For those who haven't been keeping up with Dick Tracy, the current team loves one thing above all else: Referencing old Dick Tracy characters. But second to that is crossovers. When Little Orphan Annie was cancelled mid-story the characters appeared in Dick Tracy to resolve it, and ever since then Annie, Warbucks, etc. have been recurring Dick Tracy characters. The Great Am was originally a Little Orphan Annie character, a mysterious immortal being who may or may not be God. The Spirit is from his own comic.

There have also been crossovers and references to The Phantom, Alley Oop and On The FastRack and WWE, which also means that Dick Tracy takes place in the same world as Safe Havens and Mary Worth. And I can pretty much guarantee that I'm missing some stuff here, because Staton and Curtis do not miss a chance for a reference.

gleebster posted:

You forget the most important cross-over of all: Funky Winkerbean! In his own strip, Tracy happened to trip up a bank robbery in Cancerview. In Batiuk's strip, Dick Tracy helped point out to the regular characters where some old comic books that had been police evidence were being auctioned.
Oh yeah. Which also means that Crankshaft is also in the same universe, but offset by ten years while also being set in the present. I kind of want a direct Dick Tracy/Crankshaft crossover now just to add to the confusion of that temporal anomaly.

Johnny Walker posted:

Didn't Dick Tracy have an off-panel Popeye appearance as well?

It's an edit. The original is '"Love is when two people who care for each other get confused." - Bob Schneider'. I have no idea what that means though.

Even though it's so often disappointing, I still get excited whenever I see a character I like reappear in this comic. I don't even remember what's going on in the current story most of the time, but I keep reading it and expecting it to be good.

I pay Comics Kingdom to resize their comics. But they have good comics and a sizable vintage section, so...

It's just a pity that they take a million years to load. Their old site loaded almost instantly, the new one leaves me staring at spinning circles for way too long. It makes going back through their archives incredibly irritating.

I've got to say though, as a subscriber, the new GoComics looks pretty good to me. I can still right-click to save or copy the URL of comics, and if you click a comic to go to its actual page, then double-click it and copy, you get a transcription of the dialogue. For example, when I copy this Adam@Home

I get this in my clipboard

GoComics posted:

Katy: Mom, dad hurt his back again.
Katy: Oh no! It was probably all that shoveling. Is he upstairs?
Katy: No. He's still on the sidewalk.
Clayton: Just get on and I can drag you back.
Adam: Leave me, child! Let the scavengers take me!

So that's pretty handy. I especially like that it makes it so easy to find out the characters' names. And it still does the thing where it only loads comics that have updated that day until you click, so you're not wasting time loading the same weeklies every day. Plus the layout and design is much simpler and cleaner. The front page is a bit of a mess, but since I generally go straight to one of my "my comics" pages it's not really an issue.

In fact, I can't really see any down sides to the new version of the site. I haven't had much of a chance to go over it in detail yet, but the stuff I use regularly is all looking good, so if any problems exist they're in places where I'm not going to notice them much.

For a start, Aries currently consists of five stars, not four. It has contained more stars than that in the past as stars, rather than being fixed pin-pricks in the sphere of the sky through which we can see God, are burning nuclear arsenals whirling about an expanding universe with no regard for artistic licenses. Aries was also originally the Field Worker, and probably shifted into a ram due to changes in agrarian practices or as the constellation moved to cultures with more of a focus on husbandry. To boot, traditionally the ram is depicted as being seated to accommodate for there being no 'limb stars'.

On the other hand, constellations don't actually look like anything. Show someone an unfamiliar constellation and ask them what they think it is and they're never going to guess it in a million years. I mean, even with the lines drawn on:
