The Gambia's dictator just lost an election after ruling for 22 years and has conceded defeat. Like most dictators he ended up in power after a coup

This guy lost

This is good because Jammeh was really fixated on executing gays, perhaps this new guy will moderate that to prison instead or something.

Im glad my instant dislike in you has been validated again and again.
so whats the backround of all this. my lovely surface level understanding is that some dickhead strongman who has ruled gambia forever just got voted out and now people are worried if he will step down or not.

he's actually conceded the election so maybe he's just decided to take the money and run

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/dec/02/the-gambia-president-jammeh-concede-defeat-in-election

there have been other elections before but there were always a bunch of candidates who split the vote while all the parties this time got behind 1 person. last election was 1994 lol

qaddafi was 27 when he took over. fidel was 33 when he won the rev. nasser was about the same.

having a revolution/coup is probably the most effective way to get leaders who arent ancient

Born in 1965 near the eastern market town of Basse, Mr Barrow moved to London in the 2000s where he reportedly used to work as a security guard at an Argos catalogue store.

He returned to The Gambia in 2006 to set up his own property company, which he still runs today.

Mr Barrow, who is leading an opposition coalition of seven parties, has promised to revive the country's struggling economy, look at imposing a two-term presidential limit and introduce a three-year transitional government.

Despite a surge of support for an opposition broadly united behind one candidate, most people expected the status quo to prevail.

Hopes weren't high for a peaceful transfer of power, with a crackdown on opposition leaders months before the polls, the banning of international observers or post-election demonstrations, and then the switching off of the internet on election day.

im guessing everything will be fine forever

switching off the internet on election day is actually an amazing way to get people to vote though

There was a guy who led a coup in Sierra Leone at, like, 24. Well, it was less of a coup a more of a bunch of army mans showing up at the presidential palace to demand their paycheck and getting handed the keys to the country, but it worked!
