Citadel the Comic Book: the Game

High in the mountains, where few dare to travel, lies an ancient gate that few know how to open. Beyond this gate lies the Citadel.

An ancient castle surrounded by treacherous mountain passes, to most. But to others, to superheroes, it was known as a school. A neutral school where supers could send their children to learn and develop their powers before being thrust into the real world. Initially, it was set up by the Knights of the Citadel to protect their children from an immense alien army, but after the Xyloths were initially defeated, the sanctuary transitioned into a home-away-from-home for many of the children there.

Twenty years have passed since then. The second war with the Xyloths has ended. But victory came at a terrible price. Many lives were lost, and the Citadel itself—leveled.

The biggest change, however, was simply called The Reset. A Xylothian Doomsday device, the aliens’ final, last-ditch effort to win the war, was set off. Intended to wipe out all of humanity, it would have worked if not for the sacrifice of many brave Knights that threw themselves into the device’s engine. The device’s explosion sent shock waves across the planet, but failed its evil purpose.

The Xyloths defeated, Earth and its Knights settled into a period of peace. However, it was soon discovered that the Doomsday device’s effect wasn’t totally negated. Heroes around the world began sensing their powers beginning to lessen, and soon fail altogether.

With the Knights’ sudden loss in power, chaos descended upon the planet. Before all was lost, they came up with one last plan to set things right. The Knights wiped out all memories of their own existence, and that of the Xyloths. Then, their work done, they faded back into living normal lives, as the last of their powers finally faded away.

Or so they thought...

Almost a decade later, powers started coming back. Not to all, and not in the same magnitude, but slowly, some of the old Knights regained some elements of their powers. Together, they moved to rebuild the Citadel, but resources remain scarce, and without knowledge of the Xylothian Wars, governments are wary to trust the Knights.

What’s more, but teenagers around the globe are awakening to all-new powers. The Citadel is moving as quickly as it can to recruit them, but governments and corporations are moving just as fast to secure them for their own means. And somewhere on the horizon, a new threat is growing...

Previous, on Citadel

The students of the rebuilding Citadel (Bones, Momo, Elf-Max, Obsidian, and more) helped break up an attack on Central City by the nefarious Nazi Crocodile! But... when the team arrived home, a mysterious mask made its presence known, and according to the time-lost Elf-Max, the mask belonged to one of the original enemies (and founders!) of the Citadel - The Black Mask! A reformed team now sets out to discover the origins of the mask.

Meanwhile, two new vigilantes are stepping up their game, investigating a mysterious occurrence on the outskirts of Central City. Both groups' paths now collide - at the Halcyon Coasters amusement park!

Halcyon Coasters

Night begins to fall as the rickety chopper approaches Halcyon Coasters, but the dusk is soon replaced by bright, neon lights and joyous screams, undercut by the everpresent circus music of the theme park. It's a relatively new park, but recent investments from an unknown person (or unknown persons) has seen it skyrocket in popularity, with ads on every other network channel and a few dozen endorsements scattered throughout media and sports. Still, there's no beating honest-to-goodness fun, and what the park lacks in transparency, it makes up for in variety - with eye-popping coasters, fantastical rides, and games galore. Not to mention, a top-of-the-line restaurant broken up into the three various sections.

As the chopper starts to land, you can spot some sort of security officer standing on the helipad. She frowns as the vehicle sets down, then motions for you all to step off. "Hi," she states flatly, "I'm Security Chief Monoka. You must be the kids from Citadel."

Security Chief Mariko Monoka

She escorts you through the back offices of the theme park and out onto the concourse proper. Hundreds of visitors rush past you in just about every direction. Monoka stops you, turning to look at Bones.

Bones: Okay - it's your first mission in charge. How do you feel about being named the team captain? Has Momo said anything to you about it? Do you think she likes it? And... what do you ask Security Chief Monoka? What do you most want to know about Halcyon Coasters? How do you plan on succeeding in this mission?

Momo: Hmm... back at Halcyon Coasters. What crazy thing happened here the last time you were here? Or, if you've never been here - why not? It's a pretty cool place! Anyways... your relationship with Bones really got serious quickly, huh? How does that make you feel? How does it make you feel when you see the effort he's making? Are you afraid of letting him down?

Obsidian: Another day - another mission. What are you most worried about happening here? What are you most worried that you could do that would happen here? Are you afraid of blowing everything up like with Nazi Croc? And by the way... what about Chief Monoka strikes you as wrong? What is offputting about her, and why does that put you on edge? Do you say something about it?

Max: This mask thing has hit you hard personally. What about Black Mask was it that always scared you? What do you think of the possibility of him being back? And... if he's not back, who do you think could be doing something like this? Also... what do you see suddenly that reminds you of "the other side?" Do you think it's actually from the elven realm, or just a good simulacrum?

--

Elsewhere, two girls are walking through the food court, enjoying the night air and a good snack after a long day of watching and waiting. And nothing happening! Well - lots of things happening: fun rides, greasy food, good company, etc. But no bad things. So now you're just walking around with the park closing soon. The fireworks show starts soon, right?

Nightshade: So, has this "date-o" lived up to its expectations? What was your favorite part of the day spent sleuthing? Was there any moment where you two butted heads? Oh, and... are you worried that whatever's going on might have something to do with your old crowd? Who in particular? What could they be up to?

Godfish, make sure to roll for Friends in low places

Mirror Blade: How does this feel, being among "regular people," spending the day doing just... fun things? Do you feel like one of them, or like a complete alien? Does it make you feel depressed about... the future? About the possibility of losing it all? Wait! No time to answer all that (but please really do) Whoa! What the gently caress is that thing?! And why is it attacking those people?!

Bone's eyes snapped open, the helicopter rattled around him. It was cute that the tech students were helping to build some of the transport that the students were now getting to use. With that being the case he questioned why they had to use this rickety second hand Russian black market bucket of bolts.

Probably to blend in. God knows the looks they'd get if they arrived in a souped up anti-grav speeder v-tol.

He shifted his bones about try try and get a more comfortable position. Looking out the window as the park grew closer. God this was a weird mission.

"Hey team! Go investigate the creepy black shadow mask, where are we going? loving Halcyon Coasters, of course! Because that makes sense!" He muttered under his breath. Bones wasn't going to lie, he felt nervous about this. Thank god Momo had been helping him practice his ectoplasmic disguise, he wasn't in the mood for the kind of reaction a skeleton walking about would bring. Even so, he'd brought his new heavy hoody, just in case. Another fine thing Momo had helped him with. A present, after his last one had been shredded fighting that Nazi Croc.

Momo...

He looked across to his girlfriend. He rolled the idea around in his head. It was a strange feeling. A kinda sweet bubbly breathless feeling. Like falling into candyfloss. Jesus she looked cute in the light's of the park as they approached. Hell, she'd looked cute in the dim light of the flight the whole way. Okay fine, she was loving gorgeous all the time. It was a serious struggle trying to remember he was responsible for all these guys, and not just focus on her. But somehow he managed it. Somehow. At least he knew that Momo had no issue with it. As he'd been finding out, Momo liked it when he took charge of their dates.

He shook his head, banishing the thought for the moment. The copter was starting to land. He hurridly reached across the vale, coxing the ectoplasm to cover his bones. He even took a few moments to make sure his face was set right. Even so, he put his hood up. Hopping off and onto the hellipad at the first chance he breathed in deeply. The Loa here were active. No wonder. They loved a party, and this place was a party 24/7. The whole place felt thick with excitement, with a subtle unsettling undercurrent of mild terror. It took him a few seconds to focus on the living world, and the sturn looking woman staring dead at him.

"We're from the Citadel, yes." He responded. Leaving the 'kids' part out. Bones was used to people looking down on him. Still pissed him off though. 'Off to a great start' he thought.

"I'm Bones. Team Lead. I'll need park maps, lists of any events you've got planned and their timings, including any performer appearances. Oh and any record of any strange unexplained events you've got." He gave her a toothy grin.

Okay, it wasn't a question. But he'd hate to confuse one of the performers for a bad guy and punch him through a wall. So it seemed like a fair, and professional request. Plus her response would at least give him a better idea of how she thinks of them.

Frankly he didn't know where to start looking into this whole Mask thing, but Max should be able to point them in the right direction. Then they just had to solve everything without blowing the park up.

Black Mask is terrifying because he is proof positive that the Boogeyman exists. Black ops, black bag, black hat? Black Mask. Of course, everyone knows that. Everyone who remembers him, anyway, and there's enough Dread Pirate Roberts-style myth-building that the uncertainty makes him scarier. There are stories from before the Reset, about him being involved with the CIA, snatching up supers and... what was that phrase Apparatchick used? 'Making them tools of the State'.

For Max, Elf-Max that is, Sir Not Appearing in This Tunic, the things he knows directly are even scarier. Sending the Talsen Trio to hypnotize the school, that one crazy night where they had to go out and rescue most of the school from him and his crew, but mostly that one kid who came to the Citadel midway through the term, the one who'd been rescued from some lab Mask had been running or something. What was his name? Had dice-o-kinesis or something, ended up hanging around with some other kids. He said they'd been doing some weird crap to him, trying to turn him into a clone of some dead villain. With the elves calling, trying to guilt him into taking up the identity of someone who'd kind-of grafted themselves into his family tree, that resonated like a big old church bell.

The mask brought all of that back, but worse, because Black Mask was not the kind of guy to ask or sigh. He'd come that close to putting it on, to putting the welcome mat out in front of his mind. Ever since, he'd kept thinking about it, the way it felt, what might have happened. Getting his head messed with until his elf-self became one of those villainesses who wears her underwear on the outside, and nothing else inside. Or just watching, and waiting, and pretending nothing was wrong.

If it wasn't him, then who? Could it have been a warning? Somebody else from before, or a possessed time capsule? Could the Talsen kids have remembered, and gone bad again? They were good at getting into people's heads, and that key reminded him as much of the mental White Rooms that Ironfeather had taught people to make --and where they had attacked her-- as it did the magic store-room Rhoswen's memories had led him to years ago.

Max rubs the key in her hip pocket, through the fabric of her tunic and trousers. The mask might have vanished, but she wasn't going to let that thing out of her sight. Figuratively. It was less uncomfortable than trying to wear it as a pendant.

The pointy-ear-pinching headphones are off as soon as the pilot indicates they've landed, and Max undoes the stays and latches with fingers that still seem to vibrate with sympathy to the rattletrap helicopter. The thing had looked unpleasant while boarding; an old Russian bird flying toward an American theme park must have looked like some weird Cold War reference.

The security head is clearly not happy to see the group, with the glare of her red eye scanning them like a checkout scanner. This Max says nothing to her, and only keeps her hands tucked politely behind her back. Time for asking what the heck someone like that is doing at a place like this, later.

That's when the pixie flits past overhead, and elf-Max just about jumps out of her skin.

When the sidhe, the elves, were pushed to the western edges of Ireland and beyond, those that remained on Earth instead of retiring to the Otherworld found themselves dwindling. Some shed their potency, exchanging grand illusions and heroic feats for parlor tricks. Others wrapped themselves around that kernel of power, shrinking in stature instead, and confusing legends of other small folk.

It's only a momentary panic. For one thing, the pixies she knows about are retiring sorts and easily overstimulated; they'd give a theme park a wide berth. Besides that, it's The Future, isn't it? That was probably a security drone or something, disguised so it blends in with the ambience.

The wink was probably just driven by a servomotor, or whatever they use these days, adding to the animatronic illusion.

Backstory
When our team first came together...
All things considered, we did well and impressed an established hero. Who was it?
Mandragon, of all people! Elf-Max was expecting him to be miffed at the gaggle of voracious new mouths to feed.

Relationships
You once got caught breaking your legacy's rules with ______________.
You trust Bones and told them an important secret of your legacy.

Influence
You're a part of this team, for better or worse, and you care what they think. Give influence to all of your teammates.

Legacy Moves

I know what I am: Once per scene, when you defend a teammate you can shift Savior up and another label down in addition to any other benefits from the move, even on a miss.

Never give up, never surrender: When you take a powerful blow, use this move
instead of the base move. Roll + Savior. On a hit, you stand strong and choose one. On a 7-9, mark a condition.
- You get an opportunity or opening against your attacker.
- You rally from the hit, and it inspires the team. Add a team to the pool.
- You keep your attacker's attention.
On a miss, you go down hard but leave your opponent off balance and vulnerable.

Legacy of the Legacy

Your legacy is an important part of Halcyon City The Citadel.
Name the different members of your legacy (at least two):
Headmaster Steele is still active and prominent.
________________________ is retired and judgmental.
________________________ is the next possible member of your legacy.
Black Cape is the greatest opponent your legacy ever faced...and is still at large. "and whatever happened to him, anyway?"

At the start of the session, roll + Savior to see how the members of your legacy feel or react to your most recent exploits. On a hit, one of them offers you meaningful encouragement, an opportunity, or an advantage. On a 7-9, another is upset with your most recent actions, and will make their displeasure known. On a miss, something you did stirred up the hornet's nest---expect several members of your legacy to meddle with your life.

Your legacy comes with traditions you're expected to uphold. At the end of each session, ask the other players to answer these questions about your performance. For each no answer, take -1 forward on your next start of session roll.
- Did you uphold the traditions of your legacy?
- Did you maintain the image of your legacy?
- Did you make the other members of your legacy proud?

Moment of Truth:

This is the moment when you prove how much the mantle belongs to you. You seize control of all your powers, and you defeat even impossible odds to prove you are a true, genuine hero. Of course, after you prove something like that, it’s going to be hard to justify going back to the Team...

Team Moves:
When you share a triumphant celebration with someone, tell them whether you see them as an equal. If you do, give them Influence over you and mark potential. If you don't, shift Superior up and any other label down.
When you share a vulnerability or weakness with someone, tell them a secret about your legacy (including your own true feelings about it) to clear a Condition and give them Influence over you.

Potential: 1/5
Every time you roll a miss on a move, mark potential.

Advancement:
When you fill your potential track, you advance. Choose from the list below. When you've taken
five advances from the top list, you can take advances from the list below the line.
__ Take another move from your playbook

__Take a move from another playbook
__ Someone permanently loses Influence over you; add +1 to a Label

To it's expectations? Not... really... The park can't be staying open too much later, it's already getting dark, and nothing has happened. I thought we'd have found something by now, or, being really optimistic, have been kidnapped ourselves even! As far as the not-actually-our-purpose-here, it's been pretty good! Mirror is cute as all hell, and we got to go on all sorts of rides, roller coasters, whatever you call those things where you get strapped in and they go straight up, hang there, and then drop. Ice cream, kettle corn, all that good stuff.

We did have a small argument about fair games though, and if using ninja skills to hit the targets perfectly with each shot was cheating or not, and then a similar fight from the opposite direction when I may have enhanced my bumper-car to dominate the arena. Which isn't cheating! It's not like I guaranteed I'd win with that, unlike what she did! Ahem. Anyway, I made it up to her by buying her a treat from the next stand we came across - I may have used magic to get it cheap enough I could afford. may have - so overall, aside from not actually doing any heroics, things are going well! The best part was definitely the water-cannon equipped bumberboats, because we both had a good time getting soaked - which has nothing to do with how good she looks in a wet shirt.

But back to business, no, I don't think this is really any of my old crew's style. I mean, Arsenal makes weapons, and she doesn't test them on people, she just tests them on, well, usually buildings. Starry Night maybe... if she needed to try out one of her new artifacts, but that doesn't sound like her either. I could see Marquise getting involved in a hands off sort of way, since she spreads out the most, but... nah, I don't think any of them would have anything to do with this. I'm sure of it.

Marquise of Kingsberry

Specialty: Intel
Obligation: 0

Marquise is, technically speaking, the muscle, because whoa is she ripped! But practically, she provided information for jobs, makes connections, using her profile as a popular boxing champion to meet people, find targets or allies. Good stuff, she hardly ever gets out there to get her hands dirty, just helps set them up or plan them, but when she does, whoa. I should note, she does not follow the Marquis of Queensberry rules when fighting outside the ring. Oh noooo.

Arsenal

Specialty: Weapons
Obligation: 2

Arsenal is the practical muscle, she's basically never got more than ten different weapons on her. She's also a genius at inventing, constantly creating or modifying guns using whatever supplies she has on hand. If you need a specific weapon, or just looking for an edge, you go to Arsenal. Taking her along for a fight is a good way to make sure nothing is standing by the end. Also, she's hilarious.

Starry Night

Specialty: Cosmic Artifacts
Obligation: 1

Starry Night is kind of weird, but cool! A little spacey - heh - and really smart. She's fascinated by inexplicable things, and I'm pretty sure the entire reason she got mixed up in the villain thing is because the government keeps anything artifacts and relics they do find under incredibly tight security, and she'd never been able to see any if she didn't get to them illegally. She's probably the world expert on this stuff, because she's spent so much time studying them, and it's... had a bit of an effect on her. She didn't used to be that... uh, ethereal? Maybe.

When you come to them for help with your problems, mark obligation on them, and they'll help out within their specialty. If all their boxes are full, then they will not help you until you help them.

At the beginning of each session, roll + your highest obligation. On a 10+, they come crashing into your life with a crisis. On a 7-9, they call for a favor. On a miss, they don’t come knocking yet, but mark obligation with them—the debts are getting heavier. When you help them with their problems, erase 2 obligation on them.

“Oop!” Ayama declared, turning the soft serve cone in her hand to press her mouth to the sagging flank of her frozen treat. She brought her lips together to smooth out the layered swirls of vanilla before running her tongue up to the melting peak of her cone. Her soft brown eyes considered her handiwork for a moment and apparently decided that the ice cream would stay upright a bit longer … the trail from the drip that had run down her palm and along her forearm, however, required a little more attention. A bit awkwardly, she turned the cone in her hand as she brought the arm up to try and lap up that little trail as well.

It wasn’t exactly the kind of coordination Mirror Blade usually displayed, but then, she had an excuse. While she was certainly enjoying the treat, almost as soon as she’d gotten it she’d peeled the paper wrapper from the cone and placed it on one of the plastic tables that dotted the food court, making a series of careful folds with one hand in between sampling the simple joys of ice cream.

She smiled faintly, watching as her thumb and forefinger pinched the thin paper. Today had been a good day, she hadn’t been to a theme park like this since her father had taken her when she was twelve, after all. The shouting of children, the glare of neon lights in the dwindling sunlight, it gave her an opportunity to reconnect with all the stuff she’d had to pack down since going on the run. To see life at ground level again, even if she was acting as bait.

Of course, it wasn’t exactly perfect. She’d was amazed at how difficult it was, simply trying to pass herself off as normal for a whole day. She felt like she’d been criss-crossing the park all day long taking tiny babysteps; her legs were aching to really cut loose, to dash across the property, hop over the low stands, and clamber up along the inside of the Ferris Wheel. She felt like a spring wound a little too tightly, and part of her was practically begging for the sun to go down so she could abandon this charade and indulge in a little infiltration and investigation of the park grounds after dark.

Still, that dull ache distracted her from the other thing. They’d had the day together, there’d been a fair number of opportunities to get close to Nightshade through the duration. The darkened halls of the haunted house, the brush of hands when they’d walked too close together, heck they’d even been locked in a cage together and sent crashing this way and that more than a few times. Still, Ayama kept pulling back. It wasn’t like she disliked the closeness … it was more that whenever she thought about pushing her luck, a few decades of kunoichi experience suddenly reared its head with all manner of unwelcome advice. Of course, now she was worried she spent the whole day sending terribly confused signals, and everything was twisted up.

Her teeth bit down into the cone, allowing her to use both hands as she tugged at it here and there. This, this was something that was hers. She knew it, because she still remembered the year her little sister had been laid up for weeks in the hospital and the two of them had spent the visiting hours of each day working their way through an origami book. Finally, she held in her palm a paper rose blossom in delicate white, albeit one with the “Halcyon Coasters” logo speckled over it.

“Hey, Shade?” she said, a bit lowly as she curled her fingers around the bit of folded paper to hide it. Days like this were precious specifically because she didn’t know how many of them she had ahead of her. She could mope about it, or she could try and pack as much meaning into the time she had as she could.

“—Uh, what’s that?” she blinked, pointing over her shoulder. A man in the uniform of the Halcyon Coasters staff turned the corner into the food court at a full run, rebounding off of the wall by the funnel cake stall at he clutched at a shoulder that was dark with blood. His panic was evident, but what he was running from took a few seconds to come into view;

Whatever it was, it was taller than a man at the shoulder and its crown of antlers should have been visible from further away than they had been. Its edges looked somehow blurry and indistinct, and there was a slight tug in the back of her mind that told her it was exerting some kind of subtle mental pressure that would make people ignore it … but still, it howled in pain and anger, claws carving through the paving stones as it pulled itself after the retreating man. Shards of strange black metal that had apparently been fashioned into daggers of some kind stuck out of its body at irregular angles, matting its coat with blood, one apparently lodged in an eye socket. The thing was probably half mad with pain, Mirror Blade doubted anyone would be safe once this thing really got going.

Of course this would happen now!

"Yeah Blade?" I turn to look behind me, following her finger. Well the obvious answer was an injured employee running, but the real answer came into a view a second later, and was a bit hard to focus on. It's a good thing she was magic, and Mirror was a teenage ninja, because otherwise they both might have missed it. "Um. Some kind of... giant mutant Jackalope, maybe?" Of all the things to be causing these disappearances... that seemed like the least likely. But hey!

"It looks like someone's attacked it already..." The Coasters Staffer? He didn't look the type. "Well, I guess this is what we're here for, right? Lets go!" I jump to my feet, waiting just long enough to make sure she's joining in with me, and let my magic swirl around me, swapping out my casual clothing for my villainheroes outfit! "Stop right there Monster! Nightshade and Mirror Blade are here to stop you!" Okay, so it needed so work, but in all my time as a villain, I never once saw a hero who didn't have some stupid intro line, and most of them were worse!

Still, I'm a little embarrassed about it now that I've used it, so to distract from that, I ignite a purple flame in my hand, and twirl it in a quick circle, fanning the fire, and then fling it right at the thing! The fire arcs through the air with an indigo streak, and balloons outwards when it hits, covering the creature in swirly purple flames, licking around it's huge body. See if it can focus on attacking anything after that! "Your turn Blade!"

"So this is a place for children, yes?" She said a bit of her accent coming through as she eyed the woman who was speaking to her. She work a hoodie with the drawstrings pulled up and her eyes glowing as she peered out at the woman with someone less than warm reception. "What could you tell us about this place?" She said skeptically. Obsidian knew that she wasn't being fair to the woman but there was an instinctive snap as if she was the cold to her hot.

Obsidian had been quiet since the incident, though she had refused to talk about it with most of the people involved she had attempted to open up once or twice but it was hard to say. It was hard to admit you over reacted when you had such good reasons too. A military unit had been dispatched and she had seen what they could do, and the Ukraine had run red with blood from similar models not to long ago. It was hardly something she wanted to relive and most of all it was something that she couldn't express to a normal person.

She already was a melting rock that happen to walk around and talk and compared to other people there was no comparison. The troubles and tribulations of growing up in a warzone is least of them. She had never been to a theme park and it seemed silly and needless in her critical eye. There was little she could relate too, but life went on.

That is one thing she learned very quickly.

quote:

Hero Name: Obsidian
Real Name: Natalka Shevchenko
Age: 17
Nationality: Ukrainian
Look: Female, Ukrainian, Volcanic flesh, work clothing, no costume

Abilities:

Elemental control - Specifically with the control of earth and magma. She is a living essence of a volcano given form. However, the other elements that oppose her are not within the realm of her control, though for Natalka that is just fine.

Burn:

When you charge up your powers, roll + conditions you currently have marked. On a hit, hold 3 burn. On a 7-9, mark a condition. On a miss, hold 2 burn and mark three conditions. Spend your burn on your flares. You lose all burn at the end of the scene

Flares:

Reality storm: You channel a destructive burst with your powers. Spend 1 burn to directly engage a threat using your powers, rolling + Freak instead of + Danger. If you do, you will cause unwanted collateral damage unless you spend another Burn.

Shielding: You call up a fast protective field to stop a danger. Spend 1 burn to defend someone else from an immediate threat, rolling + Freak instead of + Savior

Overcharge: You channel the full capacity of your incredible powers to overcome an obstacle, reshape your environment, or extend your senses. Spend 2 burn to take a 10+ when you unleash your powers.

Move: Spend 1 burn to move to any place you choose within the scene, breaking through or slipping past any barriers or restraints in your way. Spend a second Burn to move to any place you’ve previously been

Moment of Truth:

Your mind’s eye opens, and you can see the world around you like never before. You can control it, at will, with ease. Of course, warping reality tends to have ramifications down the line, but in your moment of godhood...how could you possibly be worried?

Team Moves:

When you share a triumphant celebration with someone, ask them if there is any fear in their eyes when they look at you. If they say no, take +1 forward and mark potential. If they say yes, immediately shift your Danger up and Savior down.

When you share a vulnerability or weakness with someone, tell them how they could stop you, if it came down to it. Give them Influence over you and clear a condition

“I’m not so sure it is…” Mirror Blade said pushing her seat back and clapping her palms together, “Still, it’s not like we can ignore it.”

There was a brilliant flash of light as Nightshade summoned up her battle gear, but for Mirror Blade it was a much simpler process. She laced her fingers together, leaving her thumb, fore, and middling finger extended, making seal to prod her chakra into the familiar form as she took a practiced breath.

“Forbidden Ninpo:” she barely breathed the words, but as close as she was there was a chance that Nightshade might’ve heard them over the sound of her own transformation “Mind’s Arsenal.”

There was a brief pain as the Kamishin’s Soulbending Art connected her mental energy to the much larger wellspring of her enhanced Chakra. Amaya’s soft brown eyes lit up with pink light as a faint tingling feeling began to spread across her skin. As Nightshade introduced the two of them, Mirror Blade moved, a blurry after image posing alongside her as her shadow seemed to leap out of her.

While the flare of violet fire drew the eye, a flickering shadow in the dusk light was the only thing to give Mirror Blade as she jumped over the crowd and to the roofs of the concession stands, circling around the outside in a flash. The more they’d worked together, the more natural this kind of thing felt…Nightshade made a big flashy attack while Mirror Blade moved subtly to support her.

When she heard her partner call her, she came to an abrupt halt on a roof directly above the creature, standing straight up. Her eyes burned faintly in the low light, though they were easily overshadowed by the billowing mantle of glowing mental energy that had settled around her shoulders, the tail of the scarf following her momentum and snapping out to the side to flutter dramatically. Mirror Blade’s hands worked almost on their own, once again priming her internal energies, though this time she could feel a pressure building up inside her as she made a half dozen hand signs in a blur.

“Psychic Release: Serpent’s Embrace.” She recited to herself thrusting one hand forward towards the wounded creature as she kept the other formed in a seal near her chest. The tail of the scarf that had stretched up over her head began to extend, lashing downward like a scorpion’s stinger at the creature.

For Defending the park goers, Mirror Blade is going to try and take Influence over the bystanders, but she exposes herself to danger.

Glowing bands of force wound themselves around the beast, tying down it’s extremities and leashing it to Mirror Blade herself. A look of concentration crossed her face as she tried to force the beast down against the concrete. The creature might have an aura that made it easy to ignore, but Mirror Blade’s own abilities had no such glamour, she was sure a display like this would draw people’s attention.

“Please, leave the food court immediately through the southern entrance.” She called, trying to project calm and confidence as she pointed towards the far end of the court.

“We will keep this contained.” She said. As if the emphasize her meaning, a few glimmering motes of light extended out from the hand she’d used to point. White light connected the faint sparks, then expanded with pink light to form a short single-edged blade.

I'm honestly asleep for most of the copter ride over here, napping up against Bones - want to be rested up for the post-mission festivities after all (I mean we're heading to Halcyon Coasters, there's no way I'm not insisting we spend some time celebrating our inevitable victory)! That said, I hope they don't still have me on their list of banned people... what happened totally wasn't my fault! I mean, how could I resist the temptation?!

See, my friends and I went there back when I was a normal kid, and after I got bored with them I snuck off so Mahakali and me could get up to some fun on our own - specifically, we broke into the workshop for the go-carts. See, those things have governors on their engines limiting their speed to an incredibly lame fifteen-ish miles per hours. When they're removed, though - which is easy to do in a workshop with the proper tools and a Shadow Buddy's help - they can hit about sixty or so. I mean, I think that's how fast the pair of us were going (I was careful to dress him up in a Halcyon Coasters mascot outfit we found), and yeah, eventually I crashed my incredibly quickly moving cart into a snow-cone shop they had on the concourse. My parents and the staff here weren't terribly happy, but it's not like anyone got hurt - just the cart a little. No reason to ban me!

Dressed more like I'm prepared for a fun outing than a potential investigation into a mysterious mask, the only reason I'm interested in this conversation we're stuck in with the Security Chief is that she seems to NOT like me, and if she combined her names like I do she'd be Mamo, which isn't as cool as mine but is obviously close. Also she's said some stuff, but I'm sure Bones was paying attention, he'll just tell me later what's going on. Speaking of all that... our relationship's between the two of us, thank you very much! So many questions about that in the narration! Know what I'm afraid of? Getting sent to the hospital and missing out on a potentially fun date, not any dumb drama. So save it for somebody else!

Finished daydreaming and snapping back to attention, I give everybody a big grin, the only thing separating me from the tourists here that they have snacks I want while I have Shadow Powers. Ah well, I brought some cash with me just in case Bones and me need it later, got it zipped up in a pocket on this plaid skirt I've got on. Ugh, if it didn't 'scare normal people' I'd have summoned Mahakali already.

Regardless, standing next to Skelesavior, I think to start scanning up and down the concourse, checking for things that the Security Chief may forget to inform us of - I've got a knack for spotting trouble after all. "Yeah Obsidian, this place is great - er, I've heard anyways, I've never been," that was a close one! "Bet some snacks might help us think - any chance you could run and grab us some popcorn and stuff? I SWEAR my ~powers~ work better when I've got good blood sugar. "Oh and Milk Duds and sodas." I doubt she'll do it, but it's nice to imagine.

Scene 1 - Halcyon Coasters, continued
Team: 1 - Influence - Masks Reference

Bones: Monoka sighs, handing you a bright green datapad of some sort - you can see on the screen icons representing maps and events, along with a half-dozen other park features. "Here, you can use this for all our park data, and for getting around," She gives you a glare, "As far as 'strange unexplained events,' I can assure you that nothing of the sort has happened anytime recently. Your presence here is entirely unnecessary - I'm not sure how to got the ear of Mr. Black, but he's ordered me to accomodate your every need." She lowers herself a bit to look you dead in the eye, "That said, don't wear out your welcome." Wait, what was that? Who is Mr. Black?! But before you can ask...

Elf-Max: As you watch, the winking pixie floats of towards, per brightly colored signage, the Arboratorium. For a second, you think about trying to follow it, and what to say to the rest of the team. Do you? Unfortunately, any plan you might have just made is interrupted by...

Obsidian: Monoka shoots a glare your way as well, "What, didn't brush up on your way here? This is one of the largest amusement parks in the world, complete with state-of-the-art rides and attractions. We have-" A sudden ringing at her waist stops her cold, and she reaches down to pick up her comm with alarming speed...

Momo: Mum on the relationship - you got it. Anyways... you look around the park and see lots of things that could in the greatest danger - people, expensive rides, the 'World's Largest Steak,' I mean, it's a theme park, right? Probably the people though - there's got to be thousands here across the park, and many children at that. This could get way messier than the mall. *gulp*As for what's useful or valuable... maybe it's that explosive sound off in the distance, coming from the food court? Yeah... about that... (Adding 1 to the Team for your questions)

CitSquad: Monoka rips the comm out of her holster and slams it onto her ear. A second later, and the blood has drained from her face. She spins to look in the direction of the food court, barely managing to get out an "Oh god..."

The datapad in Bones' hand suddenly blinks bright red with alarm, and a message scrolls across the top. "ALERT - ALERT - ELKBEAR MALFUNCTION - ELKBEAR MALFUNCTION - FOOD COURT - EVACUATE" This can't be good.

Bones: What do you say to the team?

The Rest: How do you respond?

--

The Food Court

The monstrous beast roars in anger, whirling wildly, looking for something - or someone - to maul as its enraged bellow echoes across the food court. The combined attacks of Mirror Blade and Nightshade (Hey! That rhymes!) throw the beast well-off balance, and provide amply opportunity for parkgoers to scatter - which they do, eagerly and with a great many cries of horror.

Mirror Blade: The beast whirls and focuses on you, leveling its dangerous horns your way before charging. It hits you right in the midsection, sending you flying into "Tad Parker's Barbecue Experience," where pots and pans break your fall. Yowch!

Take a powerful blow

From your vantage point, you can see below the beast, where... wait what? Some sort of access hatch underneath the monster? You stare at the hatch on the beast's belly, and the oddly normal-looking handle. What do you do?

Nightshade: Your fireballs land with tremendous impact, searing scorch marks on the beast's back. The fur immediately catches on fire - great, you just made this thing even more horrifying - but it seems to be doing little to the machine. Wait... as the fur burns, it reveals some sort of metallic skin underneath. You don't think... this thing could be a... robot? What do you do?

"Blade, are you okay?" I shout the question to her as she goes flying into a barbecue stand, but like, she's gotta be fine. She's a ninja. She can probably ninja flip around each pot and pan in there and end up on her feet, with a few extra knives, or something. Instead, I focus most of my attention on the beast, the... metal... beast. It's... a robot giant hairy flaming elk thing? So does that mean it's the circuses and it's going wild for some reason, or is it some villains? Oh no, it couldn't be something Arsenal made, could it? She doesn't usually do robots but... I have a bit of a sinking feeling in my stomach, really, really hoping it isn't.

But no matter who is behind this, they still need to stop it! "It's some kind of robot I think!" Jumping backwards, I land on one of the tables in the food court, and wave my hands in the air in small circles, pooling together a swirl of flickering purple magical energy. As it gathers, I let one hand drop, now stirring the cloud of magic with one hand, and then swipe that hand down, pointing at the robot-thing. The cloud condenses into a black storm cloud for a second, fading as the magical energy jolts out of it in a jagged purple lightning bolt. If it's a machine, zapping it full of lightning should mess it up good!

Mirror Blade flipped her sword to a reverse grip as she saw the strange mechanical creature lunge for her. The scarf that had tethered the two combatants spun upon itself, rising up as a kind of shield as Ayama crossed her arms in a guard stance. It was enough to blunt the vicious array of points that thrusted at her like wave of daggers, unfortunately her light body couldn’t contain the force of the blow. Her sneakers lost purchase on the paving stones and she was blown clear. The scarf snapped taut as before she hit the ground, surely she intended to use that to rebound herself back into the fray.

Ah, no. Instead, it tore all too easily, flickering violet embers drifting on the dusk air

>CRASH<

Mirror Blade struggles through the pain, picking up the Angry and Insecure Conditions

All around her, there was the clatter and banging of pans. Apparently she’d managed to clear the front counter, meaning she’d landed in some kind of kitchen area. Of course, the impact and the flailing of her telekinetic scarf seemed to have forced gravity to take hold of every item that normally hung on hooks in the back.

“Ow…ow…--ow” she covered her head, heavy pans banging off of her arms, “Eep!” and she rolled aside as blades started shaking free from the knife rack. Huffing irritably, she started climbing back to her feet, hearing Nightshade call out to check on her.

“Mostly hurt my pride!” she called back, forcing a smile as she hopped over the counter again, taking a three point stance before her eyes hardened again. Large swaths of fur had burned away revealing a metallic shell underneath … but, then, what were with the weird black knives? Confused druids trying to sacrifice an animatronic? Or, maybe, they were conduits for something else to get in.

Oh, wait, no. From this low position, it seemed like there was some kind of hatch. The thing was probably piloted, it was certainly big enough.

“Hey, Shade!” she called, “I think there’s someone in there! Try not to overdo it, alright!?”

Of course, that’s when the lightning starts. It wasn’t a bad plan, really, the jolts of electricity were definitely locking up the servo-motors for short spans and it smelt like something electric was cooking. Of course, there was no way they could tell if the interior of the machine was properly grounded. Fortunately, unlike regular lightning, the stuff that Nightshade summoned had a definite pattern to it, latching onto her conscious mind rather than reacting organically to chaotic events. She just had to time it right.

Right after a brilliant flash, she dashed forward, a flickering shadow of motion once again. She tried to slide between the mechanical beast’s legs, willing a pair of gauntlets over her slender hands as she reached for the grips of the hatch. Did psionic energy constructs conduct electricity? She hadn’t the faintest notion, but she was going to find out. It seemed like the sort of thing that Shizuku would’ve warned her about, at least…

Ohh, a tablet. Great. They'd have to study that. He gave an impassive look as the security chief gave her warning. Mr Black, huh? Now that would be something they'd have to look into.

"I find that hard to believe Chief. The Citadel is never called without reason-"

BOOM

"Speaking of reasons." Bones checked the tablet. Elk-Bear? What the hell is an Elk-Bear? He shoots one last glare at the Chief before calling his orders.

"Team, prepare for rapid re-deployment. Obsidian, Shadowboxer, evac any civs in danger, if this thing is on a rampage we'll need to box it in. Max, range support, look for weakpoints. I'll keep it busy up close an personal."

Bones knew that Obsidian could do here land swimming over there at top speed, and Max could run along the rides. Momo could get Maliki to carry her, or her could offer her a ride. After all, he was planning on launching himself through the air at top speed with a little assistance from the spirit side, and kinda halo drop him self into the situation. After all, he couldn't die. And it would look cool as gently caress!

"Shadowboxer, need a ride?" He said, offering her a piggy back. He'd been practising this move. Even since the mall came down. As much as he hated his form, the powers they gave him had some uses. For one thing. Ectoplasm made for a wonderful landing pad.

"What?" A person inside? Oh - I can see the hatch now she's pointed it out, which is why she's the ninja I guess, not me. That's a bit of a relief really - even though I might have badly shocked whoever was inside, if it some kind of robot suit then this definitely wasn't made by Arsenal after all - any kind of fighting robot she'd make would be full of rockets and lasers and all that sort of good stuff. Feeling a bit better now, I almost miss Mirror Blade going in for the hatch - she's so fast! "Hang on!" I yell out a caution to her, and jerk both my hands upwards, forcing the lightning still coursing through the machine to fly upwards and off into the sky, leaving it un-electrocuted for her to grab.

Max keeps watching the pixie dwindle into the distance, while the security chief hands a tablet over to Bones and gets flabbergasted at Obsidian. Normally the gadget would be worth a peek, but this might be important. The elf lifts her head and stands on the balls of her feet, watching as the tiny figure dwindles to a spark and vanishes into... the Arboratorium. Because of course, a pixie-drone's patrol route would go through a botanical garden.

Why would a place like this have a garden, anyway? It's not hard to find a nook between attractions if you're looking to make out-- uh, from what she's been told, anyway-- and if you're looking for someplace quiet you probably should have stayed at home. Might be part of a deal with the EPA: set aside a plot of ecologically important land, bulldoze the rest to your heart's content. And if that land has trees that are old enough, and if the whole thing was secluded enough before the bulldozers went through...

Well, it couldn't hurt to check, right? Yes. Yes, it could. Despite herself, watching the presumed drone vanish, Max gets a feeling that it could just hurt worse not to.

Okay. So, how? Hey, could we split up for a bit so I can go do some elfy poo poo? No. Could we check out the Aboratorium? I think I just somebody I haven't seen in like a thousand years. Enh. Chief? Do you use fairy-shaped security drones, or is that just something the Disneys do? Trust an adult not to lie? It could wait, wait, wait. Who the heck is Mr. Black?!

...and what the heck just went 'boom' in the distance? It's accompanied by faint tinkles of the kind of screaming you don't want to hear at an amusement park.

drat it. Have to ask later.

"Find a perch, find a weak point. Got it, go me," she sighs, taking off at a jog that stretches into a sprint and graduates to leaps and bounds, each longer and higher than the last! Traveling as the platforming crow flies, she treats lamp posts as stepping stones, crossing manicured no guest's land and hurdling safety fences as the sounds of frightened people and something really angry. Just to be cheeky, she skips up the slope of a coaster and takes a dive off its apex, landing neatly on the cupola of a barn-themed restaurant. It doesn't take long to spot the... heck is that?

Just as good a question, who the heck is that person on the roof across the way?

"I really hope this doesn't go down the way the mall did," Max murmurs to herself, focusing on the angry, burning, glinting monster below.

As Nightshade called out for her to hold on, Mirror Blade planted her lead foot to bring her momentum to a full halt just out of arm’s reach of the weird elk-bear-robotsuit, looking into its wide green eye for a fraction of a second. Then, just as suddenly, she whirled off to the left, circling around the creature to strike from an unexpected angle as the electricity suffusing the thing’s mechanical frame starting shooting upwards like a curtain of light and heat.

It seemed like Shade was always there when she needed her. Of course, it felt a little like Shade was always looking out for her too. She had to make sure not to slow Nightshade down … this hero stuff seemed to come so naturally to her, Amaya had to keep up!

“Gotcha!” Mirror Blade said to herself, sliding to a stop with her palms upraised at her side, looking up at the underbelly of the mechanical chimera with a satisfied smirk on her lips. She wasn’t even sure if the after image from her feint was gone yet, but he was wide open. Her palms slammed into the exposed belly of the creature, gripping hold of the handle and wrenching the hatch open with all her strength. Of course, she hadn’t been expecting it to tear free … oops.

Being up in the air should give me a chance to scout out what's casting the longest shadows - that there's likely a fire actually gives me a lot of tenebrous ammunition, silver lining I guess - and it's a hilarious way to enter battle. Objective number one this fight? Don't get smacked down by a Nazi Crocodile (I hate that guy by the way), or anyone really. Objective two? Get to be the cool person in one of our fights for once! Everyone's been showing me up, and I'm not having it anymore - I'm more than just the team's sane person, and class clown, and eye candy~

"Giddie up!" I tell him once I'm ready, summoning Mahakali to trail behind me too since an explosion officially means I do not have to care about keeping things normal anymore. "Can use the shadow we cast to parachute us down, gonna stick to the edge of things this time and NOT enjoy a hospital stay." That's the plan at least!

"Ha, sounds like we're thinking the same thing. I'll keep it busy, you look for a way to take it out without getting within punching range." Bones shot out one lash and then another. Securing himself with two very stretchy ectopasmic tethers shot from his arms. The added bones in there made it even stronger. He pulled back until he could feel the brickwork he was connected too strain. He wrapped Momo up in more ectoplasm, to secure her.

"Huston, we have lift off!" Bones quipped. Launching himself and Momo into the air at high speed! They hurtled over the park, rides flying by them. Thank goodness Momo would be able to make her own decent. Because Bones was coming in hot. Jesus Christ this was going to be so loving cool!

"You know, the park looks really pretty from up here." Bones said to himself, enjoying the view, also the girl pressed into his back. That was pretty nice too. But all to soon it was over! "Momo, this is your stop! You know what to do!" Bones let go of Momo, trusting in her ability to land safely. Meanwhile he span through the air, hitting the ground and skidding a full 10 feet to a stop. The ectoplasm absorbed most of the impact, like some kinda resistant jelly. Slowly bringing himself to his feet Bones glanced around. Right, what have we got here?

Some kinda horned bear thing. Huh. And... two girls wrestling with it.... Well, that was unexpected. Well, the girls. Bones had expected the bear. I mean, there were only so many things you could expect when you hear the words 'bear-elk'

"Hey!" He yelled. Trying to see if he could draw the creatures attention away from the girls. "Come pick on someone your own size!"

Provoke Bear-Elk thing: 2d6-1 8

Bones was preparing for this thing to charge him. He'd always wanted to suplex a monster.

Team: 1 - Influence - Masks Reference

The combined blows from Nightshade and Mirror Blade rip open the beast's belly, revealing circuitry and... some sort of purple blob inside. A second look reveals it to be strange organic matter, wrapped around the circuitry and pulsating evenly - though scorch marks and damage from your attacks have injured whatever it is, and purple blood is raining down from it onto Mirror Blade and the pavement below.

The beast shutters and roars, then begins shaking wildly, throwing both girls to the side as it shudders in pain. It whirls to face the duo - but its rear legs flail, clearly damaged, and it falls onto its side, crushing several food stands underneath it. Mechanical creaks and snaps echo from within as it struggles back to its feet.

--

Elf-Max, Bones, Momo, and Obsidian hustle to the food court - and quickly see the chaos unfolding. On one side, a monstrous elk-beast (accurate!) and on the other, two vigilante teenage superheroes who are clearly in battle with it. They've hurt it pretty bad - but it's causing quite a bit of damage. Hey, this is kinda familiar!

Bones, not one to wait for prompts bad things to happen, leaps into action, shouting to distract the beast. It whirls to face Bones head on, then charges - crashing through a number of loose tables and chairs on its way, sending them flying in all directions. It slams into Bones full speed.

Bones: Take a powerful blow

Max, meanwhile, has expertly navigated the rooftops and rides and settles into place atop the local Burger Barn. Unfortunately, just as he arrives, a BOOM rattles the building, jolting him from his perch, sending him sliding down the roof onto the ground.

Max: Gain a Condition

Nightshade and Mirror Blade: Strangers have joined the battle! They look kinda cool, all in costume and ready to fight! That's a good thing... right? Or are you wary? What do you do?

Momo and Obsidian: Well, you're sure in the fight now! And Bones just got mauled. Do you help him out? Or are you focusing on damaging the beast? Or do you want to go investigate the vigilantes? What do you do?

Bones: Ow. That hurt (or maybe not). Do you shout out orders or trust your teammates to figure it out? What do you do?

--

Max: You whirl around, searching for what caused that explosion. Suddenly, a rocket flies past you, causing another explosion behind you. Wh-what?! The source of the rocket is... a lady with bright blue hair in long pigtails, with more guns than you've ever seen. She's firing from a massive shark-shaped rocket launcher, as numerous animatronic pirates surround her, brandishing their swords. She's vastly outnumbered, but they don't seem to be very dangerous. What do you do?

Great, he'd gotten the things attention. Now the only thing he hadn't accounted for was how fast this thing was coming at him. Which was pretty drat fast. Bones braced himself for the impact. If he'd had more time he'd try to tether himself to the ground. But he didn't have much choice in that. Instead he moved forwards. Hoping to get this thing stuck on him. One way or another.

When Bones rockets down towards the monster (evil animal thing, because of course), I slowly drift down towards the ground via a tenebrous parachute - all these lovely lights below gives me oh so many wonderful shadows to work with - and survey what we have going on here. So weird Elk-Beast-Thingy on one side, two weirdo hero girls that were fighting it, and an explosion for good measure. Steering clear of that explosion since fire messes with Mahakali and the rest of my powers really hard, which leaves them or... oh so it just hit Bones, my earlier plan's gone out the window. Know he's pretty drat tough, but still don't like seeing him get bowling pinned around all the time!

Landing on top of one of the stalls, I call down towards the pair of potential allies, figuring since Bones is indisposed, Elf-Max is elsewhere, and Obsidian's kinda socially awkward, I should be the one to tell 'em what's going on, especially since that one girl looks freaked out! "Don't know who you two are, but I'm Momo, we're with the Citadel and are like kinda superheroes, and you should help us out!" That's pretty drat succinct I think. Mahakali gives 'em both a wave over my shoulder, but I'm already using my hands to concentrate and focus my powers. Got a very good plan forming, though I AM annoyed this thing doesn't look like I can taunt it. I mean I'm going to, but it'll probably just be for my team's benefit.

Posed on top of the taco stand, hoodie donned and looking rad in these jeans of mine, I'm grinning down at the one monster, fingers outstretched as I feel out the many, many pockets of darkness around here. Where there's light there's shadows after all, though lucky for me I can borrow those shadows for a while, solidify 'em, all that good stuff. "Hey Five Night's at Freddie's! That's my boyfriend you just impaled, dick!" I'm keeping Mahakali in reserve for now - aiming my hands at the weird Elk-Thing, I snap all my fingers shut, and a swarm of grasping shadowy hands flood at it from all directions, seeking to distract and dissuade and confuse for now. None of 'em are strong enough to bind it, but I'm willing to bet they get this thing's attention away from Bones. Which is sort of the opposite of what we talked about, but gently caress just watching it wail on him!

The dark blur that usually characterized her rapid movement came to a stop next to Nightshade again, regrouping and letting the new arrivals take the lead for the moment.

"Eeeugh!" she remarked with a deep disgust, spitting a glob of violet goo to one side and scrubbing at her mouth as she raised her arms and looked at her outfit. Ruined, definitely, apparently some of those black blades had found their mark because the violet blood had been pooling up in the bottom of the machine before she tore the hatch off. drat ... this had been the cutest outfit she'd managed to keep before hitting the road, and now it was a total write-off. It's not like she had a budget to buy new clothes with!

"There's something in there alright, but it's not human." she said, noting that she'd lost her gauntlets when her concentration had slipped. Had to be more careful about that. "Some kind of ... purple growth entwined with the machinery. It didn't seem to have any eyes ..." she said, as if considering something. Gathering information was part of her job within the duo, after all ... though whatever this thing was was definitely outside of her experience.

"Citadel, huh?" she glanced over, the only Citadel she knew of disbanded before she'd been born. There was no telling what this new bunch was about. She looked over at Nightshade, "What do you think, Shade? The civilians are out of the line of fire, we could leave this to them..."

Of course, the Universe just hates a showoff.

If it had been somewhere on Citadel Island, preferably someplace in the sticks, Max probably would have been fine. Suddenly realizing that she just Sailor Mooned his way across a friggin' theme park, and landed twee as you please in front of somebody else with the tricks to find a rooftop vantage, the young gunslinger finds himself intensely aware of how ridiculous he looks, and almost overwhelmed by the godawful stink of the ro-beast's fun-fur covering burning off.

Of course, that's when the Universe gives him a playful shove.

If Max had been on her game, and not suddenly worried about a few strands of hair tangling around one ear, or the way that stupid tunic tries to billow its way loose from his gun belts, or whether that smoke is extra carcinogenic, she might have kept his footing. A thoughtless caper, a touch of self-awareness, and he'd have been cool. Looked cool, even, maybe.

All of this crosses Max's mind as something detonates close enough to rattle the restaurant like a box of matches. Startled, the elf puts a foot down in a patch of greasy residue from a deep-fryer exhaust vent. With a yelp and a high kick, he endures a quick slide to the edge of the roof and beyond, landing on his feet... but not stably enough to keep her rear end from hitting the ground hard enough to make her teeth clack together.

Somehow, Max still manages to bounce right back up to her feet, yanking the hem of her tunic down hard enough that her collarbones pop into view and other things-- other things are of lesser concern as a rocket whooshes past. He turns in time to avoid the red glare, frantically looking for the rocket's launcher, and...

Guh. Buh? For a second things were threatening to turn into a flashback to the mall, but everybody there was fully dressed. Except Bones, when he turned himself into giant Tinkertoys, but this lady's other things are braly oh god she saw everything, didn't she?

Max feels her cheeks flush hotter than the blast wave spending itself down the street. The elf's eyes dart, avoiding eye contact and desperately seeking a garbage can or storm sewer grate to climb into. A promising-looking one gets blasted into refuse, collateral damage as Arsenal reduces a brace of robot pirates to shivery, timbery bits. "Bits o' eight!" one chortles through a wash of static before falling still.

I should totally just go to the treeoretard. Retum. Nobody needs me here, and I could make... sure. Sure.

Max reaches down to her revolvers, squeezing the handles tight as she coils to spring away.

But... but what if everybody thinks I'm a coward and an idiot if I do?

Holding thought and pose, Max draws his revolvers and aims into the mass of animatronic pirates swarming up behind Arsenal. Sure she has enough guns and worse that she could probably flatten all of 'em without turning around, but there's nothing wrong with doing something nice.

Unless you hit them instead.

Shut up, brain.

A... purple blob? I have no idea what this means, but it probably isn't a human, so we don't need to be too careful! "Alright!" Before I can say more, the thing thrashes, sending us both flying. Jumping back to my feet, I look at Mirror Blade to make sure she's getting up just as fine, and then look back at the thing, it's fallen over, this is the perfect time to finish it off!

Er, what? More heroes? They better not think the two of us are responsible for this! But no, the guy is calling at the Elk-Bear-Robot-Blob to come attack him, good! So there's... some kind of... moving... lava... thing... someone dressed up in peter pan style outfit, a glowing final fantasy guy and... a regularly dressed girl with a 3d shadow behind her. "Hey, I'm Nigh-oh my god!" The words I was starting to form get cut off abruptly into a frantic shout as the Final Fantasy looking guy immediately gets impaled by the Elkhorns! I thought these people were going to be competent! "We could, but that guy just got gored!" I call, slightly hysterically, to Mirror. The cute shadow girl is trying to bind the thing, from the look of it, but that isn't working either, what kind of backup is this? Collecting myself a little bit, I gather up more magic, trying to figure out what to do. I can't do anything too damaging, or it might hit the guy whose still impaled on the horns, but maybe I can help Momo(?) bind it in place. Forming my magic into a purple haze around me, I clap my hands together once and thrust them separately out towards the Robot-thing, fingers spread wide. Coils of magic, condensing into vines, fly out from the haze to wrap themselves around the arms and legs and horns of the thing, joining in with the grasping shadows. "Blade, try to get the guy off while I'm holding it down!"

“He’s fine.” Mirror Blade said, pointing at Bones. The points of the robot’s antlers thrust clean through him in places, but there didn’t seem to be any blood coming off the sharpened points. “It’s some kind of disguise.”

Still, Nightshade was casting again, and that meant they were still on the case. Amaya considered the coils of violet vines lashing themselves to the robot’s frame and the grasping shadowy hands, looking for an angle of attack. Just how was she going to get this guy unstuck?

“Phrasing.” She chided softly, a sharp snap of air announcing that she was on the move again. The familiar zig-zag pattern of flickering shadows crossed the open space of the court yard, a table flipping as she kicked off of it and jumped high into the air this time. Near the apex of her jump, she rotated into an inverted position. She’d summoned up another blade, a long curved sword that had to be longer than she was tall, a nodachi glimmering pink in the dusk sky and clutched in both hands. Her feet landed against a platform she’d created directly over the elk-beast, her legs coiling like a spring as the momentum of her first jump pressed her up against it.

“HIAI!” and she kicked off the platform hard enough to briefly vanish once again, a streak of pink light flashing down light lightning as she brought the blade down against the back of the machine’s neck. If she’d forged the blade strongly enough, it should have decapitated the antlered-robot, removing it’s primary weapon and freeing the man from Citadel. If not, the blade would break over the endoskeleton, but that was no real loss. Either way, she hopped back, looking to get clear, planning to widdle the beast down by darting in and out faster than it could respond.

Well now, this was unexpected. The bot was getting mobbed by everyone. Including the two girls. One of them bound it, and the other tied to hack it's head off. Wow. That would be mildly threatening, if it wasn't for the fact that it was likely as much of a threat to him as these antlers were. Bones found his grip in the dirt. Digging in. The robot continued to push fruitlessly. He grabbed the horns and pulls them out of his chest. The pire lights in his eye sockets gleaming through his disguise.

"No no no, that's not how you say hello to all the girls and boys visiting the park. I'm so very disappointed in you." He says with a chuckle. "That's not even close to being a hug!"

Taking advantage of Momo's distraction. (drat, she looked so cool doing that!) Bones switches his arm out with something bigger and heavier. His 'giant slayer' arm. Swinging it up over his head and bringing it down on the Robot's back with as much force as he could.

iAlright, curtains for Axe - moving on!

Shadow hands, magical coils, and two substantial blows to the body give the elkbear more than it can handle. The large machine creaks loudly, then twists on an impossible axis, twisting and snapping as it falls to the ground, broken. From various holes in its outer skin, you can see the purple ooze within, and as you watch the luminous surface fades and goes dark - whatever was controlling this thing is dead. Scattered cheers erupt from civilians hiding out in the courtyard - but they soon turn to screams. You all turn... and see why.

A veritable army of mechanical pirates is advancing across the food court. They fire their flintlock pistols hap-hazardously in your direction, or straight up into the air, all swaggering about as a few sing a few tinny lines of a sea dirge. One in front is slightly bigger than the rest - and he slowly lifts his hand, bringing the army behind him to a stop. "Yaharrr, mateys. I be Cap'n Robo! Surrender your booty now... or prepare to pay the price in salt!" His eyes glow a faint purple - could he be affected by the same stuff as the elkbear?

Mirror Blade: Congrats - you got the killing blow! These newcomers seem great to have around. What do you say to them?

Nightshade: Nice combo with Momo's shadow hands! Still, you've got a sinking feeling about this goop that seems to be animating these robots. What about them reminds you of Starry Night?

Momo: Impressive teamwork - looks like you'll need some more! Wait... where did Max go? She never showed up... Do you go look for her or stay in the current fight?

Bones: More fight! Fight more?

---

On the other side of Burger Barn, Max lets loose a flurry of bullets, pinging off robot chests and knocking down a few of the pirates. Arsenal lifts her head Max's way, then cackles madly and fires off another salvo into the crowd, sending robo bits flying.

Max: Still lots to do! Unfortunately, your attacks have drawn the attention on yourself - at least from a few - and a half-dozen robopirates are now "yo-ho-ho"-ing your way. What do you do?

There is a band of robot pirates marching on them. Bones frowns as a stray shot hits the asphalt by his feet. With a sigh and a shake of his head, the skeleton man steps over the elk thing. Strolling towards the throng. Counting them as he went.

"Ten, twelve, thirteen, fifteen... that's a lot of guys. Who knew pirates were so salty?" He said drily. "Do you mean blood?" Why would they have salt on hand to pay with? Blood is salty, but that's a bit of a leap to make. While the pirates are still talking, or... singing, I guess, I move over to the defeated Elk-bear, leaning down to get a closer look at the 'dead' goo. Figuring out what's the deal with this stuff is more important, or the robots will just keep coming. Forming a stick out of spare magical energy, I poke it, while using my cellphone's flashlight feature to light it up a bit.

Oh no. I didn't recognize it before since I didn't get a very good look, and usually things glowing purple are because of me, so that threw me off a bit too. But looking closer... I think it's gotta be. One of the government vaults Starry Night and I raided had a tiny artificial alien amoeba thing taken from somewhere in Pennsylvania. It seemed to be able to grow when 'fed' material to absorb, and was controllable by her cosmic energy, but neither of us could figure out a use for it. But... it looked an awful lot like a very small version of this. And even 'dead', the goo ball feels like it has traces of that aura.

...I should get out of here. 'Right, right. Hey, you two, Scarfie and... purple hair girl? You up for another round of being heroes?' "Nightshade. And she's Mirror Blade." I correct him automatically, trying to talk myself into leaving. But I'm supposed to be a hero now. I can't just turn and run because I might have to deal with an old friend. I grit my teeth, arguing internally, and then stand up straight again, nodding. "Yeah, let's do this." I have a better idea of how to handle these things now though. Gathering up my magic to my hands again, I start to swirl it around once more, feeling the temperature around my hands drop, ice crystals forming on my skin. Once they've nearly iced over, I place both hands down on the ground in front of me, sending the freezing wave forward to frost over the ground itself, freezing everything as much as I can. These goo-pilots shouldn't function nearly as well if they're frozen!

*SPANG* Mirror Blade shifted her stance slightly, a spark announcing the patch of her psionic blade bisecting a musket ball cleanly. She twisted to one side with a quick spinning step, letting the too-large nodachi slip from her fingers. She seemed almost to fall into a dance, two smaller blades appearing in a reverse grip as she shifted from one stance to another, doing her best impression of a Jedi with clockwork precision. Under the fusillade of bullets rushing their way, she spun and slashed and parried leading to a shower of sparks as tried to keep any errant rounds from catching spectators beyond her.

“…This is becoming far too public a spectacle.” She mumbled, hiding her face away behind the muffler around her shoulders as she watched the mechanical buccaneers reloading their pistols and waving their cutlasses about with reckless abandon. Her instincts—Shizuku’s instincts, she corrected herself—were telling her that it was time to drop a smoke bomb and disappear. There were people looking for her, after all, the last thing she wanted was to end up on the nine o’clock news. May as well fire a flare telling them exactly where she was.

”Yeah, let’s do this.”

Whelp. She couldn’t exactly leave Nightshade out in the cold now, could she?

“Well…I doubt I’ll get a better chance to check Code Lizard off of my bucket list.” She said, sliding the knives in her hands into invisible sheathes along her hip as she glared through the haze of gunpowder smoke, “I think it still counts if they’re robots.”

Mirror blade’s hand snapped forward in a throw, a trio of violet shuriken spinning through the air to bury themselves in the riot of robo-pirates in front of her, her other hand flashing out with another fistful of throwing-star shaped mental energy as she drew the first hand back. Her feet were set, but she weaved her body in a slow figure eight as she threw, the image of three overlapping young girls hurling shuriken as fast as they could overlapping in her position. A relentless storm of spinning blades carved their way through the air of the food court, racing the tide of ice ripping out from her partner.

It was as the master once said. Just because you meet an enemy who will not be felled by a hundred stars does not mean that you stop after throwing one. No, instead you throw one thousand stars. That is the essence of the dreaded ninja art:

Alright, these two randos (Nightshade and Mirror Blade apparently) we found have some cool powers and, more importantly, seem kinda hilarious. We should totally recruit them... I wonder what their parents feel about them signing up for a weird militarized collection of tents and trailers in the woods that passes for a school every now and again and sends its students on dangerous missions constantly? Mine were all about it, so there's hope - plus they're both doing the superhero thing already, it'd be cool to recruit them.

Also cool? We're literally fighting Goo Robot Pirates. They're a huge step up on fascist reptiles, even if they're not quite cool enough to be ghost pirates, so yeah I'm looking forward to this. Looking down at the horde descending on the park (from my rather safe position atop this building) I'm all smiles and plans, gazing about for pockets of shadows to manipulate, and then... record scratch. Where the poo poo is Max? Bones notices too, asking me if she's invisible, and I'd laugh sarcastically to let him know that wasn't funny enough if it wasn't for the fact that yeah, our Legolas is missing. What could have happened to her?

"Looking for her in a sec, but first..." I'm not heading off to search for her without showing off a LITTLE more. Watching Sword-Girl fling a truly absurd number of ninja-stars, Mahakali claps over my shoulder while I grin (So. Totally. Anime.), I've got a pretty great idea. See, she's throwing a lot of things... which have shadows... which I'm totally able to control. Reaching out with my hand / powers, I materialize as many of them as I can, turning her storm of blades into a veritable hurricane. "Shadow Daisak... Shadow whatever she said!"

Spending our last point of team to boost Mirror Blade's Engage to a 10 - pick an additional option.

loving awesome. I, we, this superheroes thing - it's a blast, but I got a job to do. "Gonna track Max down and see what's up, you three handle things until I'm back~ C'mon Mahakali!" The pair of us race off from rooftop to rooftop, me bridging them with the plentiful tenebrous ammunition this place provides, while Mahakali just floats since he's MY shadow. Shouldn't be too hard to find her, right? I mean this place isn't that huge and I've even been here before. Banned, actually, but let's not rehash that. The fact remains, I bet I can track her down, and whatever's kept her is probably there too. "YO MAX WHERE YOU AT?!"

Shadousutomu no jitsu!” Mirror Blade offered as black throwing edges began to mix in with her own stream of attacks. Hardened edges of psionic energy or shadow stuff flew at ballistic speeds, penetrating the steel bodies of seadog automatons punctuated by sprays of violet goo where they found organic matter beneath the carapace. Hopefully, the onslaught would break the rabble of possessed machines…if she could split them up and attack in detail she might be able to isolate Captain Robo. He seemed to have some authority among the mechanical menaces, and he was at least aware enough for speech. If she could get close enough, she might be able to glean the horde’s goal from his alien mind.

Okay. A nod. That's usually a good thing, right?

Max raises a hand, fingers off the trigger, muzzle pointed skyward. A wave's as good as a nod, isn't it? Yeah.

Cackles, though. Cackles are rarely good. Max's scalp tries to crawl down and hide behind his shoulders, making her look wide-eyed. Despite proper trigger discipline, the elf's upraised gun goes off, launching a twisting ribbon of firework sparkles high into the air. It doesn't impress the robot pirates that are chuckling and yoho-ing and pieces-of-something toward her.

Caught between clanking and crazy, Max swings one arm down and the other up in the worst semaphore ever, bringing her guns to bear on the bots. Streamers of energy and elf-shot lance across the intervening space... of which there is less and less, even as she hops, dodges and cartwheels through debris and onto ledges. Guess their programming doesn't differentiate between rigging and landbound structures.

Scene 1 - Halcyon Coasters, continued
Team: 1 - Influence - Masks Reference

Bones: You reach out to the goo - and it seems to be... reaching back to you? You flinch. Something deep inside this is... ancient, powerful. It knows. Of what, you can't be sure. But there's an intellect behind it, something powerful. Something frightening. You shake it off, as best you can, then get back to the matter at hand. Momo dashes off to find Max - do you follow, or back up the newcomers?

Nightshade: You thrust icy magic forward, coating the ground, and freezing the leather boots worn by the robot pirates. However - they keep moving! Robotic bones rip right out of the boots, and on strange appendages, the pirates are now... skating on the ice? Several of them close in on you, lashing out with deadly blades. Take a powerful blow! Well, now what?

Mirror Blade: Nightshade gets thrown by her ice-skating robot pirates, but your actions strike true! It also helps that the shadow girl (Momo?) throws in a few shadow stars of her own. Cool trick! Many of the pirates fall to your superior ninjutsu - only about half remain skating around, picking around the fallen chunks of robopirate you've left in your wake. Time for round 2?

Momo: Your shadow stars a rousing success, you leap away, searching for Max. You find her easily - facing off against a robotic pirate army all on her own. Well, and with a strange ally - some sort of rocket launcher-weilding madwoman (scroll up for pic!). Zounds! The biggest threat and the best way to assist Max are questions answered in one way - do unto pirates, what they would do unto you!

Max: You dodge, duck, dip, dive, and dodge your way around curved scimitars and straight punches, managing barely to avoid taking any blows. Unfortunately, it leaves you little room to attack back - and the close proximity of foes means your new friend can't attack without hurting you as well (which... she won't do... right?). Better not leave it up to chance. You hear over the scuffle a voice calling your name - Momo! What do you do?!

“’Shade!” Amaya took a step towards the ice reflexively, seeing the flash of steel in the afternoon light as the mechanical seadogs closed in on her partner. As she reached the edge of the ice, however, she paused looking down at her feet.

”Are you kidding me?” she muttered to herself, ”All those incarnations and we don’t know how to ice skate?” The tail of her muffler swished back and forth like an over-sized cat’s tail in defiance of any kind of breeze, Mirror Blade chewing her bottom lip. Enhanced speed and ice seemed like a terrible combination, so closing to melee would be difficult. Still, every one of those shuriken she’d thrown had taken a bite out of her chakra … this body’s reserve was better than average, but it was far from inexhaustible.

“Just have to get creative.” She determined, drawing one of the short blades from where she’d left it along her hip and using her free hand to tug her mask a bit higher. One of the mechanical pirates trailed too close to her, trying to draw a bead on Nightshade with its pistol. Suddenly a flat band of glowing violet energy snapped tightly around it, looping under the arm and wrapping around its head as Mirror Blade pointed two fingers at it, her long scarf having whipped forward to bind him. Pulling her arm back, she jerked the pirate off its feet, pulling it towards her through the air. She jumped to meet it, her blade flashing twice in a quick “X” pattern that lingered in the air as she landed on its shoulders, her muffler’s grip slackening as she kicked off of the pirate, alien ichor spraying from the twin rents in its mechanical frame as she jumped to the next one.

There was a clash of steel on steel as the next target raised its cutlass to meet her, however she parried and rolled over the top, her second blade drawn as she sliced for the buccaneer’s neck and kicked off its back. A blur, Mirror Blade moved from one pirate to the next, each one as much a platform to her as it was a target, her path marked out by the fluttering end of her glowing scarf and a series of tumbling foes.

“Don’t!” her scarf looped around a mechanical neck, allowing her to change her direction in mid-air while throwing the body into a tumble.

“Hurt!” She landed atop another pirate, the impact bowing him long enough for her to jam a blade through each of its shoulders to take its arms out of play before vanishing away.

“My!” her legs locked around the throat of a third before she fell backwards forcefully and drove its skull into the ice with enough force to deform its metallic dome and send a spider-web of cracks across the surface. Rolling back onto the machine, she flickered away again.

Partner!” a blade appeared through both eyes of another target, before Mirror Blade herself drove a kick into its chest and toppled it to the pavement. Tearing the swords free again, she looked for her next target.

He felt pretty sure that Momo would be able to help Max out. Besides, once this was over he wanted a word with these two. He couldn't discount the possibility they were involved in all of this somehow, and it would be really unhelpful if they tried to slip away. Though, something told him it might not have much to do with them, and far more with this black mask thing. He'd have to compare notes with Max once they were done mopping up here.

"Oy, you two! What's your names?" Bones yelled as he waded into the midst of the pirates. Sharp bones ripped through his trainers and into the icy ground, giving Bones the leverage he needed to move freely. Throwing punches and (very pointy) kicks left and right. Okay, sure, it wasn't nearly as cool as whatever ninja bullshit that scarf girl was pulling out. But he had a different idea in mind. Getting somewhere in the middle of the group, Bones grinned like a mad man. His hands moving in mystical patterns taught to him by the Loa. Even as the robots mobbed him. "Also, you might want to steer clear of this!"

"Loa of Earth! Baron of Death! I call to you, and offer you fire and steel!" He grabbed a musket from one bot, kicking it off, sending it spinning through the air. With a grunt Bones snapped the rifle in two over his knee holding it up in offering. "And there's more where that came from as well! Take as much as you want!" He slammed the broken gun into the earth and braced himself. A shockwave rippled out from his hands. Like a droplet of water in a still pond. "Light your cigars, and party long into the night! RAVING DEAD!"

A sea of skeletal hands burst forth from the earth, grasping and clawing, battering the robots and taking their boomsticks and blades with tireless glee. They moved like a rave crowd, hands in the air, almost dancing to an unheard beat. All the while beating on the pirates.

"Ha-ahh..?" My confident exclamation as I freeze the robot pirates in traps of purple ice trails off into a slightly alarmed, puzzled sound as they rip free and start skating on robot bones? That's... "Ahh!" I was too focused on how weird this was, and not enough on them coming right at me, blades out! I duck under the first strike, transform the second and third robots into large rubber ducks with a burst of concentrated magic, and completely fail to see the fourth one coming up behind me and slashing at my side with it's blade!

"Ow, ow, gently caress!" I roll away awkwardly, getting back to my feet and scrambling backwards away from the pirates, one hand clutching the bleeding cut at my side. I still can't heal it, but I start to weave a small purple nimbus of magic around it to apply pressure once I'm a safe distance from the pirates. "ugh," I let out a grunt of frustrated pain as the hero guy runs past, asking what are names are. "I told you, it's Nightshade and Mirror Blade!" That's like, the third time I've introduced us now, maybe the fourth!

The irritation -mostly caused by the injury- fades somewhat as I watch him cast some spell of his own, bringing for a swarm of skeletal arms to attack the pirates with. That's... kind of evil looking magic too. Mirror Blade meanwhile is being the coolest drat girl I've ever seen, doing sweet kick flips and scarf things and in general just being way more badass than I ever could. At least the time it takes me to do a stupid simple bandage spell -which isn't even proper healing and is still slower than it takes me to zap something with lightning- is being spent by watching her being amazing.
