"Certainly," he says. He escorts you with them to the jail. The guard allows you to watch them overnight, and in the morning they "testify" to the magistrate. "We all know we're not getting out of this alive. Die with dignity," the leader says to them as he is led off first. "Father is watching. You will suffer if you fail him." They are led before the black robed magistrate one by one. The leader refuses to speak, as do most of the underlings. Even the watchman from the camp remains silent, having accepted his fate." The only ones to confess are minions from the caravan attack that did break, who essentially repeat what they told you--they joined because they were scared and didn't know what they were getting into, and that their goal is to resurrect some nebulous "father" The magistrate sentences each one to death immediately after their testimony, and they are to be hanged by the end of the week for their crimes.

"Thank you for putting your lives on the line for this," the magistrate says. "Here is the bounty that was placed on them," he says as gives you a bag with 1800gp total (300gp split six ways).

Evanor summons you at noon to meet him at 6 bells. He has the same table reserved for you in the back of the White Wing Inn as he did the last time you met. The inn is again bustling, the dining area full and the bar elbow to elbow. Once you're all filed in and seated, he greets you. "I see that you all have returned, and I hear your operation was a resounding success. As promised, here is your reward," he says, pulling six velvet bags out of his satchel, handing them to each of you individually. He continues, "I gather that they are cultists attempting to bring some "father" back to life? Were you able to get more out of them than they told that magistrate?"

Each bag contains 20pp (2000gp).

"We have what looks like written orders to the group's leader, discovered among his belongings." Nodding meaningfully towards Asar, she continues. "Asar says he might be able to use it to find whoever wrote it , but he can explain that part better."

People in the Ward are in a panic, wondering if they could be next. It has... concerned my patron as it was, and with this news, I'm sure he will be most disquieted. Damaia Fireheart

"I do not know. Is the message you seek to send that those who cooperate with the Deathstalkers will meet that very death themselves? But they do not seem to trumpet their nature quite so easily when they recruit from the downtrodden. Those dark waters rise ever so slowly, creeping up night by night. The waters may reach your waist, your chest, your neck before you realize you should have escaped but by that point who would you turn to, how would you leave, and where would you go? The Deathstalkers prey on those who have been outcast and isolate them further, so when they discover who their benefactors are, where can they turn? Their ties to their old lives have been severed, to voice any disagreement with the Deathstalkers is to invite destruction... and to throw themselves upon the mercies of Waterdeep's Justice will invite the same.

Will they not fight to the death then at every opportunity, knowing that they doomed in every outcome save absolute loyalty to their fallen lord? Can this not be used to strong-arm any hesitant converts into taking even darker actions once they know that there is neither escape nor salvation on the road they have taken? When we answer bloodshed with bloodshed whose will will we serve? Is this justice, Lord Magistrate?"

She pauses in contemplation.

"I am no barrister or Magistrate versed in the laws of Waterdeep, merely one who is concerned with helping and protecting others. Though some of these cultists may be fully enthralled and ready to perish in the name of their lord, I am loathe to send them to meet him just yet. We still do not know the mechanism by which they believe he will return- they sought to sow chaos and death in his name and I fear that fallen worshipers will still lend strength in some way.

I would try to help those who could be helped, save those who could still be saved. Find those who would be willing to meet with these prisoners, talk to them, learn about them and find out who among them is willing to learn, understand, reform and cooperate. If we understand how they were targeted then we can better track down the cells that remain in this city. I am unsure as to how they may make amends for their crimes... Waterdeep is still the City of Coin, but while destroyed property can be compensated, neither blood nor coin will bring back lives lost. The best I can do is try to ensure that these things don't happen again. If Justice holds in the city then the cultists we have captured will be unable to harm its citizens, but alive there may be some among them still capable of doing good, while their deaths may only provide fuel for these dark machinations."

Maerwen grits her teeth to maintain some control over herself. Not that she particularly cares what happens to the prisoners, or what the magistrate's opinion was, but the amount of effort Damai was putting into her case was setting her on edge. As soon as she closes her arguments, Maerwen leans over and provides some insight in a hushed tone.

"My dear, as a person who is quite familiar with the workings of the Waterdhavian justice system, I suggest you let this go - whatever the decision may be. If these souls are to be put to death, then it will be done. All this argument will do is make the days prior to their execution that much more...uncomfortable, shall we say."

Maerwen looks upon Evanor blithely. "To what background are you referring? By virtue of my blood, it goes without saying that I can see why someone would seek to attack Waterdeep. We are quite the valuable target."

All of the defendants out of the room by now, the magistrate hesitates for a moment in thought. "I suppose we can grant a temporary stay of execution while we investigate this matter further. I cannot promise you that they will not meet their fate eventually, though, but when they do we will afford them a chance to redeem themselves before a cleric of Amaunator. And they will under no circumstances be freed. Whatever reasons they had, what they have done is unforgivable. They have murdered tens of people, and setting anyone who participated free would set a dangerous precedent that you can get away after being caught red handed committing mass murder if you have a good story." He stops for a second before adding, "I do find it interesting that you care so much to defend the lives of even these vile terrorists. You would make a good lawyer, if you decide to hang your sword up one day. And I don't mean that in a negative manner.."

It was not the most ideal decision, but it would have to do for now.

Back with the others, Damaia decides to set aside her concerns and focus on the task at hand.

"If we're investigating the South Ward, there's a few things to keep in mind. It's a central hub for the trade caravans that visit Waterdeep, and is full of the merchants and guilds that do business with them, with plenty of forges, stables, inns, taverns and warehouses. The constant traffic means plenty of noise and dust, and it's home to the cheapest tenements in the city, which gives the Deathstalkers plenty of options for either recruitment or sacrifice victims with no one to look after them. Even cries for help can be swallowed up between the background noise and the distortion of the twisting alleys.

Then there's still the regular criminal element to deal with, so keep your eyes open and try not to look like either a tempting target or someone who's trying to hard to not look like a tempting target. We may be investigating the murders, but we can still look for any leads on their recruitment efforts... I want to keep the people of Waterdeep out of their hands in any way possible. And I might have a few ideas about where to start..."

As long as we don't get in their way, they won't bother us. Besides, we're armed well enough. Most of us, anyway. They're likely to choose easier target." She pats her sword belt. Most of the murders seems to be happening deep in the residential areas of the Ward. You hear word that a murder actully happened last night on Poaga Street, deep in the center of the Ward. The Watch still haven't finished cleaning up the scene. While poking around, you also find out that some... odd... people have been hanging out in the taverns in the poorer sections of the ward, pulling aside people who look particularly down on their luck. The Southern Serpent, the Blind Bull are two that you have heard about in specific, both of which are in the poorest sections of the city, and would be rife with people looking for fresh starts.

On the desk, the letter. And a map of the Sword Coast. Circles around Waterdeep, around Baldur's Gate, around Neverwinter. A young elf in street clothes comes through the door. You hand him the note. He nods his head. "At once, master," he says as shoves the letter in his satchel and turns to leave.

2. A dark, rainy day. You leave the middle aged human with black hair and dark brown eyes in his office and turn to head out of the basement, out of the unmarked, abandoned storefront and along Formosa Way to deliver the letter.

3. The Southern Serpent. A seedy tavern, in the worst part of town. On the corner, a man stands hawking illicit powders. You enter and head to the back. "Master bade me to give this to you," you say to the tall elf, sitting with his staff leaning on the table. "Many thanks. Give Master Nevin my assurance that the mission will be completed with perfection."

4. A nice, sunny day. two of your away team stagger up to you. ""My brethren... we have failed," the first says. Then an explanation. Then chaos. Then black. Then bindings, a traitor, and a warning.

5. Cold. Dark. A prison cell. In your hand, a shiv. Blood. Blood everywhere. Soaking the cold, stone floor. And a body. The one who talked. Punctured tens of times, lying lifeless on the ground. You shove the shiv into the center of his chest one last time and leave it there, sticking out like a barren flagpole in a battlefield drenched in blood. You stare at your cellmates. "Those who betray Father shall meet their fate," you say.

So, remembering where they operated most could save them a lot of trouble while they looked for the Deadstalkers. Or, potentially, give them sources for information.

Of all the revelations, the worst was learning that one of the prisoners had been murdered. Another life lost, and with it any hope for improvement, vanished into the black morass that marked the grave of the Lord of Murder. A wretched tragedy... and could she have prevented it had she retained the foresight to ask to keep them separated?

As they make their way to the South Ward, Damaia recalls what she can about the Southern Serpent and the surrounding area from the time she'd spent in and around that part of the Ward. For all of the people she'd met and the friends she'd made, the poverty and bleak decay meant that you always had to watch your tail for acts of malice or desperation.

It would be relatively easy to find criminals sprinkled around the South Ward, whether selling drugs (particularly Lich Dust--a highly addictive powder that can be snorted or smoked) on street corners or making backdoor deals in the taverns, fueling a silent Lich Dust epidemic that no noble wants to talk about. There tends to be more criminal activity in the heart of the Ward, which tends to be poorer than the rest. With your senses and... experience... you should have no trouble spotting someone involved in... less than legal activities, and be able to speak to them without immediately coming off as someone working for nobility.

You recall that the Souther Serpent in particular has strong drug ties, and that the area around it is rife with dealers, though now is much worse than ever before, the minor problem having blown up into a full on epidemic. You don't recall word of any cult activities from your time in the Ward, though times have obviously changed.

You blend in perfectly at the bar, and are able to proceed as you wish.

The strongest! The smartest!
The rightest!

Asar Raxia

Asar follows into the tavern, but without the dramatic clothing shifting. The nice thing about comfortable robes is that they do, in fact, blend in everywhere. And they were also, you know, comfortable.

Besides. In THIS part of town, two tieflings actually are less suspicious then just one. The cleaner and less shady you look, the more obvious it was you were a cop, after all.

He leans in to whisper, hoping this just makes him look even more unsuspiciously suspicious.

"What are we looking for here?"

Lander county's safe as heaven,
despite all the strife and boilin',
Tin Star,
Oh how she's an icon of the eastern west,
But now the time has come to end our song,
of the Tin Star, the Tin Star!

Iszera

"Of course"

Taking a look around, Iszera looked for people that looked like they might know something about their Deathstalker quarry.

As you walk in the tavern, you notice that it is only about half full. The room is dark and the floors are sticky and many tables sit dirty, stacked with plates and mostly empty steins. You see the bartender talking to a couple half lit dwarves at the bar, while in the back corner, a human in a red cloak speaks to two alert looking half elves with shortswords hanging from their waists. You watch the half elves speak to the human and see them exchange some bags, the half elves giving the human a coinpurse and receiving a sealed waterproof bag roughly the size of a brick. They shake hands, and the half elves stand up to leave (streetwise: this is an obvious drug deal, most likely for lich dust, and a large quantity at that. Judging by the quantity, the half elves are probably dealers, not end users). As the half elves begin to leave the bar, an elf wearing a cloak with the hood drawn up and carrying a dark leather messenger bag walks in and heads towards the corner that the human is in.

Damaia takes note of the two half-elves, but while they represent a threat to her community, they would have to wait for a moment. The meeting with the courier could be important, and she needed to find a good vantage point. Fortunately, she happened to know a thing or two about tavern acoustics, and it was trivial for her to lead Asar to a private table, where the two could order a few drinks, huddle conspiratorially and look for all the world like a pair of tieflings more concerned about their own private subterfuge rather than the dealings of anyone else in the tavern.

There is no escape.

Charity

Charity takes a place at the bar, quietly ordering a drink for herself. She doesn't look around, but turns casually to keep an eye on the door. The drug deal wasn't a big deal, right now - they were here for other things - but if need be, she could sit down with the dealer and ask him some stuff. With her ale in hand, though, she seems perfectly at home in this dump. And why shouldn't she be? Taverns like these were her home turf back when she was still alive. It feels good to be back, in a way.

Nice guy.
Tries hard.
Loves hot dogs The Game.

Maerwen Ruldegost

Maerwen finds herself to be intensely uncomfortable in the tavern. There was most certainly some sort of unsavory business occurring, though its nature wasn't immediately obvious to her - nor did she want it to be. She obtains the best wine she is able, although it is still subpar compared to what she was used to. She makes herself as comfortable as she can in an obscure corner, where she is able to remain attentive to the goings-on around her but avoid possible recognition.

You are able to subtly sit down and listen in on the conversation. The courier sits down at the table with the human. "A note, from Master," the courier says as he pulls a sealed envelope out of his satchel. He hands it over to the still seated human, who responds, "Thank you, dear brother." He pulls out the pouch the half elves just handed him and takes out roughly half of the coins, placing them in a separate coin purse that he hands to the elf before stating, "Here are the proceeds from today so far. I still have another deal scheduled this evening as well. Let Master know that our funding is stable at the moment." The elf responds, "Thank you. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to speak to Sister Trela." "Certainly. Fairwell, brother, and tell Trela I said hello," the human replies. With that, the elf stands up and walks towards the door of the tavern to leave.

An interesting conversation, to be sure. Now, who might this Sister Trela be?
