Watched four movies this weekend, one theater, three streamed. Many have given accurate opinions about these flicks so just a quick $.02 from me. The Gorge - Very fun and I thought well acted. I was thoroughly entertained and so were my wife and daughter. Of course you know "who" was behind it in general. 4/5 A Working Man - Standard Jason Statham beat-em-up. Are there any movies he makes where his family situation is different? 3/5 Ad Astra - Good Acting and far out story. The positive reviewers of pages previous were pretty spot-on about this one. 4.5/5 Coherence - Wow! What an interesting concept. I loved this movie! I literally find it hard to believe how micro the budget was. The actors must have worked for zilch. 5/5 Thank you goon movie-watching universe for some killer recommendations!

Apocalypse Now (1979). Not sure how to rate this movie. I "liked" it about as much as you can like a movie of this kind. A very interesting study on PTSD and how people deal with the trauma and horrors of war in different ways. The film definitely does not change my mind in the slightest that Vietnam is one of the worst (modern) sins of our lovely empire, but it is emphatic (and this is not a new revelation, of course) that soldiers are as much of a victim/prisoner of the military-industrial complex as the victims of empire - the Vietnamese and Cambodians - themselves.

Air Force One (1997): C+ Although I know things have changed a lot politically since my childhood, the differences never really hit home for me until watching this movie. Air Force One inhabits a world where the US "does not negotiate with terrorists", puts "what's right" over political convenience, and still has a lot of awe for the office of president. In 2025, all of that is, to say the very least, ludicrous. Air Force One is a pretty paint-by-numbers 'Die Hard but it's the president' thriller. But to be fair to the movie, it does have some pretty decently tense moments/set pieces. It's not a great film but despite the ridiculous "end of history" '90s politics was a pretty entertaining watch.

Cleaner {2025, Daisy Ridley, Clive Owen) Abysmal. And I say that as someone who likes Daisy Ridley and the trend of badass action heroines ("Atomic Blonde", "Kate", and please don't gently caress up "Ballerina" ) I mean, just from the trailer, it looked like this could have been a lazy, but serviceable Die Hard rip-off to take your mind off of things for 90 minutes. It's not even that. It's lazy though, I'll give it that. If you've seen the trailer, you have seen basically all the action scenes. Ridley literally hangs outside of the building for half of the movie. The movie poster should straight up be regarded as false advertising. For the first 15 minutes after the introductory sequences you will ask yourself "where's the conflict here?" and you'll wonder why you should be rooting for Ridley's character in the first place. A "what if Hans Gruber was morally right", if you will. Let's just say in the current political and economic climate, the movie would probably even not be centered around that particular plot. Then Clive Owen fully and unironically pulls a Steven Seagal from "Executive Decision and you'll know why maybe Ridley's character should come out on top. It gets worse from there. The only cute bit was the callback to the showdown of Avengers: Endgame, which may not even have been intentional, despite the namedropping of Thanos and the Infinity Stones earlier in the movie. Edit: just realized it's directed by Martin Campbell. At least this one is better than "Dirty Angels" so I'll bump it up to a 2/5. mcbexx fucked around with this message at 21:52 on Apr 10, 2025 |

Copshop (2021) Alexis Louder carries it to being watchable, which is better than I expected. Not something that's going to stick with you but fine for turn-your-brain-off entertainment. Although I get the sense the people who made this movie thought they were making something deeper. 2.5/5.

Heaven's Gate (1980): B Not only is it not one of the worst movies ever made, but the critics who trashed it were wrong. Heaven's Gate doesn't deserve the hate it gets. That isn't to say that Heaven's Gate is a masterpiece. It's at least 20 minutes too long and has pacing problems. But the theme of immigrants being dumped on by big money is as relevant today as it was in 1890. F_Shit_Fitzgerald fucked around with this message at 02:57 on Apr 12, 2025 |

Warfare (2025) A story about a group of Navy Seals performing a mission during the Iraq War in 2006. Definitely a different kind of war movie, it seems almost like a documentary, taking place almost entirely in real time. Really different take on it, with the enemy only barely glimpsed and the wounded soldiers shown in excruciatingly intimate detail. I read a book back in High School called The Forever War, a sci-fi story written by a Vietnam War veteran. A part that has stuck with me to this day is when the protagonist, on shore leave, is asked by a civilian, "What's it like out there?" "Mostly boring," I said, automatically, "When you aren't bored, you're scared." This movie really encapsulates that, for better or worse. Mostly for better.

Ghost in the Shell (1995) Somehow had never seen this despite being a touchstone of anime and it was pretty good! Wicked cyberpunk action mystery with a dash of philosophy on the nature of life. Really pretty to look at too, but that's to be expected for the time. I was probably not as blown away by it as I would have been if I had seen it earlier in my weeb career, but it's a classic for a reason.

The Masque of the Red Death (1964). What a delightfully macabre old-fashioned motion picture this was. Full of amazing sets and void of the slightest hint of realism. Vincent Price is almost always on screen, and everyone else is studying from the master (I was especially pleased by the performance of Skip Martin as the jester). Chilling, dark, and tense, rather than "scary" as such - a horror movie strong enough for a maven, yet gentle enough for a weenie. My first specific and concrete thought about what makes it good to form while watching is that, if at all possible, somebody needs to show this movie to Koji Igarashi.

Check out Grand Theft Hamlet if you want to see a movie about planning to do Hamlet in GTA Online, created in GTA online. I think this is ultimately more compelling than watching them actually do the play, but that isn’t really there if that is what you are looking for. drat I should have gotten better than a B on my Bully Photography project in college, I was clearly ahead of my time.

Winnie The Pooh: Blood and Honey (2023): F There are layers to this dreck. I came into it expecting "le epic Reddit" movie, where a stupid internet meme is stretched out over a feature length movie. Blood and Honey is that to some degree, but it's more like a bizarro Hook - take beloved childhood characters and "update" them, but unlike Hook with good actors, an intriguing (if overlong) story and interesting things to say, don't include any of those things. Just have Pooh and Piglet kill generic 'hot horror women' in random, grisly ways for no discernible reason. On a basic level, too, Blood and Honey is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NYae3ZAAbLc The Movie. Disgusting, awful poo poo that's an insult to Milne and all the kids who grew up with the Pooh Bear story.

Just caught Sinners, and it's a good time. The first half takes its time setting up a textured and lived-in atmosphere with some intriguing subplots, a rich ensemble cast, and absolutely no throwaway characters. The second half then takes a turn into a frantic and consciously schlocky kind of horror that's very crowd-pleasing. It's long but it's paced well enough that you don't feel the length at all. Worth seeing in a large format such as RPX, mostly for the sound design. The score weaves together diegetic music and some anachronistic touches in a surreal and alluring way that really works because it's largely about the power of music to transport you to other places and times. Feels like there's a lot of subtext to chew on about the existential horror of assimilation and the loss of cultural identity, so it's ripe for think pieces. I was glad to see it with no prior knowledge of the story, because that's the ideal way to experience it if you can.
