FATAL & Friends
Walls of Text
#1 Builder
2014-2018

During World War II, a great tide of darkness swept across the world. With the valiant efforts of many heroes, both remembered and forgotten, that tide was pushed back. In the battles that turned the tide of the war, Allied forces launched what have become known to those few who recall that they existed at all as Operation Darkness. What occurred in this campaign was heavily redacted, classified and buried. Since then, a number of files have been lost to fire, mold and bureaucratic mishandling. What actually occurred in the 1940s as part of the mysterious campaign against a shadow division of the SS has been lost to almost everyone. Only the highest levels of the world are aware that it involved, among other things, vampires, witchcraft and werewolves.

However, some of the legacy of Operation Darkness survived. Every major nation is aware of the existence of certain paranormal abilities. The CIA via MK-ULTRA in the United States, MI13 and Operation Edom in Britain, China's Joint Staff Department and others have all unlocked certain secrets - base witchcraft, mental powers, occasionally genetic quirks or the results of transfusion of strange chemicals. It's useful in intelligence work, after all. Not all agents possess these powers - some are merely incredibly skilled, dangerous people of their own right, without any apparent supernatural talents beyond, perhaps, nearly superhuman skills.

Still, mysteries remain. The whereabouts of the Nazi assets from Operation Darkness have never been found. Rumor in the intelligence agencies suggest that there were vast sums of money - particularly in the form of gold and valuable artifacts - and research into human augmentation that would have been invaluable to anyone who recovered them. They vanished without trace in 1945, if they ever existed. Most agents write this off as a rumor.

You do not. You are a group of operatives, burned by your former masters, retired or otherwise no longer in the employ of any government, at least officially. You have seen things you can't explain. Each of you has uncovered a fragment of something that proves that there is more out there than you or your masters dreamed of. You have all been contacted by credible sources or otherwise uncovered credible information that has convinced you that you need to be in Morocco on June 8, 2013. You are seeking a woman, an antiquities dealer operating under the name Caroline Hardison.

What is this?

This is a game of Night's Black Agents. It will be using the Mirror and Stakes rules, for the most part. It is also going to be using the Special Assets variant. Weird poo poo is out there. You may be part of it. While I may borrow some from the Dracula Dossier, this is not a Dracula Dossier game. I am going far off the rails here. You will be seeking the truth and trying to stop the awful things that are being done behind closed doors and in the shadows of the world. You're going to have to be tough, because the beehives you'll be kicking over will not appreciate it and will retaliate.

They are not unstoppable. They do not control the world. They are, however, extremely well-funded, well-prepared and, of course, they're vampires.

For this game, you're probably going to want:
  • The Night's Black Agents core book.
  • PMs and/or to be hanging out in #persona on SynIRC so you can chat with me.

Some notes:
  • Thriller combat rules are available for use.
  • Hypnosis and Geology from the Dracula Dossier are in and can be handy.
  • In addition, you may purchase "Special Weapons Training" for your fists to represent a particularly efficacious martial art, improving the Damage Modifer to -1 when using Hand-to-Hand.
  • From Double Tap, the following Thriller Maneuvers are not available: Alibi, For Your Eyes Only, Safety's On, Mark and Strike, One-Two Punch, Perfect Drop, Thrown Clear by the Blast. We will use the Thriller rules for digital intrusion, infiltration, surveillence or manhunts when it makes sense to do so but if it slows down play, we can drop focus.
  • Achievement Refreshes are in.

Character Creation:
  • 20 points Investigative Abilities, 65 Build Points. You can leave up to 5 of each unspent to spend in play, or optionally after we've selected the initial team trade those points per the Trading Points rules.
  • This is a Mirrors game, and I encourage hidden agendas. You might be compromised by Dracula, or Edom, or something else entirely. If you are open to this, or have an idea for it, let me know by PM or Skype. That being said, I recommend not making a concept that is solely tied to this, as I will be trying to make sure that not every character is a commie nazi mutant vampire traitor.
  • It is generally assumed characters do not know about vampires, werewolves or so on. There is no hard cap on how much Vampirology you can start with, but the nature of that information, whether it is primarily based on legends, or experience, will vary. If you are secretly working for vampires or the like, it might be more effective. This should be suspicious to other people, however.
  • If you want a supernatural ability, talk to me about it. Generally speaking, they cost 5 points for the first dot, and then normally for General Abilities after that, but I need to okay whatever ability you're taking.
  • If you want to involve something from the Operation Darkness video game in your backstory, talk to me about it, since...well, I'm changing things there. It was a bad game.
  • You may use the following c-sheet template, or another if you like that covers the same information:

Languages Spoken: Based on Languages Ability. Everyone can speak English (there's going to be a lot of Britain involved and it's a lingua franca), and their native language (or any other language if English is native.) You may elect to leave some languages chosen, if so make a note of how many you have remaining you can select, subject to Director discretion.
Driving Licenses: First dot is most automobiles, For every point past the first in Driving you select one of the following: motorcycle, transport truck, bus, construction equipment, remote-control car or robot, ATV, snowmobile, motorboat, jet-ski, or something exotic like hovercraft and tanks. Trusted By: As you earn Trust from the other operatives, you will make note of it here.

Known Associates: After start of play, you can record your character's opinions and relationships with the other player characters, and any non-player characters that are especially important. for your own reference, as detailed or not as you like.

Personality:

Appearance:

History: My preference for all three of these is succinct but full of potential hooks to unfold. It's better to have a thumbnail that's flexible but evocative than tie down too many details, considering the thriller genre conventions. That being said, it's most important to do it however is best for you.

Until she was caught accessing an area she shouldn't be in, and, well, things got a little hectic for a bit there. She's been keeping a low profile since then, but occasionally a forgery turns up with the hallmarks of her work. More often, her forgeries go unnoticed...

You spend your off-camera time deleting hard drives and cracking cell phone carrier databases for fun. An agent may leave a device in the field that can give up information, but only from the last time you handled it for a wipe.
  • Check Your Other Left Pocket: You may spend Preparedness on behalf of other agents in the field. The Director may require a brief flashback scene where you give your teammate the piece of equipment along with an eerily prescient explanation of why he or she will need it.

Personality: Milan is rather retiring in personality in person. He doesn't come off nearly as aggressive as some who might know him by other means of correspondence might expect, and there's a very clear difference between the rather soft-spoken Russian man and the persona of the "Firebird" that's all flamboyant charm and "aggro" faux-machismo. He's older than people expect and knows how to act like a goddamn adult, but there's this perverse childish joy he gets out of being someone else under his identity, that extends to the entire world of shadows that might rub "professionals" the wrong way. Also, don't get him talking about politics. Or aliens.

Appearance: With mixed heritage both Tatar and Russian, Milan blends with many Eurasian ethnicities and is quite talented at disguise, tending to keep a very low profile in person. He does have a weakness for wearing purple, is very particular about his hair, and prefers to ride a bicycle, scooter, or motorcycle if he can help it. His beaten up canvas messenger bag is one of the few things that marks him as a signature item, always filled with something needed for the operation.

History: It wasn't exactly enlightened realization of his own hypocrisy that caused Milan Shabayev to stop working for the Kremlin. The fact he was a bisexual man in an increasingly regressive country notwithstanding, he didn't take a great stand or anything of the sort when he started working for the other side in Ukraine as things start to escalate in tensions against the current Russia-friendly government. If anything, he wishes it was for a greater cause, but he finds himself working the same scams, gambling slush funds, and other work for basically the same kind of oligarchs. Coming from wealth himself (his parents are petrol oligarchs back in the Federation) it's not that he's lacking for money. He's exceedingly rich and can come across as a dilettante. No, it was a combination of two things: One, he got bored and thought he'd like a bit more of a challenge. Two, he saw something he really shouldn't have, and suddenly all that conspiracy junk he was peddling for disinformation, he wondered if it wasn't being used to cover up something better. Also, he started dating the man he was supposed to do a targeted smear hit on. So that's three reasons... And now he's tracking a few known quantities to this Caroline Hardison in Morocco. Here's hoping for a fourth reason, to make this all worth it.

Trusted by: TBD

Appearance: While undisguised, Arash is distinguished by his undisciplined mop of white hair, wrinkling skin, and well-groomed mustache. His taste in clothes tends towards a loose fit and almost-gaudily bright colors. Together these make for a very memorable image, in deliberate contrast to the more subdued covers that he adopts on the job.

Personality: Arash presents himself as a garrulous, kind-hearted family man. Someone who's a bit doddering and a little nosy, but fundamentally harmless. Naturally, the agents sent to surveil him suspected that a sadistic henchman of the secret police lurked beneath his good humor. And therein lies the trick: Arash is not a cruel man. Though he knew his own agency might torture him to death, and that his mercies could lead a host of murderers to all that he knew and loved, this nature of his did not change.

Perhaps that's how he flipped so many contacts during his career.

Background:

A Teleboutique in Old Marrakesh posted:

"Come on, dial would ya...Hello? Dearest?"

"Ah, my rose, it is you! It has felt like a hundred years without you by me, Nasrin. O, I've become a wilted flower without rain, a fading moon without the sunrise, my eyes left a thou-well, huh, I guess it has only been a week."

"Mhm, Morocco's been wonderful. And I, yes, uh-huh, I'm keeping to the diet. No meat after eight, yup. Which by the way, you know they don't sell the right kind of patty and good naan at the same place out here. Had to buy a pound of one and bring it to the other myself! Shoulda seen the look on their faces. Eh, city folk are the same everywhere."

"I got you something! A lot of things, actually, but I found that perfect cleanser you were searching for. Called a "su:m37 Miracle Rose Cleansing Stick", it's Korean. Tested the pH at about 5-and-a-half, so the right level for your skin, and darn smooth for a saponified soap. Nothing in it should irritate you either, so it's even got a one-up on me! Now all's I need to do is buy Nintendo for little Amina's birthday. Shouldn't be too hard."

"What?"

Arash is a hand so old that his agency has gone defunct twice. Information concerning him is not "classified" so much as it was burnt to cinders by the Taliban during the 90s. While this secrecy would be a boon to most spies, Arash is open about his methods and background. Ask his associates, whether they're graying former mujahideen or once-KGB now-FSB officials clinging onto their seniority, and they'd largely agree with whichever tale you happened to hear from him.

Though he grew up in the remote countryside of northeastern Afghanistan, he was resourceful enough to get into Kabul University. While there he met his wife Nasrin and graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering, then went to work on the Soviet-financed Naghlu Dam during the tail end of its construction. Contacts led to other contacts and by the late-70s he found himself working in Afghan intelligence.

For the next 20 years he was embroiled in a war of shadows, one cast in the light of artillery blasts and rocketry. There was the ISI, the CIA, the MSS, the MOIS, and those were just the ones he was supposed to act against. At times he spent the lion's share of his effort maintaining autonomy from his own agency and their supervisors in the KGB. They weren't keen on how genuinely friendly he was with prisoners, his disregard for 'investigating internal politics', or the amount of effort he spent protecting even low-level sources from assassination. But the man, as always, got results.

He is "retired" now, spending most days in his relatively secure hometown of Fayzabad. Perhaps by coincidence, he was vacationing in Morocco when a street vendor handed him a curiously-marked antique handkerchief. It stoked a rather peculiar fire in Arash's heart. One that he hadn't felt since he was waltzing into armed encampments with nothing but gumption and a fake beard. Gifts for his family come first, of course, but the old life was calling back.

Personality:
Calm, seemingly apathetic to people he doesn't know. For people he does know, he tends to be warm and talkative to them.

Appearance:
Middle aged man who is beginning to go grey. His body type is stocky and he stands just about five foot seven. He tends to dress in drab colors and rarely wears anything that would make him stand out.

History:
Served in the U.S. Army Intelligence. Stationed in Germany for most of his time in the service. While he worked the U.S. military during the day, at night he became involved with various criminal organizations. He engaged in criminal enterprises for the money. Most of the work he did for criminal organizations involved selling illegal items to members of the U.S. armed forces. After years of being involved in illegal activities, he got caught and shipped back stateside. He should have been brought up on charges, which would have led to a long sentence in a military prison (along with a loss of rank). Instead nothing happened. He got reassigned to the US military's Foreign Intelligence Directorate (DAMI-FI).

During his time in the DAMI-FI, he met his future wife. The marriage was troubled from the start. He couldn't talk about a lot of the work he was doing and it created a rift between them. However, she had a knack of comforting him, even if he couldn't tell her what his problem happened to be. They had a daughter, Katherine, which they thought would help mend their relationship, but Thomas' job always kept causing problems. After about ten years of trying to get along, they decided on a divorce. Even though they got divorced, they remained amicable towards each other. In a way their friendship became stronger after they were divorced.

While he was married, he made the transition from the DAMI-FI to the CIA. After several years of working with the CIA in the states, he began to go on missions over seas, specifically Germany and countries that were formerly behind the iron curtain. The missions into Eastern European countries often had him establishing contacts with various criminal organizations. He began his identity of Yankee John an expat American free lance operative. He did conducted various operations as a cleaner. When some criminal with connections created an incident, they called in Yankee John to solve the problems. His cover worked well because of CIA backing. The CIA supplied him with what ever he needed to get the job done. Of course as Yankee John cleaned up messes, he collected evidence on various criminal enterprises. Also due to the chaotic nature of Eastern European after the fall of the Berlin wall, some governments (such as Romania) hired him to do work for them as well. He became a deniable asset without roots in Eastern Europe.

When the divorce from Jane became final, he threw himself into his work. He moved to Berlin where he created another cover. Mike James. Another expat, only this time he worked as an entrepreneur with business interests in Eastern Europe. He became a dealer in former Soviet military hardware, since there was plenty of it sitting around for sale. The cover he used Depended on the situation and area. he would use his Mike cover when he needed to look more legitimate or when he was in Germany. Other times when he engaged in illegal activities or as a free lance cleaner, he would be Yankee John. Of course in Bucharest, he was always Yankee John.

The CIA put out a burn notice on Thomas because of him being involved in illegal unsanctioned activities. After the burn notice went out Thomas went deeper into his covers to hide any ties he had to the CIA.

Personality: Direct to a fault and boisterous when she can afford to be. If you haven't wronged her, she will treat you like an old friend. If you have, you are a bastard and you ought to be shot like a dog and left to die in the streets.

Appearance: Blond, tall, toned, somewhat attractive in a "spent all her life in bars or ships" kind of way. Prioritizes warmth and durability from her clothes above all else.

History: "I never thought my father's business was bad growing up. He just gave people what they needed. Some times men in Italy needed grain, so he brought them grain. Some times a man in Tiranda needed an antique vase and didn't want customs to bother him about it, so he brought him one. Some times, most of the time when I was younger, people needed a way out of Albania, some way to get to a better life. Then, for the right price, my father would give them a visa and they would be out of the country that night. I did realize how illegal the family business really was eventually, of course. I wasn't blind. But that didn't stop me from joining as soon as I could.

If you ever think that being the boss' daughter would send you straight to the top of the organization, don't. Oh, if you're the boss' son you'll be fine. Aleksander would have been applauded for keeping his shoes tied. But if you're his daughter? Oh, you couldn't do that. Leave it to the men, dearie, you won't break a fingernail that way. Bunch of loving pigs. But you know what? I ended up doing every goddamn job in this organization, just to prove that I could. I drove the cars. I forged the paperwork. I sailed the ships. And you know what my father did three years ago, when he decided it was time to step down? He told me it was about time I did his job too.

My father never said why he was retiring, just that his past was starting to catch up with him and he needed to get away for a while. I never pushed him for more information. After all, I've been in this business for long enough to know that there are things you'd rather not remember. Still, I kept in touch with him when I could. He moved to England, got a nice apartment, lived a lovely life. Everything you'd want out of retirement. And then, two months ago, he disappeared. No forwarding address, no police reports, he's just gone. And I... am not going to accept that. I'm going to England, and I'm going to find out what happened to him. I'll be leaving the family business behind for now, but I'm willing to leave Aleksander in charge for the time being if it means finding out what happened.

Okay, so, going over what we have so far...

Molly: You could probably afford to drop Forgery to 4 if you wanted to grab a dot in any other Investigative skill. We've discussed Magic and its uses, so you definitely do want Stability up like you have it. You should also probably talk to Tricky Dick Nixon and figure out what you two both want out of your specialties, because there's a hell of a lot of overlap there and I don't want to grab too many folks that have no real combat skills. One is fine, but the team will have trouble with more than that. He seems to be going all-in for hacker, where what we discussed you seemed more interested in being a subtle info-gathering break-in type.

Tricky Dick Nixon: Likewise, you should talk to Molly about specialties and overlap and work out what you two both are looking for out of your characters. I know you're experienced with the game but are you sure you want to be so completely noncombat - Athletics 4, no combat skills and not even any Sense Trouble?

Davin Valkri: I'm seeing here a pretty solid action type, a driver and sneak with good melee skills and ability to deal with people as long as he doesn't have to be especially nice. I like what you've got here and I can work with it.

Waffleman: Surveillance 12 is a lot! You might consider shifting one or two of those dots elsewhere unless you're totally certain that's your thing. Still, definitely an expert at watching people and poking your nose in their business. I'd also suggest picking one of Hand to Hand or Weapons - you don't really need both. (With you, I'd suggesting getting Hand to Hand up to 8 so you can get the cherry for it, or Athletics. Athletics is an important one since having Hit Threshold 4 means a 50/50 chance of getting hit on 1d6, where Hit Threshold 3 is 66% chance of getting hit.) You could probably move a dot from Bullshit Detector or Interrogation into something else if you liked.

Bendi: Definite action/wetwork type here and also very talky, and I like what I'm seeing. Plus, the part where he's a family man and what else we've discussed is very handy.

Doc Bubonic: You have a lot of low-dot areas spread out. The game tends to reward specializing more with General abilities, with the 8-dot cherries and all, so I want you to be aware of that. I also want you to be sure of not doing Athletics 8, for the reasons I noted above. I also see a lot of overlap in Investigative skills with Arash, so you might want to talk to Bendi about where you two plan to focus.

Lurks: Action pilot/driver smuggler is a definite niche and one I think you're handling well here. I could see some overlap with Davin, but I feel like you two are filling out different areas thatj ust happen to overlap some. Pretty good spread on your investigatives, too. I like what you have so far.

I shimmied a few points around - I want to be more of an infiltrator than a hacker anyway, so I took out my digital intrusion, gave myself better disguise and some hand to hand skill so as to be able to infiltrate more effectively and defend myself without a weapon. I also shimmied one point out of Forgery and put it into Negotiation so that I can bluff a bit if I do get caught.

True enough on all counts. I went with the lack of Sense Trouble almost a little intentionally. Honestly it was the Gambling that outbalances everything, and we already have a proper Driver in Davin Valkiri's character so I can make some quick changed.

I swapped my Infiltration focus for Disguise, since that dovetails with the thing I PM'd you about, bumped Athletics to 8 (he does bike a lot), and added more shooting, added a touch of Sense Trouble as well. Upped his health stats. Shifted my dot in Traffic Analysis (which along with Research is more an intel analyst thing) to Pharmacy, again dovetails with the thing I PM'd you about. Basically removed Gambling from the concept though to make all this work alas, but still, should look a bit better and have a sidebar. Looking for the type of active hacker we see a lot more now adays: A lot of stuff is social engineering, so adjusted some of my investigative skills as well to match.

Let me know Molly or Mors is I can try and divide it a bit more off.

1. Pick three of your Investigative Abilities each. You will receive a personalized clue for those before the game starts.

Three investigative skills: occult studies, forgery, and history.

Rumors:

Archer - I heard he once killed a man for insulting his horse.

Caroline Hardison is the next link in a trail I've been following from my grandfather's journal. She either has, or has a lead on, something that my grandfather spent his life looking for.

Rumor:
Cade - Seems one of them "pop stars" is hiding around town, a real heart-stopper of a guy from Tokyo. Least, that's what the salon gossips've told me. You know how they get sometimes.

Caroline Hardison has come across an ornate locket, one traced to the aftermath of Stalingrad. Belonging, it seems, to a veteran of said battle and one of Arash's close friends at the old Soviet embassy. Said friend is not long for this world, and Arash would like to get it back to him. But it may hold more than just sentimental value...

Also, he wants to show off his rifle and get a high estimate for its value. For pride's sake more than anything.

Rumor

Alarune - Wasn't she the one behind the mass forgery of Swiss bonds a couple years ago?

SHOOT ME IN THE GODDAMNED FACE
WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?!
Thanks, Mors! Let's go into the darkness together!

Investigative Skills: Criminology, Tradecraft, Electronic Surveillance

Rumor: Firebird: You don't walk away from the KGB and the Ukrainian mob without either a lot of blood or a lot of secrets. I wonder which one this particular Firebird's pyre is made from?

Why Caroline Hardison: She was one of the POIs on my to-do list before TEMPORA was revealed and I became...voluntarily unbusy. Did you know that there's a thriving art-smuggling business out of the Middle East? Some of them want to protect their old vases and poo poo, and some of them want to make money for ISIS. Hardison has had contact with one, but I wasn't able to confirm whether it's on the active-support-of-hostiles side or the criminal-but-vaguely-benign side. And while I'm not part of DI anymore, I don't like leaving things half finished. Professional pride, not cricket, principle of the thing, you understand.

Rumor: Luna. "False flag" gets tossed around a lot. Hell, I'm the one tossing it around so take my word with a grain of salt, but I've got good intel this sabbatical is directly related to what happened in Oregon. As it turns out, America isn't so different from Russia, we're all in the same world of shadows, yeah?

As for Hardison, well, as it happens, I've been tracking down a few high-profile names that've gone dark like myself. Did you know "Archer", the man single-handedly responsible for every headache the FSB has ever had in Afghanistan, is in Morocco? Around the same time that we have ex-MI6, the cobbler "Alraune", and aforementioned aspiring novelist. This means Hardison is someone worth meeting, especially if it gets me to what I need.
