Hello D&D! I'm not in the US, and don't really know what sources are good, so I'm going ahead and asking you:

I always were of the impression that Bernie Sanders didn't really care about non-white workers back when he was Senator. I was told this by a friend who usually knew her poo poo, and so I didn't question it.

Now there's a lot of arguments for and against, and I can't really find a good analysis. I see that the NAACP has given him a 100% score on civil rights, which implies he's done right, but does that factor in workplace legislation at all?

Note that I'm not interested in a general debate on Sanders merits, merely if it's true that his work only benefitted white workers. Thanks in advance!

gently caress off. If it's not clear, I consider not prioritizing non-white workers to be a BAD thing for a self-declared socialist senator.

As always, the Voting Record is a good first resource:

So I gathered, but to someone who isn't familiar with what acts have been important to labor and which one haven't, it's a bit hard to make sense of. Thanks, I'll give it a shot!

I'm a bit confused on how your friend thinks this with regards to workplace legislation.

Honestly I'd be leaning towards them buying into some of the mudslinging that happened during the primaries unless there is a solid record of him only voting for pro worker legislation in mostly white areas.

This is what I'm thinking, but it's really hard to get a straight analysis.

Pretty sure Tias is trolling/making fun of Hillary supporters.

Not really( they're good at making fun of themselves, IMHO).

I ask because a lot of people here in Denmark are acting like Sanders is the second coming of social democracy, when it seems like he's more or less a liberal fatcat that talks the talk but won't walk the walk.

this is a great question

recent studies have shown that the economically disadvantaged are disproportionately people of color

http://money.cnn.com/2016/06/27/news/economy/racial-wealth-gap-blacks-whites/

quote:

The report found that in 2013, white households in the U.S. had a median wealth of $144,200 -- almost 13 times the median wealth of black households at $11,200. But here again is an example where the gap is not significantly narrowed by education. White households headed by someone with a college degree have a median wealth of $301,300 compared to college-educated black households, which have a median wealth of $26,300.
Related: Black wealth not protected by homeownership
One of the biggest ways to amass wealth, especially for people of color, is to own a home. Yet the homeownership rates for blacks is just 43% compared to 72% for whites.

with statistics like these, it seems that policies that target the working class in general would actually be better off for people of color, not for white workers exclusively, as i have also heard.

i am also curious to hear an explanation for this

I'm going to take a risk here and believe this isn't a troll.

https://votesmart.org/candidate/key-votes/27110/bernie-sanders#.WFbOU_krLcs

I mean long story short, if you go to that website and look at what he has voted for and against, even just reading the descriptions you can see what it's done. You can also click on the acts as well. But he has voted for a lot of things that effect people of all races, including whites which make up a vast majority (95%!) of his state. So anything he did representing his state was pretty much mostly for white voters as he was the ones he was appeasing - people who voted for him every 2 years since I think about 1992-2006 (excuse me if these dates are off). So if he did anything to favor the state that he was literally representing, then it can be possible that it heavily effected whites.

But I don't really see him ignoring minority groups at the federal level.

Just skimming on that page you can see that he has voted for things such as pay when you're sick from work. He has voted on bills that prevent American businesses from outsourcing and providing jobs here, projects expanding highways. So yes, these things did a lot for a very large amount of white (low and middle-class) Americans. But that doesn't mean ignoring minorities, he seems to target class instead of race, trying to equally uplift both whites and minorities that make up the low-middle working class. And these are just the first 3 random pieces of workplace-legislation I picked off from the link above. Sure you can probably find some things he voted on in there that might of effected the white working-class more than others but hey, welcome to the United States class system.

So in conclusion, I think you're friend is wrong and just skimming some pages on the internet helps show that. So maybe you are a troll :)

edit: Commie Ned Flanders post above mine is way more succinct.

Not trolling, for reals. I'm just an easily distracted sperg and had a hard time navigating the site. Thanks for explaining!

I don't agree with your friends, especially whatever this liberal "fatcat" means as he was fairly low-profile until the election. But as far as American politics go, he was pretty extremely left in a way we don't get to often here in the USA.

edit to avoid double post: As he only became pretty drat wealthy recently with his book, http://www.fool.com/investing/general/2016/04/17/what-is-bernie-sanders-net-worth.aspx shows that even compared to other senators he was "poor". He only became extremely wealthy in the last 6 months. But he was never poor in the way my broke-rear end would define it, but it's a pretty huge difference compared to other American politicians of equal standing.

You're not being a very good radical leftist if you don't denounce the second coming of social democracy as a dirty liberal idea.

Ok, I've come to the conclusion that the allegations are false. He hasn't done anything to help white workers that didn't help non-white ones as well.

Got what I came for, so closing this and thanks for your help.
