My m20 rebuild is nowhere near as exciting (or as expensive) as this thread. I'm doing the same level of rebuild - top and bottom refresh - with some mild upgrades but I'm not as reckless with my money. Still into it over 5 grand and I'm hoping for 160whp, which is depressing. But it should be a drat sight better than the 109whp it put down before I started in on it. edit: New page, new video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_8pvtmy9lqA charliemonster42 fucked around with this message at 04:47 on Jul 27, 2017 |

I also own an airplane, so I feel I'm fully qualified to talk about being reckless with money. And thanks, hopefully I won't need it, but every little bit helps. As to why I'm into it so much, that's just how it goes. Between megasquirt, a cam, HD rocker arms, and the wideband O2 I'm at $1800 alone. Once you add in oversized pistons and all the machine work to fit them and balance all the bottom end components (crank, flywheel, pressure plate, m52 rods, harmonic balancer, etc.) you're into it another $1400. And then add in a clutch kit, bearings, gaskets, timing belt kit, chase bays power steering hose kit, rod bolts, and all sorts of other little bits and pieces and it adds up in a serious hurry. As HandlingByJebus is finding out, just to a whole different order of magnitude. Edit: I guess that's more of the how I spent that much. The why is because I wanted to. I had an m52b28 for it that was mostly ready but I just didn't want to deal with the hassle of BAR and all that. Plus I prefer the way the m20 sounds. charliemonster42 fucked around with this message at 16:37 on Jul 27, 2017 |

Nah man, N52 is the future of a proper E30, if you want to stay with a BMW motor. Lighter than an aluminum block motor, more power.

Just get a later N52 with the better headbolts. I'm pretty sure I have the head of an aluminum headbolt floating around in my sump right now.

My wife and I have had a bit of a side project on the go for the past few weeks, which kept me from working on the parts of the Z4M that I could technically have been moving forward lately. Some of you may be aware that I built a sidecar rig for my wife for her 40th birthday. You may therefore also be aware that the motorcycle suffered a catastrophic metallurgical failure early this year, and that the sidecar was wrecked. Thankfully my wife was mostly ok (and is fine now); we've been chatting for awhile about what to do with the sidecar. A few weeks ago, she was looking at it and asked "what if we turned it into a rocketship for your sister's kids?" and a new project was born. Took off stuff that didn't need to be there anymore: After my wife did some research and sorted out the target aesthetic, we ordered some stuff from eBay, Amazon, etc.: Fabricated a dash panel out of a chunk of the wrecked fender: Re-purposed some old wheel covers that were decorating the garage: Cut some big ol' holes in the aluminum sidecar: Mounted the dash panel and started cutting on it: Used a go-kart steering column, bushings, and wheel: Got everything other than the fins assembled: Hauled the thing 350 miles north to my sister's place to deliver it and have a visit, after my wife primed / painted the worst bits and applied decals. Did the final assembly here: It's been a pretty big hit. Not posting pics of the kids out of respect for my sister's wishes. All of the adults want to climb into it and make whooshing noises though, which feels like we nailed it.

In case anyone is wondering, here's how far I am into this engine (not including wear item replacement / preventative maintenance, such as gaskets, timing chain, VANOS crap, etc; also not including things like heater core delete plugs): Engine shop: $5,200 Headwork (hot tank cleaning, intake / exhaust porting, valve deshrouding / bowl porting, valve guide / seal replacement, assembly) Bottom end (disassembly, block decked 0.004" along with timing cover, rotating assembly balance, 0.020" overbore with torqueplate, shortblock assembly, repainted black) Main bearings JE 0.020" over 11.5:1 pistons Oil pump inspection 8qt break-in oil Cam bearings: $430 (I'm ignoring the first set, because ffffffffuuuuu) Rods: $695 Valves / springs / retainers / guides / seals: $1,800 Cams / rockers: $2,600 Total: $10,725 Seems pretty reasonable for a 400WHP N/A build on an S54. Obviously I've got a lot of work to do to make it a running engine again, but I wasn't expecting this to come in under $15k. And yeah, I'm a lot more into this build when you count everything else, but just for the longblock, I'm kind of shocked at how... I have become numb to very large numbers and this doesn't seem insane.

I have had this thread bookmarked but let it build up a month worth of posts because being left blue sucks but now thank you for the sweet pics. This is one of the coolest builds I have watched. That S54 is going to be completely mental to wind out. With the mods you have done are you going to stick with the stock 8K RPM redline? That thing will probably go into the fourth dimension.

I'll be taking lots of photos during engine assembly, fabrication of the cooler supports / rad support replacement, oil system creation, etc. - should be lots of porn in this thread over the next couple of months. Even just looking at the porting / polishing / deshrouding work on the head makes my knees weak. I am planning a 9kRPM redline (highest the stock ECU will support) for this build. I expect it to go (and sound) like a loving rocketship.

Some progress today. Installed the oil pump back on the block and finally captured that lovely blue of the crank: But then I realized that the shop hadn't re-installed the oil pickup support brackets, which locate to the main bearing cap bolts (sigh). Called them, they told me "60 ft-lbs, re-lube with ARP lube, it'll be fine". Tried that. Result: Hmm. That doesn't line up. Why? Oh, poo poo. Because torquing the nuts deformed the brackets. That means that all the torque didn't go into the nuts, which means that the mains don't have enough clamping pressure on them. Called ARP, we decided that the best thing to do is to sandwich the bracket between washers (so: main bearing cap, washer, bracket, washer, nut) in order to keep the friction / twist out of the bracket. I'm really surprised that I can't find anything on the Internets about this, seems like I wouldn't be the first person to encounter and / or care about this issue. Maybe everybody else is just putting the washer over the bracket? Maybe that would actually be fine? ARP tech support didn't seem to think so. That means I need 4 more ARP washers. gently caress. Stole two from one of the caps, got one bracket installed, and it didn't deform any more. Hooray! Now waiting on a 10-pack of the correct washers (note: ARP makes a lot of M10 washers) from Amazon, arriving Monday. Next, I spent two and a half loving hours replacing the VANOS oil pump disc. No photos. I had to chase springs and caps around my garage more than once this afternoon. Finally got that poo poo installed though. I cannot believe how much play there is between the oil pump drive tabs on the cam hub and the stock pump disc. There's practically none with the Beisan unit. I feel very good about this upgrade. Tomorrow, motorcycle ride with my wife. Sunday, hopefully finish up the VANOS stuff and test-assemble the head, so I can determine if any of the shims required to get appropriate clearance will end up being under the top of the retainer (this would be Very Bad, and the good folks at Achilles were quite emphatic that the smart money does this with the head still off so it's easy to get back to the machine shop). I'll be spending a lot of time in the garage this month, since my wife is out on a series of motorcycle trips for most of it. So nice to be wrenching on this project again. e: s/bucket/retainer/ HandlingByJebus fucked around with this message at 03:56 on Aug 5, 2017 |
