They pulled out of WRC before the picture even, so they're taking credit for the M-Sport built cars. To be fair, the engines are still Ecoboost, same as the Motorbase built BTCC Focii.

I don't think Mercedes is doing it either, if anything they'll put more into IMSA (as in, support Penske in DPi in 2018). I still think if FCA wants to establish Alfa they do so with IndyCar, but that's just me.

It might be Toyota if they want bang-for-buck, but that goes along with WEC (which I know is an engineering project) and WRC (unsure). Wonder how their NASCAR adventure has been helping them, I feel like they perhaps had better brand recognition in the mid-1990s because back then everything was white/orange/red and TOYOTA all over.

all said I'm excited still for IndyCar and if anybody has any tips on finding the 1:64 diecasts I'm all ears.

Toyota post-IMSA, Off Road racing seems to be the story of entering a series just as it's entering it's downward spiral.

They timed going to CART just as the "Split" happened. With cup? they went right as that bubble was popping.

I do think that Toyota's ads for Cup kinda miss the mark often. The CART ads were kinda fun, highlighted the technological aspect of their involvment in the series:

It'll be interesting to see how that affects the racing. Also very glad they're putting in a good drainage system. As much as I loved the rain delay antics last year, racing is more betterer.

If we could somehow figure out how to do oval racing in the wet without killing everyone...jesus, every non-oval series would just go bankrupt.

Isn't the core problem with that the sheer forces involved in modern oval racing being incompatible with any sort of tread blocks? For that matter, what was the last 500 winner to have any real tread on the tires? Clark's Lotus 38? Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't want so much as a sprinkle under those tires, but it seems like downforce and full slicks came hand in hand.

You could probably string together a few laps with road course levels of downforce, but you'd have 2005 USGP levels of tire wear.

I mean they could do it, they would just go slow as hell. Also the racing would blow rear end because rooster tails+limited grooves on ovals would mean nobody would even get close to each other. Thats basically what happens when it rains at the Daytona 24, everyone spaces out perfectly equidistant to each other going through the banking.

95 they were testing short tracks and road courses for rain. Only road courses were deemed safe to drive in. I think it's time to try it again with 20 more years of tire tech advances. Hell Michelin has made an intermediate tire into a slick though loads on a p1 car and a cup car a little different.

Kind of a random choice for an official upload there.

2002 CART was weird to watch at the time. I was a pretty casual viewer then and had no idea how badly CART was doing behind the scenes, but it was obvious from the start of that season that this was not a healthy racing series. The 18-car grid in the first race (with a bunch of major sponsors missing from the cars that were there) was a monumentally sad sight, and Eurosport's coverage had gone from pretty decent (most races shown live, here in we even got Finnish commentary for many of the 2001 races) to "whatever, just show the highlights at 1 AM a week later" as they had realized the situation.

Gotta say though, those are still some really good-looking race cars. I especially like the KOOL schemes.

Huh, I forgot PacWest was still around at the start of 2002. I guess there were 20 cars on the grid in Mexico, then, which was still a pretty sorry sight compared to the previous year's 26-car field.

PacWest obviously never quite recovered from appearing in Driven.

Sigma Autosport also folded up after 5 races, which is why Ganassi picked up Dixon to keep the field at 18, which was the series contractual minimum for the races.

Much less of an accident than Helio's career at Penske. People knew Dixon was really talented so he probably would've been picked up by one of the big teams eventually.

It's unfair that his results that season don't really reflect how well he performed. I think in the Rookie championship he finished behind both Carpantier and Salles, both of whom didn't drive nearly as well.
