grack posted:So next step is fixing St. Louis' craptastic goaltending, right? This more than coaching seems to be the problem to me, based solely on stats because I haven't watched the Blues hardly at all. They have 4th fewest shots on goal allowed, but are last in save %.

I hear this Ben Bishop is being shopped. Maybe we can trade him for a 3rd rounder again.

Zodijackylite posted:loving finally! Maybe they should've fired the guy who thought Jake Allen and [insert backup goalie here] was a good tandem to start the season. It was not. He also signed the rapidly and seriously declining Steen to a multi year deal, traded away Oshie for jack poo poo, lost Backes and didn't replace him, signed Jake Allen long term for no apparent reason and mangled the coaching job beyond recognition. Hitch was not and is not the problem in St. Louis. Despite all this Hitch still coached them to a top 5 possession team, not his fault they have the 3rd worst save percentage of all teams.

Doug Armstrong sucks but do not blame him for Backes leaving. I would have been seriously pissed if he gave him the contract the Bruins gave him. Seriously, look at the difference between last year's team and this year's team: GONE: David Backes Troy Brouwer Steve Ott (lol) Brian Elliott ADDED: David Perron Carter Hutton Backes is a definite minus for this year and maybe next year, but David Perron has been playing way better than Brouwer. Ott being gone is addition by subtraction and Brian Elliott has been benched in favor of Chad Johnson. Jake Allen has completely fallen off a cliff in a way that seems attributable to a collapse in defensive systems (hello departure of Brad Shaw to Columbus!). The main issue with the team from my eye test is that they look like they have no idea what they're doing. Team defense is non-existent and players frequently are unable to complete simple passes. Their offensive system consisted of dump and chase and cycling the puck around the perimeter. This worked when they were winning board battles but they never win those this year and spend almost no time in the opponent's zone until they're down 5-1 and the opponents throw their lovely players on the ice, allowing the Blues to lose 5-3. Oh he shouldn't have kept Backes, but not solving the hole he left is an issue.

I think it's fair to say that St. Louis has issues in a number of places but look on the bright side - you're not Canucks' fans!

AHHHH AFTER 10,000 YEARS I'M FREE Oh who am I kidding, even though the coaching system has obviously been an issue, this team is still underperforming like crazy so I don't really expect much of a rebound here with the Power Ranger Yeo.

Also, can anyone (with a totally serious face) explain to me the rationale behind the victory lap? Like, we're going to fire him and we have his replacement ready but, nah, one more year.

Also apparently Brodeur and Ty Conklin are sharing goalie coach duties, so that sure is a thing that is happening.

Just start registering every puck anywhere near the net as a shot. That'll bulk up that save % real fast.

Both the Blues and Devils would be so much better off today if they'd just had the guts to say no to Marty just once in the last 8 years. He's been objectively terrible at everything he's done since about 2009, why does he keep getting opportunity after opportunity to royally gently caress up consequence free?

in very rare positive fancy cats news, Huberdeau and Barkov both shed the non-contact jerseys. Barkov is skating with Jagr and Bjugstad so he should be back within a couple weeks. Huberdeau is eyeing week 1 of March. maybe their season is hosed but at least the last months can be more fun

On the other hand the devils waiting so long meant they could get Schneider and really only lose out on a couple years of really great goaltending between the start of Marty's serious decline and the rise of Schneider's awesomeness (notwithstanding this season).
