I only did a little cosplay sewing on the side and have mostly made dresses. Attempted a corset exactly once. Getting things to fit right is just a matter of not rushing (plan to finish a week before an event, not the night before), not shorting your allowances (buy enough material, this is another "trying to go cheap makes things harder" thing), and pinning a fit before sewing (you're gonna get poked, deal with it).

Even using expensive materials can make things difficult, it just depends on the nature of the fabric and what you are making. Hardest cosplay I ever did was Dante from DMC 3 because sewing that jacket outta vinyl was hard as gently caress. Plus the material cost like 25 bucks a meter.

Yeah, expensive materials can sometimes be hard to work with. It's pretty important to research the materials and methods you'll use before you do things.

Took me forever to find these old pics from Tekko 2016 (Imgur's user interface and searching sucks!). Enjoy!               The best part about the Cubone was that they had an mp3 of the Lavender Town Theme on Loop playing around them at all times.

it was weird when I went to a fabric store to buy the stuff for my nico costume and discovered that like half of the cheap fabrics suitable for a rarely-worn costume rather than actual clothing were Yaya Han-branded. OK, "half" is overstating it, but pretty much all the stretch vinyl, and a few other things besides.

Very thin stuff, but it worked easily and looked good. I might worry about its durability if I were planning on wearing the costume more than a handful of times.
