As the self proclaimed leader of the marine corpse forces here in GIP, I happily accept this Army hand-me-down thread and will endeavor to treat it with the same amount of respect Marines give to minorities and transgendered Filipino prostitutes.

I accepted a long time ago that the only things I could change were what fell under my umbrella of influence. As I picked up more rank, my umbrella got bigger and what I could change affected more people. In the grand scheme of things my contributions are absolutely insignificant. But they aren't insignificant to the dozens of people who've contacted me over the years to say how much they appreciated how much I did to make their time in less lovely.

And then for some reason they decided to take out the last one four years later and I got another half day off. That equals one sick day per five years. Pretty sweet if you ask me. I had my wisdom teeth pulled out on ship while underway at 36. I had to hold onto the light for the dentist because the ship rocking kept moving it back and forth. It felt like the sketchiest Tijuana back alley operation I'd ever seen. Also took me two weeks to recover from because I am old and they cut my jaw muscles all up to get to the bottom roots.

I spent three years assigned to an amphib. Our last visit to Australia we had an Osprey crash into our flight deck and roll into the ocean. We pulled everyone out of the drink except 3. The pilot, one of the crew chiefs, and the most junior artilleryman in the battery. The Marines were pretending to do embassy reinforcement and were on their way back. I stood out on the flight deck and watched several thousand aircraft land in those three years. Conditions couldn't have been any more perfect for flight and to this day I still don't know why it crashed.

J.A.B.C. posted:So, my grandfather just passed away. He had a stroke a few weeks ago, was recovering up until this morning, and then fainted. Blood pressure dropped, organs started failing, and he slipped into a coma. He passed about an hour ago. Immediate family ( SPOUSE, mother, father, brother, sister, son, or daughter) are the only family that commanders MUST allow a service member emergency leave for (at least in the Marine Corps). However, the vast majority of the time accommodations are made for the grieving service member because the hit to unit morale otherwise is usually pretty severe. It seems silly that you wouldn't be able to go to the funeral and meet up with everyone afterwards. I would have just had you pack your poo poo and have it sent out with your platoon sergeant or whoever and had you meet your gear in the field. PathAsc posted:The MSF course was cool because I watched a dude bring his new cruiser and scrape the goddamn hell out of his chrome bars on the bottom trying to do the figure 8 lol I took the MSF Basic Riders course through a Harley dealership while on PCS leave coming from overseas. I wouldn't have normally used the Harley store but the state run courses wouldn't guarantee me a seat far enough out for me to plan my trip around. I had ridden motorcycles a decade before but realized I was far too stupid to own a bike in my mid 20s. I went into the course thinking it'd be a check in the box for me to register the bike on base. Turns out it is a good course and I took a lot away from it. Maybe it was being the only man in the class but it felt like the students were all open to learning and the instructor explained everything until we all understood. We got a ton of riding in and they provided lovely beatup harleys to use so no one had to worry about dropping their own bikes. I came away a lot more confident in my low speed maneuverability which I put to use every day in SoCal traffic. Hekk fucked around with this message at 20:21 on Mar 5, 2019 |

I will just say that for a long period of time the uniform regs prohibited athletic shorts anywhere except physical training.
