So I used to play a bunch of SWAT 4 with my wife and my friends. It scratched an itch no other game really did, and it was fun to play in 8 person coop to slowly slice apart buildings by wedging doors and knocking out a room after a room. Especially Stetchkov Syndicate that added a gently caress ton of maps, and then Elite Force mod.
I originally backed a game called Ready or Not long long time ago as they promised to fulfill that same niche of police gaming that really no other game does. It looked good, then went into development hell and they turned into PVP and went real crazy. Then, all of a sudden, a week ago, they release into steam in a coop only state and...

It's good! Real good! Dunno what the gently caress happened, but the game really pulled up and is SWAT 5 in all but name. Devs promise female officer, map tools, and extensive steam workshop modding. And lots of other features. If they hold on to those, the replayability of this game will be in the stratosphere easily.
I made a little thread and discord about it and we've been hammering it ever since together.
https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3988065

But there's probably people in this thread that played Swat 4 back in the day, Check this game out.

Ok, you’ve piqued my interest. I really enjoyed SWAT 4 back in 2005 and while I never played multiplayer (because my copy was :filez:, ban me from beyond the grave Lowtax) I could see how this would be super fun. As it turns out I’m off all this upcoming week so I’d love to join in and play with you and whoever else is into it. Thanks for putting this out there!

K:D tactic: Play as the tank gunner in Hell Let Loose. Just fire HE any time you think maybe you saw something or if a hedge row doesn't have friendlies in it, or if you see a house, or if you heard something maybe. Walk out having positively seen 10-ish infantry kills, but with 25+ infantry kills in reality based on all the dudes you killed in bushes or rooms you never saw. Bonus if you fire blind, and see a stahlhelm go sailing through the air afterward.

The downside: die in a tank and spend 5 minutes getting back to the fight whereas infantry just respawn like roaches at the front lines.

To piggy back off of this Hell Let Loose is a lot of fun and makes team work very easy. It's harder to NOT cooperate with all the available tools like pings, mark markers, command chat, etc etc.
We've been playing on a three man tank crew for the past days and doing tank combat while coordinating with friendly tanks and the commander of our team, and friendly infantry crawling all around us, is a lot of fun and it's funny to exchange quips with the riflemen outside your tank with proximity chat.

Here's some screenshots of us using a 76mm Sherman to bag kitty cats.
These are all from my perspective as the tank commander. The TC has no weapons, only binoculars, a good map, map tools, and command chat. What makes HLL even better is that they gave the driver the hull MG so that he isn't just driving, the gunner obviously has cannon and coax, but also: the team shares all the kills. I can read the map as a commander and when Muhlump's hosing stahlhelms on the street, I get kills too.

The driver has to use gears and fairly clunky turning, these tanks don't move like BF1942 tanks. But it's also a good thing, it forces the tank to be careful of where it moves, and doesn't allow the crew just willy nilly scoot around. It's really funny to tangle in the bocage with enemy tanks and do a blistering 22mph flanking maneuver and nail them.

As a tank commander you can get pretty task saturated with spotting, giving the driver instructions, reading the map, and using command chat, but it's like a fun task saturation when your crew is yelling at you and the driver spots the enemy tank since you are face down in a map, and the gunner nails the Panzer 4 before you even had the chance to participate and then you just say "crew good job, driver go forward".

If you collect enough clues and arrest enough people, it outweighs things like committing murder or shooting another cop at end of mission.

Now if you kill a guy and don’t even seize his property? Failure.

I played a bunch of Swat 2. Really enjoyed the puzzle aspect of the missions. The slight variations that could happen on each mission were basically my first exposure to roguelike concepts.

I think it might also be where I get my urge to play videogames as nonlethaly as possible.

One massively underexplored what if is, if Roberta and Ken Williams had been able to keep the incredible culture of Sierra and Sierra On-Line alive throughout their IPO and eventual purchase. Or if they hadn't been bought out by the crooks at CUC.

I genuinely think if Sierra had been intact past the mid 1990s, they would have been a force for good in the industry and a counter-weight to EA and Activision's blackhearted bottom line focus. They had a fantastic creative culture, and a ridiculously vast and varied catalog of games and software, from flight simulators (Red Baron) to cheesy soft-core porn adventures (Leisure Suit Larry), the best graphical adventures around at the time (Hero's Quest, Space Quest, King's Quest), educational stuff (Dr Brain), and the absolute best racing simulations of its time (the Papyrus games).

I hate that the business side of things squashed everything that was good about them.

Oh they're completely killing it at retirement, don't worry. Literally sailing around the world and writing books about it.

Largely, they were burnt out, a board member brought in a software company (CUC) to give them a huge buyout offer ($1.5b), then became CEO. It turns out they were hiding losses at a Sunbeam/Dunlap level, in addition to breaking all their promises as to how tehy'd run things.

Valve struggled to find a publisher, as many believed the game was too ambitious for a first-time developer. Sierra On-Line signed Valve for a one-game deal as it was interested in making a 3D action game, especially one based on the Quake engine.[13] Valve first showed Half-Life in early 1997; it was a success at E3 that year, where Valve demonstrated the animation and artificial intelligence.[14] Novel features of the artificial intelligence included fear and pack behavior.[15]

Unmentioned here- Sierra On-Line (I just realized their abbreviation is the very unfortunate SOL) released their own in-house attempt at a 3D game a month later, the critically savaged Quest for Glory 5. I don't know that they'd have been succesful in keeping Newell and Valve in-house after that, even in the sunniest of what-ifs, but imagine if they had.

Activision finally fixed their update poo poo for Warzone, thank gently caress. When I first played it, there was a 100gb "patch" at least weekly. Now they're just quick updates in the menu itself, doesn't even register as an update on the xbox unless there's a major change.

The big "patches" were pretty much why I quit the first time, started again last month because my brother and I don't have a lot of shared titles and Warzone is still free. Only drat thing I'm good at is Plunder, but I'm loving great at it.

I wasted a lot of time with WoW back during the vanilla/Burning Crusade/Wrath of the Lich King eras. Kinda lost interest after that with some expansions passing me by completely.

Had I been able to keep the original WoW account that I used back then I might have sold it instead of deleted, but it got hacked at some point years ago and, I'm pretty sure, used to run gold farming bots. It got banned and I was never able to retrieve it.

It's just been one story after another lately about how Blizzard is a poo poo company with toxic/racist work culture so not really feeling comfortable giving them any more money. They seem to have more than enough of it anyway.

Classic WoW launch, that was the last time I seriously, heavily invested into Blizz games. The recordings of my journey to 60 is a mid life crisis historical mountain.

A lil after that I also paypigged my way into a no-minion mage deck in Hearthstone. Didn't even take much time, just boom my wallet went in and my deck was still obsoleted in like 5 months so I needed to put more money in and I was like nah.
