Like, is it worse than:

FF7: "You are an eco-terrorist//freedom fighter with AMNESIA, but actually you're a clone struggling with identity theft and have to fight a mutant elder god, its psychotic samurai sword wielding spawn, and eventually a giant meteor angel"

FF8: "You are brooding narcoleptic youth in Special Forces Black Ops academy sent out to save the world from a moon witch trying to destroy time itself" (this is my most bare bones assessment, I personally never made it past disc 2 in like 4 attempts, junctioning is not fun)

FF9: "You are a monkey pirate and a spooky doll flying around a fantasy wonderland that is constantly besieged by an army of magic robots created by your evil big brother and your big black leather-daddy until you realize "Yikes, I'm actual the Angel of Death but I have AMNESIA!"

FFX: "I am budding sportsball superstar from the hyper futuristic past until I get swept up to the distant future where everyone lives on the beach and I have to drag my girlfriend to church all over the world until she's strong enough to kill herself in the most ludicrous way possible fighting a giant space whale that is actually the ghost of my dad and oh yeah I'm not even alive I'm like the dream of a ghost from hundreds of years ago..."

Like, I don't want spoilers, but people saying the story is bad have to mean "The story is presented in a very indirect and unsatisfying way" because I refuse to believe the plot is somehow dumber/more farcical/less grounded than any of those listed above. I don't play MMO's anymore and FFXII's cast just bored me to tears and the creeeeeeeeeeepy response to Lightning put me off the XIII trilogy forever (I can't stand linearity or time management in my RPG's so...)

And the whole "Hold X to auto-attack your through every fight" thing is just a different way of saying "the game has a combat system that I choose to ignore", but from what I hear FFXV is like 90% about the combat, so IDK? I still want to play it, but I'm happy to wait for the storyline DLC.

I know Bloodborne is a goon favorite, what is a good price for the Game + DLC that I should look out for?

Can anyone explain why FBW keeps getting put off? It happened with stick also, I dont understand why the South Park games see constant delays when thru look like relatively simple games.

The South Park team, believe it or not, or staunch perfectionists and said in more than one interview that their dev team really took the criticisms of SoT to heart and are dedicated to releasing a good game that is fun, and since its not really time sensitive or a cash grab pertaining to a current social trend, they are under no pressure at all to rush it out. South Park might not have Simpsons/Family Guy money but they certainly aren't hurting and SoT was warmly recieved, with all its criticisms boiling down to "This is game is actually really fun and good, but it's just too easy" so if I had to guess based off that, they are probably working out balancing issues and bugs related to that.

Having a plot based on comic superheroes and their ridiculous sequel plans could get stale if they wait too long. Like DC has almost given up already.

Um, yeah, but Disney Marvel has releases planned for at least the next 3 years, so I don't think they are in any danger. People are buying this because its South Park, not because it makes fun of super-heroes. The game could be about anything and it will still sell well because they have a built in fan base who've been rabid for like 10-15 years and now we're all old enough to buy things we like with our own money.

Bioshock 1 was a hallmark moment in FPS gaming and while it was a spiritual successor to the System Shock games, it was Bioshock that actually had a palpable impact on triple AAA FPS releases for the next decade to come and edgelords who act like the storyline isn't good or innovative in its exploration of player agency are insufferable fart smellers and think we're all plebs for not having suffered through the atmospheric yet clunky, unintuitive mess that is SS2.

Bioshock 2 has an awesome combat system, but its storyline comes broken out of the box, because it takes Rapture as we knew it and tries to act like Sofia Lamb mattered at all, and her absence from Bioshock 1 feels really blatant after the fact. Combine that with the fact they changed Big Sister from a single persistent NPC (a cool and good thing) to just another kind of production line Big Daddy (a lame and bad thing) and you end up with what amounts to a giant DLC for Bioshock 1 that never gets to be its own thing.

Bioshock Infinite had a great game system and the wide open (if redundant) two-tiered arena design and skylines were a welcome change from the claustrophobic Rapture, but its storyline is an embarrassing pastiche of white guilt, slavery metaphors that fall flat because they game tries to steer you away from sympathizing with all the black scientists and engineers ending up as maids and busboys and literal Lynch mob victims with some namby-pamby "two wrongs don't make a right" bullshit and its sci-fi storyline trips over its own feet constantly and fails to follow the rules it attempts to carefully lay out for itself, and this is before the blatant character assassination of Return to Rapture.

All this could be forgiven if they left graphical representation of gun modifications in, but sadly only OG Bioshock felt like decorating the guns that take up half your screen for the whole game was worth it (IDIOTS SAVAGES IDIOTS)...

Uh, it's probably not worth an archives upgrade, but the Bioshock threads here on SA were filled with goons going "this is babies' first agency exploration, how could you be impressed by this drivel, It's so obviously telegraphed when you stop and think about it and SS2 did all this poo poo years ago anyway!". and when Bioshock 2/Infinite came out all of those talking points get dragged out like loving clockwork, because if there is one thing that just triggers the poo poo out of armchair game devs it's, uh, really good, polished products getting the recognition they deserve?

The irony is everything they acted like was true of Bioshock 1 was basically exactly what WAS wrong with Infinite.

What? Bioshock is blatantly about Randian ideals pushed to their extremes. They weren't subtle about this at any point in production. To have the same world but just replacing it with communism doesn't make sense because no part of the world is built upon that.

Like I know gamers reject any attempt to actually analyze games like one would any other medium but man Bioshock so blatantly and unsubtly was trying to push it's themes to the degree that the entire world they created was built upon them.

This is I think why even the grounded political aspects of Infinite fall flat, because while in a vacuum you can argue for things like free market and/or socialism because they only breakdown when you apply the human conditions of fear and greed... nationalism, racism, Jingoism and xenophobia literally don't have any positive applications in the real world and so the entire city of Columbia being based on that kind of doesn't make any sense from, like, anyone's perspective at all, unless you are just supposed to tacitly suggest that racism has its place (you aren't, Infinite is very dumb).

In terms of Open-World superhero franchises we have:

Crackdown
Saint's Row 4
Hulk: Ultimate Destruction
Prototype
Infamous
Spider-Man
Arkham Batmans

With Honorable Mentions to
The Witcher 3
Horizon: Zero Dawn, since I think it looks different enough from traditional 3rd person action games

Ironically I think the two games that over saturated this genre (Assassin's Creed & GTA: Online) aren't even special super hero games but there is soooooooooo much content and it's all just hamster wheel bullshit that ever really goes anywhere.

Super hero games tend to emphasize the players ability to move through the environment, which is why the Witcher 3 and Horizon aren't really in the same vein. I will usually enjoy any game that lets you jump really high or run really fast if it looks cool enough. Driving is boring and even GTA: O agrees because all the most expensive vehicles are the ones that break the regular rules of driving.

So what is the evolution of the this genre? Off the top of my head:

Fully Destructible Environments for everything, so I can carve out cannons with my laser eyes

Interplanetary travel: I think being a hero that had a different set of powers or moves depending on the sun//atmosphere//gravity of different planets, coupled with fighting different species and cities having distinct architecture would be awesome. Not like No Man's Sky, just like 4 detailed ones would be enough

Better Combat Systems: Just give a superhero game with devil may cry's combat system and Prototype's movement system and one or two giant tentacle attacks and then give me a legion of doom set of boss fights to work my way through, like Pokémon gyms but otherwise super villains

Or by evolution do you mean "The Witcher 3 but with like really good combat" because that would be amazing and I'm a Witcher 3 combat apologist.

Bloodborne is much more of a character action game than a typical ARPG. Quick stepping, Rallying for health and parrying are all very engaging and provide great feedback so you always have a good idea of what you're doing.

Until Bloodborne, my favorite games were Devil May Cry (1/3/4), Bayonetta, and Metal Gear Rising. I only got halfway through Dark Souls and think it's ok but not enough to finish it, and haven't played the rest of the series.

For $8 just try it instead of a couple of sodas later.

Literally every single time you pick up an item if you are already at max there is an unskippable pop up that tells you that it is being sent to storage, and when you are shopping for consumables the total you have in your storage appears directly beneath the total in your inventory. The only little symbol I know is the one that says its saving your game.

Also yeah blood vials and bullets stop being an issue after the first two bosses. By then, just level up normally and then spend all your change on blood and bullets.
