretty hard. i had an absolute blast just running around and getting into (and out of) trouble and even though i played on nightmare and died a whole lot, it never felt unfair. i would keep trying to win some horribly lopsided fight of my own making because the combat was so good and provided enough tools to pull it off. the skill trees and gear affix/engraving system support a lot of playstyle customization and if it had shipped with the mastery level system (spend ability points for engraving-like bonuses) and transmog, it would've been close to perfect.
