Hmm these cool videos are possible because it’s on Vive and they can record the player and green screen them into cool backgrounds. I wonder how it will be on PSVR

I'll probably grab PSVR for my birthday later this year but man I just can't stop thinking about how cool something like what's in those videos would be without the headset. Maybe the tech will get there before I die...

Sure there is. The technology already works, they just need to make it smaller and cheaper, and people will use it. If not in ten years then fifteen, but VR will be widely adopted eventually.

I don't think the technology is the issue, more the fact it's something people wouldn't want to use. I don't think the market of people that want full immersion is all that large. Certainly wouldn't fit me, and I'm very much into gaming.

There's also the problem that most genres don't really work with VR. I'm convinced it's going to stay niche.

And the aggressive push for 3D movies in the theater now. Between that and all the usual stuff, they work hard to make sure I want to go to the theater as little as possible.

Without a virtual image that wraps around your head, 3D is meaningless to me.

Maybe the US is souring on 3D faster than Japan? At the newish theater in town, for a movie like the new Avengers, they’ll have like 20 3D imax shows a day, no non-3D imax shows, and then one or two normal shows a day.

If you go to IMAX and watch a movie you can't elect to not have it on 3d. It's meant to be "standard" but it's actually loving annoying when laser keeps action smooth and 3d (even laser 3d or whatever) makes it a blurry mess.

There isn't a theater with laser projection within 100 miles of me and I don't exactly live out in the middle of nowhere. 3d still seems very heavily pushed in theaters.

On VR chat, google and LG did a thing.

https://9to5google.com/2018/05/22/google-lg-vr-oled-display/

quote:

At Display Week 2018, Google is set to unveil the end result today. Created with LG Display, this 18MP OLED display has a 1443 PPI and a 120-Hz refresh rate. This 4.3-inch 4,800×3,840 prototype panel is the “world’s highest-resolution OLED-on-glass display.”
...
Given the high-bandwidth of the resolution and data involved, Google and LG fabricated a custom driver integrated circuit (IC). Another trick to power this display is foveated rendering. This technique renders only what the user is currently looking at in high-resolution while the periphery fades out around that view.

Google emphasized that they designed the display so that two — one for each eye — can be powered by a mobile SoC on a mobile headset. However, it might run at a lower refresh rate of 75-Hz.

So, VR has enough of a future as far as Google is going to be dumping money into display tech.

High PPI displays with FOV tech is going to change VR in a very big way.

It absolutely is because it allows them to charge practically double for a movie. The theater chain here will have like 3 or even 4 price points for huge stuff like Star Wars or comic book movies.

Good news! It doesn't matter that you can't do the cool green screen when you're playing the game!

I've been following Beat Saber for a while now and was really sad when they announced that it wasn't launching on PSVR. As far as I know they don't have a timetable for a release but it's listed as an early access game on steam so I assume it will be a while and also more expensive than the $20 it is right now.

Hopefully the custom tracks have cross compatibility between PC and PSVR versions though.

The business I manage houses a VR arcade in the same storefront, run by a different company. They have 2 HTC Vive 'Roomscale' stations where you are just playing normal Steam VR and then 2 Omniverse full-bore magnet shoes-and-treadmill fully immersive VR.

The omni's gather dust because no one hardly ever plays them. It's imposing and cumbersome. The roomscale poo poo blows people's minds if they aren't gamers with simple stuff like Richie's Plank or Google Earth. Real Gamers just come in and load up Serious Sam or Superhot and basically just play those.

VR gaming can really immerse you into some games in a way that I, as a career gamer since the age of 5, would not have thought possible. I was mega down on VR, I wear glasses and hate putting poo poo on my face or head, but Superhot VR is loving super amazingly fun and awesome and walking around inside of a video game is crazy when you gotta duck and move around.

until VR hits the Batman Beyond level it will always put peope off who would rather just hold the controller in their hand and sit on their couch.

That means you're hiding too long behind your shield and your guard is getting broken. Attack, parry or dodge more.

This happens when you block an attack that has a yellow warning flash. These will always break your guard so either dodge them entirely or parry them.

Across the board, VR manufacturers have reported slower growth than they had projected. There also used to be a lot more venture funding for software companies interested in making VR games. Many companies missed out on the mobile gaming boom so they compensated by giving blank checks to any developer who came to them with a VR idea.

There are 3 kinds of attack in the game:

-Plain animation: Bounces off your shield if blocked, no recovery frames. Can be parried.

-Yellow flash: Breaks your guard if blocked (this is what's happening here). Can be parried.

-Red flash: Cannot be blocked or parried, must be evaded.

4 is pretty normal. 6, can happen depending on theater

2d small format
3d small format
2d large format
3d large format
2d large format premium seats (some theaters)
3d large format premium seats (some theaters)

Then there's matinee and discount day pricing on top.

Yet, with all this, I don't have a Dolby Cinema nearby. So no laser projection, no HDR.

3d on my TV is actually better than the theater so I have real mixed feelings on it for home video. On one hand, I want the 4k HDR copy. On the other, the 3d presentation of my OLED is gobsmacking.

Speaking of where controls are going in the near future, I really hope gyro aiming becomes the norm sooner than later.

I was never a PC gamer, so I never really understood why mouse+KB people hated on stick aiming so much, then I tried stick + gyro aiming and holy poo poo. Stick aiming is no longer fun and feels like poo poo after experiencing that.

It's possible for developers to do it with the DS4 as far as I know, but it feels really late in the console's life cycle for a feature like that to catch on.

I grew up playing FPSes a lot on PC, so when they came to real prominence on consoles, I couldn't understand it. I guess they've come a ways with aim assists and recoil minimization and such, but it still just doesn't seem right compared to the precision that is had with a mouse.

The only shooter I was ever really able to get into on console was Splatoon, since it allows for that stick + gyro combination. I just use the stick at high sensitivity for large, sweeping camera movements, and gyro at a lower sensitivity for any sort of actual aiming.
