Based on everything I've heard, it's the opposite. The general public thinks running higher octane ( 91 instead of 87 ) is on general better. Even though the ECU has no idea what to do with the extra octane.

Right, but Godholio doesn't have an ECU, or factory hardened valve seats for that matter. And since the question was specifically about which things you don't do, I was wondering what the gently caress. It reads like he goes against common idiot practice by sticking to what the manual says, which is probably like 100 octane leaded or some poo poo. I tried looking it up, but I guess my google-fu is weak today.

Ah, my bad. Totally misread that.

There have been a few octane boosters in the past couple years that have come out that can do a decent job of recreating 100 leaded out of mid 90's pump gas. It's that what you've ended up using?

If we're actually talking about me, I just use 91 (we get 85, 88, 91 here due to elevation). Leaded vs unleaded is a non-issue unless you're into some serious heavy-duty applications. In a SBC/BBC/etc valve seat lubrication is a virtual non-issue that gets blown WAY out of proportion. I actually checked what my manual says, it's just "premium" no listed octane rating, and 91 has been working great since I found someone who actually knows how to rebuild a Holley properly. At 10.5:1 compression my 327 is hardly a unicorn motor. I'd like to try some high-test stuff, but I'm out in the sticks and I can't even get ethanol-free gas anymore without a 4-hour drive each way.

When I answered that question I was really just thinking about idiots paying for premium when 85/87 is all their car wants or needs.

You say that, but I pulled the original heads off of my C10 in 2002. They'd received a valve job around 1990 (timing gear failure) but did not get hardened seats at the time, and had been run pretty much exclusively on unleaded since. The valves had recessed so far into the heads that any sort of work to rebuild them would've cost more than a set of brand new L31 Vortecs. So I bought those instead :getin:
