Senior Scarybagels posted:I knew someone who swallowed the star citizen pill so hard that they wanted to get one of these yachts to turn it into a roleplaying brothel. Is there anyone left who actually wants a space combat game, or is it all just whales with fantasies of running space brothels and think other players will actual submit to participating in some sort of slavery system? No wonder they're working on luxury bars with saunas instead of actual gameplay, they're making a rich person future simulator, not a game.

Can't wait till they drop hundreds of identical copies of that all over the planet and check off "Exploration - Caves and Caverns" on the roadmap lol. It looks like they just piled a bunch of rock assets together in a pillow-fort fashion. I'm playing Astroneer right now and it has randomly generated caves that look 50 times better, and it's made by a tiny, tiny team.

Dunno if anyone posted this, but on this "Kickstarter MMOs report card" video, the Youtuber gives a mostly positive + hopeful but realistic overview of Star Citizen (starts around 13 minutes in) - the worst thing he has to say about it is that the persistent world doesn't seem to be anywhere close to ready even for testing yet. He gives it a "C" grade overall mostly based on its potential, which is SUPER generous. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F9Huv3hSY5o Of course, Citizen shills are in the comments trying to sell him on the game, giving huge diatribes that don't answer any of his questions...!

That looks tedious as gently caress to play, but STILL further along than Star Citizen.

Xenocides posted:Who cannot see this guy’s charisma and charm leading to a vast virtual empire? Against my better judgement I read this whole thing. And the thing that struck me is, what he's describing could be an interesting game. Just, not a multiplayer one (or at least not with all those jobs being staffed by actual players). FTL is a good, minimalist version of a crew management game, and hell, Puzzle Pirates shows you can even pull it off in a multiplayer setting. But in Puzzle Pirates, even the most lowly task (bilging) was actually pretty engaging, and you could jump in and out of it as you wished if you weren't feeling it. Does this guy seriously think that anyone will buy Star Citizen (or whatever game he's making up in his head) and want to play a loving cook on his ship? Or a medic, doing nothing but treating scrapes and bruises until the one moment they get boarded? Or his 1st officer, ferrying orders from him to the crew? Or that players who are pirates would ever put up with being actually locked up by him on starvation rations until he entices them to join his crew? No, gently caress that, they bought the game to be captains too. There might be a few people that have real hard-ons for navigation or something, but no one's going to want to do the poo poo-tier work he thinks they'll be up for. If you really want to get a concentrated dose of this guys' superiority complex, just read the very last paragraph, where he complains that the Yacht ship has two glasses of wine next to the bed, because it suggests that the pilot he hired gets to drink wine instead of just him.
|
![]() |

When you play Star Citizen, who will you be? The pilot who drinks wine in bed while being piloted between systems in his space sports car? Or the pilot he hired, watching stars go by as another actual player drinks virtual wine in virtual bed behind you? Truly, this is why we play video games.

I would not be surprised if they try to force mechanics from that game into Star Citizen given their past track record. ALL they had to do was make a space dogfighting game. The big reason why they always say more people doesn't help is because of that, integrating new people into a team can take time and lots of effort. Counterpoint: Ion Storm also made Deus Ex. (yeah I know it was a separate team in a different city so it doesn't count but NYEEEEH)

Point 4: if the game does come out, it will have to either appeal to new players by dropping prices on ships/making them reasonably attainable, thereby pissing off the whales they've catered to in the past, or alienate new players by continuing to serve the whales and keep their ships exclusive, hamstringing new player growth and locking most of the games content behind the biggest paywall in gaming. Seriously. How are they going to tackle this issue? The only way out of it I can see is to continue doing what they're doing - never, ever release.

Hilarious that any of the people in that thread think that insurance isn't just another way to suck money out of them when persistence hasn't even BEGUN to be implemented yet. No one, including the developers, has any idea if an insurance system will actually be a good idea and fit into the games design because none of it has been designed...! When (well, if) they actually implement this, it will likely be radically different from the way everyone conceives of it. Again they'll have to choose between attracting new players and not alienating the whales with sunk costs, so the best option is to never finish it and just keep wringing money out of the whales!

I don't really see the point in asking SC Reddit even common sense questions about how the game will play, seeing as none of them have any idea due to none of the relevant systems being more than an empty promise currently. Until the game has actual structure and persistence (lol, "until") they think the game will play like the amazing, perfect one they've built in their mind, and no one will tell them different.

Lol, "in the game that only exists in my head it's not progression because I said so", pretty much. This one is even more fascinating to me: ![]() 1. He's literally saying "I want to progress without having the work at it like everyone else" 2. He thinks he's going to "create content" for other players, ok buddy 3. He wants to "sightsee with his honey" and I think he might actually mean ingame It's amazing how all of them seamlessly bounce back and forth between "it's not skipping grinding to become powerful!" and outright stating "I'm doing it because I want to pay instead of grinding to be powerful".

They're not wrong, you're explicitly stating here that you're concern trolling them. The $10 barrier to entry to see this forum does not exactly make it exclusive. I don't really see the point of touching the poop. Left to their own devices they'll argue with each other over what they want the game to be, which I find MUCH more amusing than giving them a common enemy by actually engaging with them.

Almost without exception when an MMO guild says they're "exclusive" and "value quality over quantity" it means "we have very few members despite our best efforts and will accept literally anyone". God I don't miss being in MMO guilds. The best experiences I had were goon guilds, because they threw out all that pretense - we knew we were all there only because of mutual membership on a gay dead forum and that's it.
