My point is that he significantly over-promised, and the reading was far more interesting than the lectures given the fact that he was completely incapable of actually lecturing in an effective manner. Honestly, my biggest memory of the guy is being in a different class and having a fellow student ask me how Connelly's class was. "Well, it's really interesting stuff, but he's old as dirt," was my answer. The professor of the class we were in overheard and interjected with something like "Dirt is much older than 82." I doubt that's very funny in text, but in the moment it was hilarious, and the three of us laughed at the frail old man who should have stopped teaching a decade ago.
