Austerity makes extremely valuable but inaccessable government resources too expensive to maintain, thus forcing the government to shut them down or pawn them off at firesale prices to corporate entities which can then make money off of providing the same service. And if memory still serves the increased instability also lets them hoard more wealth relative to everyone else--i.e. even though society is now poorer for their actions they are are (relatively speaking) richer. Also, as mentioned already DeVos is a Dominionist, which means she has a nice rationalization in place for why tearing apart the system and ruining lives makes her good--allowing for creating Religious Schools and thus spreading "Godliness." A lot of these shits also believe in the Rapture so they hope to escape death by forcing it to happen, because surely God won't have a problem with this level of absolute selfishness.
