I really liked his old Wonder Man comic from the '90s. I see the only thing he's done in recent years seems to be anime stuff. Way to challenge that stereotype.

He also had a run on Prime. Which really paints that whole concept in a completely different light. Yuck.

EDIT: Actually clicking on some of these books I'm not familiar with, this guy has written a lot of stuff seemingly featuring child characters. This is pretty goddamn disturbing.

Gerard Jones wrote Justice League Europe with Keith Giffen after J.M. DeMatteis left, around 1989, and then took over the title himself after Giffen left as well, after the big "Breakdowns" storyline. I think he wrote it solo from #37 to #68, which included a title change to Justice League International in there.

I believe he also wrote the 1990 Green Lantern relaunch, and at least one book on the history of superhero comics.

The last time he wrote for either of the Big 2 seems to be for DC in 2003. Seems most of his Big 2 was for DC on Green Lantern related stuff. And this doesn't really hurt anyone's rep but his.

What's the earliest story where magic is explicitly identified as something Superman can't defend against? Further to that, when did magic become an explicit "weakness" for him (i.e. "the only things that can stop Superman are kryptonite, red sun radiation and magic") rather than just something he was no more invulnerable to than any normal person?

Sorry to bring this back up, but I'm catching up on this thread and it looks like no one actually answered this question.

As far as I can tell, the first time that it is explicitly said on the page that Superman is vulnerable to magic is 1960's Justice League of America #2, "The Secret of the Sinister Sorcerers," in which a trio of evil magicians led by Simon Magus cause all technology on Earth to cease to work.

Gerard Jones wrote quite a bit of stuff for Marvel and DC in the early/mid 1990s, most significantly Green Lantern/GL Mosiac/Guy Gardner, several years of Justice League Europe (first with Giffen, then solo), the whole of Wonder Man's solo series and a big chunk of Marvel 2099, then he was a co-founder of the Ultraverse line where the majority of his "young hero" stuff came out in the form of Prime and Freex.

He spent the back half of the 1990s/early 2000s mostly doing localization for manga, and put out a couple of books in the 2000s: Men of Tomorrow, which is one of the better pop non-fiction histories of the comics industry, and Killing Monsters, which is probably the thing (aside from Prime maybe but I remember Prime handling the whole "teenager in a man's body" thing more tastefully than say Johns's JSA) that will be the grossest to read in hindsight after all of this stuff, as it's a non-fiction treatise on how fantasy violence and monsters are an invaluable part of childhood, allowing youngsters to process and cope with fear and trauma. It's been awhile since I read it, but in addition to citing third party research and conducting interviews with psychologists and educators, I remember a fair bit of "Jones runs workshops and interviews with little kids on how they consume media" in the text too.

I always felt Jones was a bit of an unsung talent of 1990s comics, though I haven't revisited much of his work in the present. I read and enjoyed both of his non-fiction books though. It's terrible that this is how many modern readers are first hearing about him, and this obviously taints (or destroys) any appreciation of his work people may have.

(Still less of a creep than that Alan Moore though, am I right?)

I have the issue Wikipedia cites, so I'll look into it as soon as I feel like waking up my cat out of my lap so I can get the issues in question.

Edit: All right, I checked out both the issue Wikipedia cites (Superman vol 1 #131) and Justice League #2 to compare results. I also talked it over with my pal Calamity Jon Morris, the author of the Chronological Superman blog who was my original source on that idea anyway.

Basically, here's what's up: the story Wikipedia is citing is "The Menace of Mr Mxyzptlk," which is Mxy's reintroduction for the Silver Age. It has Superman saying he can't stop Mr Mxyzptlk's magic, but at no point is he directly affected by it, nor does he say that magic would hurt him. This is typical of Mxy stories from this era and before.

However, the Justice League story, from less than a year after the Mxyzptlk story, has Superman explicitly saying in panel one of page seven, "Come to think of it, one of the things that robs me of my super-powers is...a magic spell!"

So "unable to stop magic" vs "magic robs me of my powers" may seem like splitting hairs, so accept whatever you want. Either way, this pegs it to relatively early in Superman's Silver Age era.

BUT--I will say that as late as August 1958's Action Comics #243, "The Lady and the Lion," the infamous lion-headed Superman story (well, the FIRST one), Circe is only able to transform Superman into a beast by lacing a magic potion with kryptonite (which leads Superman to assume she was from Krypton). By the time they repeat the concept again a few years later, Circe doesn't need the kryptonite to affect Superman.
