Most of the time this was things like waxes and cutting fluids, some solvents, but the old meat processing plants were some of the dirtiest. Reclaiming meat was one of the high points because they could actually put a cost on the proteins and fats that got washed off the previous processing ~ they go through a chlorine process to clean it ~ rather than just dumping it down the drain. Win/win. That was fun. One of the earliest requirements for that job was a macerator pump that could take a whole chicken.

I got out of that poo poo when I had to check out a maltings sump at Carlsberg Tetley; most people are aware of cave ecosystems and reef ecosystems, but you can get some interesting food webs setup inside of man-made food production facilities that starts with slime molds.
