Your cellphone, tablet, and iDevices are not computers. Check out the Inspect Your Gadgets forum.
In an effort to make the Haus of Tech Support a nicer place with fewer stupid questions, we've put together a new list of HOTS-specific rules. Us mods will be spending more time in HOTS from now on, too, so please read these over.
- Search Google. If your problem can be solved by doing a simple Google search and clicking on a match on the first page of results, your thread will be gassed.
- Call the relevant technical support service if your issue pertains to something Internet people probably can't help you with (e.g. your Internet connection isn't working). Use your own judgment there, but sometimes tech support folk are helpful and will fix your problem.
- Use the following template for all tech support request threads. Simply cut and paste the following into your post and change the bits that aren't bold-tagged:
quote:
Problem description: Provide a DETAILED description of your problem here.
Attempted fixes: What have you tried to do to resolve the problem?
Recent changes: Have you made any changes to your system/configuration recently that might have caused the problem?
--
Operating system: e.g. Windows Vista (Home Basic/Home Premium/Business/Ultimate), Windows XP (Home/Pro), MacOS X, Linux, etc. Also specify whether your OS is 32-bit or 64-bit, you can check this in Windows Vista/7 by going to Control Panel, System, and looking at the "System Type" line.
System specs: Machine manufacturer/model number. If a laptop, post the FULL model number, which is usually on a sticker on the underside of the machine. Please also include the basic specs such as processor and how much memory you have. If home-built, list your processor, motherboard, graphics card, memory, power supply, hard drive(s), etc. If any other hardware or equipment is relevant to your problem, list it here. If you have a networking issue, post the brand/model/revision of your modem and router from the underside of the boxes. Don't just post the output of a program that claims to show your computer specs, like Speccy, as they are frequently wrong and don't provide enough information (though this is better than nothing if you truly have no idea).
Location: What country are you in?
I have Googled and read the FAQ: Yes/No
- Post your own thread. Please don't post your issue in an existing thread, even if you think it's related.
- If you have a malware issue, try to add a HijackThis log to the template. The log will help us determine what's on your computer.
- Say thanks if someone solves your problem. People who help out in HOTS don't get paid; if you want them to keep doing it, at least thank them for their help. It also helps other people if you're clear about what fixed your problem.
- Please don't contact the mods or SH/SC regulars for tech support unless you're willing to pay for it.
Note: Don't try to use SpeedFan to look at temperatures or voltages, the values it shows are not real (it just shows uncalibrated values for whatever sensors it finds, which are almost always wrong.)
