September 17 to October 9, 3427
______________________________________________________________________________________________________

September 17

The squadron is ordered to take up position near New Caroline to enforce the quarantine.

I decided to call the Colonel and ask about a suspicion that this virus may not be natural.

Okay, other sectors? Spoiler....I control over half the Empire.

Okay, why did the Colonel not issue a general advisory about this problem? You would think it was important to let the Captain in charge of your warfront know if your enemy is suspected to be using bioweapons.

Later in the day a trader was heading towards New Caroline and the fleet intercepted.

Nice to have a cooperative and competent merchant captain.

In the evening we picked up the satellites that can detect bioweapon carriers and deployed them.

If you do not inform the Colonel the plague event keeps repeating until you do. This gives you more time at Captain rank but this is generally not a good thing as the other empires are busy building up while you futz about.

September 18

In the morning ordered the construction of a spaceship factory on New Caroline. Was short the money needed to put down a weapon factory as well. The Achilles repairs are still nibbling away at income.

The satellites came online at San Sterling and Naxos giving improved detection.

Just off of Garthog 4 I spotted Virus Carriers. I had one trader enroute to New Caroline and decided to intercept it and then go bag the Virus carriers which were moving into Imperial space.

They agreed to withdraw and I ordered the squadron to attack the Garthog virus transports.

They appeared to be automated and unarmed and the fighters tore all three apart. The governor of New Caroline sent his personal thanks:

I saw a Trader enroute to New Caroline and was not sure if I would be able to get back in time to stop him but ordered a quick intercept.

September 19

I ordered a weapon factory and a new hospital on New Caroline.

The trader had made it to New Caroline and was leaving. I had to stop the ship before it could spread the plague.

Then the governor called to tell me the crisis was over. No need to intercept the enemy now. I ordered the squadron to Achilles to stay near the front and stay near a military spaceport.

September 20

Put down a new police brigade on New Caroline and upped their taxation to Very High. Waiting for the factories to come on-line.

September 21

Ordered a squadron of 5 new Avenger fighters and 5 new laser cannons. This is enough lasers to fit out my destroyer and cruiser.

In the evening another distress call came in.

Halloween party? What the hell?

I outfitted the old Excalibur with one new laser cannon that was finished and ordered the squadron to intercept.

Production is slow with one factory. They are halfway done with a single fighter.

September 22

With the new factories New Caroline is short on power so ordered a new fusion plant.

We found the Garthog fighter group attacking the merchant but after losing only two fighters the rest fled. The captain offered 1,500 credits for the assist.

September 23

Lasers finished, all ships are refitted. Except for the one ion gun missing on the cruiser the squadron is fully armed.

September 24

New Caroline becomes the first stadium in the area. Finally, Arcturian football can be played. Once I add one more police station I plan to try Demanding taxation and see what happens. Repairs finally finished on last building on Achilles.

September 25

I place another police brigade and an equipment factory on New Caroline and push their taxation to Demanding. The planet is pretty much where I want it at this point as long as population continues to slowly rise. If not, will lower taxation back down. Planet is finished for now. Going to hit Naxos, the other earth-type world next for fitting out.

September 26

I order a new destroyer. Three of my five fighters are finished and this will split capacity but need more warships. Once I kit out Naxos I will add some factories there to speed things along. It also is almost at the limit of its hospital facilities so Naxos gets a new hospital.

The Colonel came with one of his cheery calls.

Okay, another escort mission. I wait for the admiral to appear on scope and then will add all fighters to the fleet and move out.

The admiral seems to have been at Achilles. I load up 3 more fighters and follow the Admiral.

September 27

While escorting the Admiral I got a call from my wife:

My son is an idiot. Seriously, three year olds understand that toy trucks and planes are not the same as real ones. Better send a message to look into special programs.

September 28

I am guessing the Admiral is low on fuel? Still only halfway to New Caroline. And this is one of our flagships?

While growth is slow on New Caroline due to the taxation it is positive. I lay down a police brigade and stadium on Naxos and push taxation to Very High. I will put down another police brigade and then push to Demanding. Naxos is the most populated planet in the sector. It used to be New Caroline but the plague did a number on it. Once those are finished time to start laying down factories.

Just before noon the Garthogs make a play for Benson's ship:

Once you get enough ships you can choose formations at the beginning of a battle. I want the flagship and destroyers out front. The Garthogs have a flagship and two destroyers but their ships are all unshielded and they only have three fighters.

Benson fires his rockets (or rocket, not fully armed) at the flagship but he obviously does not have a good shield system and takes some Garthog rockets. The Excalibur is heavily damaged but most of the Garthog fighters are gone and one destroyer is about to blow. I am going to have the Excalibur run and finish off the destroyer and fighter and then throw everything at the flagship.

Benson is taking damage but the rest of the Garthog ships are gone and the Excalibur got away. My cruiser's shields are down but the hull is in pretty good shape. A few fighters have been lost as well. All ships are ordered to hit the Garthog flagship.

Enemy ship destroyed.

Lost 4 old Hammerhead fighters but only 1 new Avenger. The Admiral gave me five laser cannons to outfit the fleet. Good thing too. The Excalibur had all 6 of its lasers shot off the hull. I order production to build one more. Once the Admiral arrives I can head back to Achilles to rearm it.

September 29

Ordered another police brigade on Naxos and pushed taxation to Demanding. Not quite enough money to build a new spaceship factory.

September 30

Escort complete, the squadron is ordered back to Achilles. I build a spaceship factory and that will put power in the red so add a fusion plant as well. Going to hold off on other factories here. No huge demand for weapons and equipment at the moment. More important to get working on other planets.

Destroyer and other fighters were finished today and added them to the squadron. Destroyers come with three laser cannons and no shields. I luckily have the extra shield system I got back when I was a Lieutenant and outfitted the new destroyer which command inexplicably names "Excalibur". It is like they want command confusion. I ordered another new destroyer but that was all I could afford.

October 1

Ordered another new destroyer and six more fighters along with the equipment to kit out all my destroyers. Tomorrow will begin working on infrastructure on Achilles.

October 2

Put down a police station and hospital on Achilles. Just need a stadium to push to Demanding taxation.

In the afternoon the Colonel called again, this time about escorting an armed transport:

No wonder this war has lasted so long. No one actually does anything.

Hmmm....a flagship.

Money transport? In any case I grab another Avenger fighter and the destroyer Ivan is ready to go. Unfortunately its shield system is not finished yet. At 70% so it is going out without shields.

October 3

We rendevoused with the transport and waited.

This evening I left the bridge to take care of some work in my room.

On the way I saw a door closing. Someone was in my room.

When I got to my room nothing was missing but my terminal was active. Someone is spying on me or trying to dig through my files.

I went to the rec area and talked to Kelly, my chief engineer.

Did I just say: 'what's the haps?' I must be rattled by the intruder.

"Hey, good to see ya - nothing special. Everything's fine here as I can figure, except for the fact that we're stuck in a warzone."

Oh, I take it, you are not too keen on fighting?

"Yeah, course not, especially since there's nothing like uh, human about our enemies. The biggest problem is you can't predict their reactions; and you never know what they're thinking.

That doesn't make any sense! What are you talking about? Come on, talk to me!

"Well, you know, their ships are just so fast. None of our cruisers can touch them and their flight paths are almost incalculable. When we do get a lock on 'em, they move to fast that it doesn't make any difference."

Okay......we have had no problem shooting them down so far. And incalculable, their ships stop and turn whenever they turn just like ours. This guy seems a bit pessimistic.

"Every time I see it, it still surprises me. How can we defeat something that is so much more advanced technologically. We know so little about them....."

They have medium tanks and we do not but other then that I have seen nothing to convince me of their technological superiority......

Okay. Listen up Kelly, we went through the academy together, so I think I can trust you, can't I? I think there might be an alien spy on my ship. Have you seen any strangers on board, or anything?

"Heyhe! Aliens. Don't make me laugh. This ship isn't big enough to hide a rat let alone an alien spy you're get to be crazy just to ask! You know, paranoia's a side effect of Prosain Brandy."

Okay, one minute you are all doom and gloom about our inevitable defeat at the hands of an enemy you claim is beyond our comprehension but when I suggest an alien spy you treat me like the paranoid nutjob?

I haven't touched that stuff since college, but I could swear I saw someone running out of my room. I'm sure there has been someone spying on me.

"No, I can't believe there's an alien on this ship. If you're worried about spying, stay off the Pro-brandy and turn on your Room Recorder. You know, you can record room movements on your computer? All you gotta do is put it in the Rec. position. Then, err, leave the room and the computer will automatically record the movements of anyone who enters that room. Pretty simple isn't it?"

Thanks for the tip, Kelly.

While convinced Kelly is a little unstable I went to turn on the room recorder.

Okay, back to my escort mission.

October 4

Put down a stadium and spaceship factory on Achilles. Also needed a new nuclear power plant to keep things going as fusion plants are not allowed on desert worlds.

In the morning I returned to my room after a stint on the bridge to find the room recording worked.

Catherine Reinhart, the psychologist. She is going through my files.

I decided to report to the Colonel.

I found out I never told the Colonel I had taken out the virus carriers:

Pretty sure failing to send that doesn't matter.

Okaaay, so you are not removing her from the ship? Ummmm.....weird.

I decided if I was doing a good job I could ask for reinforcements.

He sent a destroyer and a few fighters.

He is not amused by my attempt to ask for even more.

The Garthogs make a play for the transport.

If I had know they were going to intercept so close I might have put guns on the planet. They could have joined the fight.

I engaged and the Garthogs concentrated on the transport.

It barely escaped intact. The early report that the ship was armed turned out to be a pack of lies.

We took out a single Garthog destroyer but lost nothing in the battle.

The super-slow money transport finally lands on San Sterling and I head back to Achilles. I ordered more lasers and another shield system for the destroyer the Colonel sent.

October 5

Put a stadium on San Sterling. Probably going to leave taxation at just Very High here as planet is running out of building room and need to save some for factories.

I can almost call this a fleet now.

October 6

Placed a new hospital and a spaceship factory on San Sterling. Going to call the planet done for now. On to Centronom. They also need a hospital and I give them one.

October 7

Centronom gets a spaceship factory and an equipment factory as shield construction is taking too long.

October 8

Add a weapon factory and police station on Centronom. The planet needs more power. Will add some tomorrow.

October 9

Add a police station and nuclear plant on Centronom. Income passed 50,000 a day for the first time. Putting a stadium down tomorrow and then I am done. Going to keep building ships and fighters and fill in the weapon and equipment factories I skipped on the other planets.

Looks like no rest for the weary:

Don't we defend these things? I guess they did say the Garthogs were technological scavengers.

Okay.

Uhhhh...that is a destroyer, not a cruiser. Perhaps it is so highly classified even the Colonel does not know what it is?

And the Garthog driving it.

I order the fleet to intercept.

Two Garthog flagships, two destroyers, five fighters, and the prototype, a tough fight especially as those flagships are going to chuck rockets at us.

This is where the game takes the gloves off a little. If you have not built anything this battle is probably unwinnable. I expect to lose a lot of fighters.

I order the fleet to charge and attack the prototype.

Rocket attacks savaged and destroyed my still-damaged destroyer and other rockets hit my fighters and wreaked havoc.

Once the destroyer was gone though the Garthogs gave up.

The Colonel called:

I met the Colonel on the Scorpion Base orbiting Earth.

As I mentioned before this game loves its long docking sequences.

Some trouble with this fighter I guess. Hard to tell but it is on fire and smoking.

Also loves walking down corridor shots.

I meet a few new officers, an expert of alien life, our chief diplomat, and a military advisor who gives me my next assignment. I am promoted to Commander immediately.

Pointing out the Garthogs have been a threat to the Empire for too long my instructions are to stop their encroachments and defeat them and win the war against them.

I am being given a Mammoth-class flagship to carry out this task. Finally my fleet can carry ground troops.

I am also being given permission to run research and development projects to improve our technology.

My fleet leaves the station to return to the border to fight and win this war.

This update went long but wanted to finish the rank. Did not have time to proofread so apologize for any errors. Will read over in morning.

Could be the devs confused the ranks of "Commander" and "Commodore" because they sound similar. A Commodore is one of the ranks above Captain and Commodores are actually expected to lead fleets.

Colonel isn't even a navy rank. :v:

But you could argue that way, since between Captain and Colonel there is the rank of Major. The problem is of course, Colonel is the last rank before ground armies start with the General-ranks, while Commodore is the last rank below all the Admirals. So it doesn't map exactly. I guess you could see Colonel as a Commodore-equivalent for the fleet if you look at it a certain way. If the devs thought like that, it makes sense to insert some other rank to prevent the main character suddenly being the same rank as their commander.

(Of course, I'm a) totally overthinking this, and b) the Colonel would still have seniority even if you're suddenly promoted to the same equivalent rank, so that would actually work out. :v: )

Too bad they didn't go with German naval ranks, there everything neatly maps to the corresponding ground ranks. Easy to understand even for non-soldiers.

That's interesting to hear, in my own nation's navy things are a lot more formalized. The "rank" of Commodore is an actual rank and called Flotillenadmiral (Flotilla Admiral). It's the first Admiral-rank.

A colonel is usually an army rank. A captain of a major navy ship is equivalent to a colonel in rank (O-6). A commodore is a navy captain in command of a flotilla or small fleet, the title is to indicate the superior position unequivocally but also that it's temporary (also I don't think you get paid any more).

Also way back in the day the USN used to call all captains of major naval vessels commodore much to the amusement of the Royal Navy.

I remember this game! I enjoyed it as a budget release after playing the hell out of Imperium Galactica 2. Although the developers were Hungarian it was originally a French release, I believe, which explains the bande dessinee/cyberpunk tone.

A lot of the wonky dialogue is bad translation. The copy I had was a really half-assed re-release and simply stopped bothering to translate the dialogue after the first half of the game. The rest was all in French. My childhood language skills took a noticeable step up from playing this game.

It did explain all the lovingly rendered landing and corridor shots though; in the French version they had a narrator speaking over them to fill in more of the plot.

October 9 to December 2, 3427
______________________________________________________________________________________________________

October 9

I surveyed my new bridge.

I now have the ability to call all the planets I control in the Empire and request a status update. As a practical matter this does not help much.

The planet Zeuson has been place under my authority.

Several new planets, some uncolonized, are now within my jurisdiction.

No, I can't colonize them. You have to research the colonization ship and that is not available at this rank. In the top left I also get a new speed control Previously I had normal speed and accelerated, now I have a much faster speed.

I have spotted the Ychoms up at Center 1.

Awwww......cute....

The Morgath are also in the area.

I believe one of the planets in the area is Morgath. Probably Exterior 1 down in the bottom left. If the planet has no name on the main map it is uncolonized. If it has grey lettering it is colonized btut we are not sure by whom. We can send a satellite to ID it. Satellites stay until they are shot down which does happen. Eventually we can build better satellites that are harder to shoot down. I currently have one satellite in inventory.

The Garthogs possess four planets and one probable planet. We need to survey Garthog 5 to identify it before we can attack.

I go over production and find that I have been authorized to create orbital space bases but they are too expensive. I can also build new flagships but that will require an orbital shipyard which I do have to research.

I gain control of the planet Zeuson.

Okay, this makes my other planets look like metropoli.

I now have control of research.

One of my first priorities are to get a solar plant, a good power production facility. Almost as good as a fusion plant but has the advantage of being available on planets that cannot use fusion. The top row shows the five available research facilities. The bottom row shows what is currently built. Each planet can only hold one research facility.

I found this mechanic very well-designed. It keeps you from turtling up and researching everything. To get higher end research you are required to take more planets so you can have more facilities.

To research this plant I need two civil defense facilities and a mechanical research facility in addition to the three facilities I have now.

October 10

I put Civil research facilities on Naxos and San Sterling.

October 11

I put the Mechanics research facility I need on Zeuson. All planets now have research facilities. I may have to demolish and replace them to get other tech.

My wife called in the evening:

Friends? Is this a backhanded way of claiming she is having an affair and blowing me off? I should probably go visit soon. Johnny has enough problems without needing a divorce to further mess him up.

October 12

Naxos is low on food so I built them some more hydroponic farms. Zeuson is shrinking due to lack of living space so I put in an arcology and some morale buildings. Waiting for development centers to finish before starting on research.

October 13

Started on researching solar plants.

The percentage timer climbs up and money slowly drains out as research is done.

I also put down more morale structures on Zeuson. Got to get them to demanding taxation soon.

October 14

More morale buildings on Zeuson. They are running a power shortage but want to wait for solar plants. I could put in more nuclear plants but probably more efficient to wait and rocky planets can't use fusion power.

October 15

Research completed. I put down a pair of solar plants on Zeuson and demolish their nuclear plant. I also demolish two dev centers and put up two more so I can research the Phood factory which lets me produce food at a higher rate then a hydroponic farm.

October 16

Still waiting for power to come back on Zeuson to start research.

The Colonel called:

This message is misleading. Blockading is annoying. Trade ships leaving Zeuson will turn back if ordered but will then immediately take off again and try to leave. Instead you just wait for the governor's ship.

I finally get that rat-hole of a planet built up and the governor starts rebelling? Bastard.

I order the fleet to take up position near Zeuson.

On the way I had more dreams:

Back in that strange room that fills me with fear.

October 17

Built more morale buildings and continued to develop Zeuson. Almost finished. Then back to Centronom. Started research on Phood factory.

October 18

Began work on factory construction. All planets must have one of each factory type to speed production.

October 19

The governor took off.

Oddly the fleet is designated as belonging to the Alliance of Free Traders.

I tried to order him off.

I have no idea why the governor claims to be from Naxos when they are clearly on Zeuson. The ships are also Alliance of Free Traders tech.

The fleet mauled his destroyer and he begged for us to stop firing. We did and he returned to the planet.

October 20

The prison ship arrived.

I guess the Colonel is getting confused by my whirlwind of promotions.

This is a reused congratulations message from the previous rank. I believe this is the last of the scripted missions. While events continue to happen in the background there are no more specific missions. This confused me as a kid as I sat around waiting for something to happen. Now need to get research and production chugging along to finish off the Garthogs.

October 27

Finished research of Phood factory and retooled the colonies to use them. Now to begin work on medium tank technology. Rebuilding a few dev centers to meet requirements.

Garthog ground attack fleet enroute to Zeuson. I order the construction of ground to space ion projectors to try to hold them off. Not sure if they will finish on time.

Garthogs switch targets and are now enroute to Naxos. I build up the tank garrison to maximum. I have time to start work on researching medium tanks.

I focus my defense around one of the fusion plants.

Their heavy and medium tank decimate my light tanks but we destroy them and turn on the rocket cars as they destroy the fusion plant.

The last light tank falls and the Garthogs take the planet.

I load my flagship with five light tanks and return.

Only a single unarmed Garthog jammer car is present and it is quickly destroyed. A new fusion plant is ordered and the remaining one needs repairs. Morale is understandably low but should recover soon.

October 30

I begin installing ion projector guns on the border planets. Naxos and Achilles now have guns. Medium tank research is complete.

November 1

I put in an order for 8 medium tanks. I start research on cargo pods. This equipment will let flagships carry extra vehicles.

November 3

A Garthog fleet is detected heading for San Sterling. Looks like they are avoiding planets with space guns. I order all of the new medium tanks deployed to San Sterling and order more. I also add space defenses on Centronom. Will add on New Caroline and San Sterling ASAP.

Research is completed on the cargo pod as the fleet closes on San Sterling. I start research on orbital factories. Once this is completed I can build a pair of new flagships (3 is the maximum in a single fleet) and when each has a cargo pod I can carry 24 medium tanks into battle which should be enough to take out any Garthog world.

The Garthogs landed and targeted the fusion plant.

The plant is destroyed but the Garthogs are losing troops.

The last of the Garthogs try to make a stand.

A great victory but San Sterling is now out of power.

November 4

We begin reconstruction on San Sterling but the planet is going to weaken until the fusion plant is back online. Another fusion plant is added along with some ion projectors. Another Garthog fleet moves in on Zeuson but then switches targets to Naxos. The guns are primed and ready.

November 5

The Garthogs hit Naxos.

Bombs from the Garthog flagship knock out one projector but the other four wipe out all their fighters and a destroyer. The rest of the Garthog fleet flees.

I rebuild the destroyed gun. The rest of the guns need repairs.

Okay, not sure what is up with the damage mechanic. The guns were clearly only lightly damaged in the fight but they have at least 90% damage? A lot of other buildings took light damage but it should take no more then a few hours to fix.

November 6

Research completed on the new orbital factory. Going to build one as soon as I finish putting up guns on all planets. Rearrange development buildings to focus on pulse lasers. These lasers are about double the strength of the lasers my ships are currently equipped with.

November 7

I order the final orbital defense guns on New Caroline. All planets now have an array of five guns each.

November 8

Start on pulse laser research.

November 9

Start on an orbital production facility and three cargo pods.

Pulse laser research is completed. I start on ion gun technology.

November 10

Orbital factory completed and placed on the planet Zeuson to keep it far from the Garthogs.

Also order another flagship. Will add a third as soon as finances allow.

November 11

Garthog fleet spotted enroute to San Sterling.

Larger fleet this time. One gun is destroyed by bombs. We focus fire on the flagship and take one out.

The second flagship is destroyed but another gun is lost.

Only a single destroyer flees. The fleet at Achilles intercepts and destroys the fleeing destroyer before it can get home.

November 12

Second flagship is ordered. Research on ion guns completed. Only three things left available to research without acquiring more planets. Destroyer 2, Cruiser 1, and Hyperdrive 2.0. I start on Cruiser 1.

I also order ion guns and pulse lasers needed to fully refit the current fleet with guns and replace all lasers with pulse lasers.

November 14

I start a production run of medium tanks.

November 15

I start research on hyperdrive 2.0

November 16

I order over 40 fighters to fill out the fleet.

November 17

Hyperdrive research complete, starting on Destroyer 2 technology.

November 18

Guess I was wrong about missions being over

The Colonel called:

I believe this is a destroyer 2 prototype. I go ahead and add some 3 cruisers to the production queue.

We arrive and establish escort.

And again the Garthogs seek to interfere. Luckily we outgun them.

The destroyer prototype takes some damage and has to pull back but the Garthog fleet is completely eliminated.

Fighter casualties were high.

November 22

Escort still ongoing. They lied about going to Centronom. A Garthog fleet is detected enroute to Achilles.

A pair of flagships and a pair of fighters attack.

A single flagship escapes and despite heavy damage all five projectors survive.

November 25

A flagship and destroyer attack Achilles and are destroyed.

I lay down a large order of Destroyer 2s. These things can hold 14 pulse lasers which, in my opinion, makes them better then Cruiser 1s.

November 28

Order a full array of 28 new hyperdrives for my new ships.

November 30

While the ships are not finished I am only short 7 destroyer 2 ships. Not all of the destroyer 2s are fully loaded with pulse lasers but all have at least some. The hyperdrives are also still being built and since fleets move at the speed of the slowest ship it is unnecessary to attach them now. I do have a full load of 24 medium tanks.

I order an attack on Garthog 4. It seems to be one of the most prominent places they strike from so perhaps it is loaded with their production facilities.

A tough fight.....

The three fighters do not worry me but they have two orbital bases which are usually tough and four defense guns along with a planetary shield. Going to target the bases with rockets and shield with bombs. If I can knock out the shield it will be easier to take out the guns.

The bombs wipe out the shield and a gun and we close in. Damage is moderate but no flagships are seriously hurt.

We land and are ambushed.

Their rocket cars are tearing me apart.

The invasion force is repulsed. We return to Achilles to rearm and try again.

December 2

This time when we arrive only two fighters stand against the fleet and are easily wiped out:

The Empire is short on medium tanks so half the complement in this attack is light tanks.

In the general melee we gain a slight advantage and wipe out their tank force but have only six tanks left.

They have a fortress and I do not have enough tanks left to take it out.

The tanks cross the colony taking out six nuclear power plants and cutting off power to the fortress. Without power only half of its guns will fire. Now we have a chance.

It is close as tanks are shot down by the fortress guns and each loss means damage on the fortress creeps up even more slowly.

The last lone light tank finishes off the fortress and the planet falls.

For the first time since the war with the Garthogs began the Empire has taken a Garthog world. And not just any world. Based on the buildings present this looks to be a key production planet.

There is a ways to go. It will take time to rebuild the Imperial ground forces and repair and refit the fleet but the Garthogs are reeling.

Fuck you say?!

Also now the Garthog world has no power. And they're probably pretty cross at you taking such a major world.

I find it deeply depressing that although the Garthogs are extremely efficient at producing synthetic food in limited space, they lack any form of recreation or trading ports. Their worlds are all just blunt functionality. It's... well, depressing.

I have to say, when I first played this I found it amazing that the ai will actually divert their fleets if you suddenly reinforce their target colony. Come to think of it, I can't think of any other game that lets the ai do that.

December 2

I realized I had some more research I had missed and start work on spy satellites.

Now for Garthog 4:

As you can see your building options are much more limited on Garthog worlds. Only a few buildings are available and very few morale buildings. It is very difficult to keep alien worlds growing at any tax level above low. This may be a balance mechanism to prevent runaway money growth in the end game. If you are an optimization nut the best thing to do is wait until you build colony ships and tax the planet highly until it becomes uninhabited and then recolonize. It does not actually help much. The bottleneck going forward is going to be production levels based on the number of factories and rarely that I need more money. One other thing you may notice is that the colony has two development centres. Aliens are allowed to cheat in this way though it is rare if I remember correctly. If I were to knock one down I could not replace it with another. I will leave the two I have here.

The planet needs power. I rebuild nuclear plants and put down some police stations. The planet already has all three factory types. Now just need to wait for the power plants to come on line so I can start using them.

December 3

Garthog 4 has power. Completed work on spy satellites. Starting work on researching rocket sleds.

I run a quick survey of all planets and strip them of tanks. I put together a fleet of 20 light tanks and 4 medium tanks. Going to try to take another world.

I also deploy a satellite at Center 16, a planet just north of Achilles. Turns out you need spy satellites for Garthog worlds so will need one before I can invade Garthog 5.

The Garthogs still have nothing but hate and the population is falling so I lower taxation to very low.

I order an invasion of Garthog 1.

December 4

The defenses are wiped out using the flagship's bombs.

The battle is hard-fought but only a pair of light tanks survive the battle with the Garthogs numerous heavy and medium tanks and they die attacking the planet's fortress.

The destroyers finish construction. Now have a full supporting battle group of 25 ships. Four old destroyers, three cruisers, and 18 advanced destroyers. Still short on pulse lasers though and ordered fighters to bring the fleet back to full strength. Going to attack Garthog 1 with every tank I have left.

A single fighter kamikazes into a destroyer but no real defenses are in place.

A pair of light tanks attack and are destroyed. Nuclear plants surround the fortress so cutting power is not a viable strategy.

The brazen assault strategy works but we lose a pair of medium tanks to the fortress guns. No more invasions for a while. Have to rebuild the army.

Garthog 1 does not have a colony hub so I order one so I can put down more buildings.

Not sure if it just did not have one or if it was destroyed in the bombardment.

December 6

With the colony hub built I put down the factories the planet does not have along with a civil engineering development centre.

The rocket sled research is finished.

December 7

With the new development centre I decide to develop plasma projectors, an improved ground to space gun. I have held off putting cannons on the newly taken Garthog worlds to get these first.

December 10

New ground to space cannons developed. I place them on the newly conquered Garthog worlds and tear down the old guns on Achilles and replace those. Now I need more money to upgrade the rest.

December 11

I start researching the inversion shield, a planetary shield that protects anti-space cannons.

December 14

Shields developed. Starting work on improved colony radar.

December 15

Garthog fleet detected enroute to Achilles.

The shield was not finished and Garthog bombs took out one plasma projector. A minor skirmish.

December 16

New hyperdrives are installed on all warships and we move to intercept the fleeing Garthog invasion fleet.

A single old destroyer is lost but we wipe out both flagships.

They are probably going to wish they still had those 20 vehicles when the invasion starts up again.

December 17

Realized I did not actually turn on the colony radar research. Starting now.

December 18

Last cannons and shields installed on Zeuson.

December 19

Research on radar finished. Replacing all radar telescopes with new

Temporarily down to only having radar coverage from the virus satellites I got back when I was a captain and the fleet's limited array.

Researching improved shipboard radar. After that I can research an advanced fighter and that is it.

December 20

The Empire with improved coverage.

December 22

Research on new ship-based array finished. Ordering 3, one for each flagship. Once I install these I move to wipe out the Garthog Empire. Starting on new fighter technology.

The fleet is loaded with tanks and ordered to attack Garthog 3.

December 23

The Garthog Fleet is spotted that has been bouncing between their planets is spotted. Going to intercept it in deep space where it will not get ground support fire.

December 24

The Garthog fleet is too fast (much faster then their invasion fleets and avoids our fleet. We continue to Garthog 3 and attack and destroy a few fighters and a trio of old Ion Projectors.

Two medium tanks are lost but the planet falls.

December 25

I attempt to intercept the last of the Garthog fleet while between the two remaining Garthog planets.

I intercept too close to Garthog 2.

Victory is achieved with only minor losses. Going to go back to Garthog 4 to get tanks and take Garthog 2 before they can rebuild.

Fighter 3 research is completed. A fine Christmas gift. I start a production run. The Garthogs should be defeated around the time the new year rolls in.

The attack on Garthog 2 meets a hastily arrayed force of enemy fighters and brushes them aside.

The planet had two fortresses but was not enough to stop our invasion. I return to Garthog 4 to refit for the attack on Garthog 5.

I choose to wait a while to rebuild my funds to rebuild the captured Garthog world.

December 27

Another dream....back in that strange room.....but something is being tested.

I went to the common area to relax and met with my head tech, Brian:

"I graduated at the top of my class and after designing the Hunter 2.0 I accepted my position here."

Seems you ability is only exceeded by your modesty. Did you also design the Avenger?

"Uhh, no. I can't take credit for that project I'm afraid. It takes thousand of people. I worked on the cooling system for the quad-engines. Separate teams are responsible for each part of the project. It happened to be that I was on the Mechanics team. There were other teams too, live Civil Engineering and Artificial Intelligence for example."

How exactly do they do the research?

"On a colony, the development centers get special treatment. They get the best equipment and resources. All the centers from the various colonies are joined together by a direct link. When we worked on the Avenger, we linked three development centers, three for engineering, and one military development center. These centers are such a drain on a colony, that you can't get more than one per planet. Designing a fighter like the Avenger is a royal pain. And there's too many obstacles. Nobody gets any sleep until the plane takes its maiden voyage off the runway. It takes a toll on everybody."

Wait, it took three development centers and then he lists four. The guy designing our tech can't count? That explains why the war was going so poorly for so long.

Mmm.....why did you leave development? It sounds like you really liked your work.

"Huh, huh, huh. You know, I'm getting too old for these all-nighters. And I have a neverending series of deadlines followed by more revisions with new deadlines. It's always the development that gets the blame. I had problems with my boss too, that was the last straw. And while I'm making less money, the atmosphere is a lot calmer and I can finally catch some z's, and I have a lot better dreams too. Isn't that what life's all about?"

Development schedules are worse then being on a ship that gets shot at?

What do you know about robotics?

"I know they were conducting research into robots a long time ago. There was some sort of accident with a prototype that went berzerk and killed eight technicians. As if we didn't have enough problems with the war against the aliens, without the military creating robots that killed humans. The research ended there and no more questions were asked. Rumor has it that some of the technicians still work for the government on more secret projects."

Well, thanks for the info Brian. Take it easy.

January 1

I add 30 of the hot new fighters to the fleet and reload on tanks.

A spy satellite is sent to Garthog 5

Cannot attack without identifying the planet.

The fighters are quickly swept aside.

All but one gun are destroyed with long range bomb attacks and that one is finished off by our destroyers.

Have not seen those damnable rocket tanks in a while but there are not enough of them and the enemy vehicles are beaten. The fortress is then destroyed and we hunt down a jammer car and radar car to take the planet.

The Garthog Nation is now an occupied protectorate of the Empire.

I was summoned back to Scorpion station orbiting Earth.

Game still loves its docking sequences.

And walking down corridor sequences.

The briefing focused on the growing alien nations surrounding us.

They are more advanced then we are. We desperately need to achieve some kind of parity to prevent possible invasion.

I was assigned the flagship Thorin, a leftover from the old Empire and three times larger than any of our other flagships. It is unique.

To complete this task you are being promoted to Admiral. Congratulations, sir.

Well, at least we know in this weird military structure that Colonel seems to outrank Commander but not Admiral.

I left to board the Thorin.

Admiral is the first (and only) rank that you gain that does not give you additional screens. Captain gave production and Commander gave Research. It does unlock new production and new research. It also opens up the rest of the map. The game opens up more and we have options as to who we want to attack and fight. Income is now well over 100k a day and will further shoot up with the new planets joining though they will need a lot of development.

Fun fact, you can entirely accidentally skip the admiral rank. This leads to being very underprepared for what's coming. Unless you exploit AI bugs (or actual game bugs that let you get a copy of fleet loadouts or effectively infinite tanks :v:).
